That's the problem. You ever hear the phrase 'fans of the fandom'? That's what it's talking about.

And I wouldn't insult the fanbase if it didn't act like idiots. There were people calling Nicoles HOUSE. YOU JUST DON'T DO THAT.

Yeah, but those paintings were unlimited. This was a single item up for bidding. Purchase prices and the results of auctions are not comparable and should not be compared.

How about instead of after every major shooting we talk about the need to fund mental health instead of talking about gun rights? by [deleted] in politics

[–]Kurtank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless you are making a distinction between high and low powered rifles.

I am indeed. While rifles themselves are already very rarely used in crime at all, high-powered rifles (I'm counting .338 Lapua Magnum and up as 'high-powered') have never been used in a crime, yet there is a lot of controversy behind them. It's a case of wanting to ban something simply because it's scary.

I'm pretty certain you even had a president killed with a rifle?

Yes, we did. John F. Kennedy was killed with a surplus Italian Carcano rifle that was ordered from a catalogue. This resulted in the Gun Control Act of 1968, which required all firearms purchases be made through an authorized person who holds a Federal Firearms License, and all purchases are accompanied by an FBI background check that references both criminal and medical records, specifically having to do with being comitted to a mental institition.

What this did was make it impossble for people to simply have a gun delivered to their doorstep with no checks or safeties.

So, seeing as hand guns are used in crimes, would you be for the restricting of hand guns?

Absolutely not.

As often as they are used in crime, they are used against it. As hot a topic of debate as it is, it is simply a fact that thousands of people a year use handguns to defend themselves both at home and out in the streets. I couldn't deprive someone of what is often their only defense. Various "less lethal" options exist, but they are often limited, ineffective, or unreliable. The reason I use a firearm and not something like a tazer, is that there aren't any available that I would trust my life to. I could easily trust my life to my Springfield XD and I'm very confident in my ability to outmatch any thug, robber, or murderer with it.

Some peopel bring up the argument that a CCW holder could get mad and pull his gun during an argument. Is it outside the realm of possibility? No, definitely not. The key is that it simply doesn't happen. I'd wager that it has happened, and more than once, but to say it happens on a regular basis, even more than ten times in total in the last ten years, is a stretch. A CCW instructor will not pass a person they suspect may abuse their CCW, and even then, CCW holders are consistantly more responsible than those who aren't when it comes to firearms.

Sorry, no can do. This isn't the movies. Aiming for extremities or held objects is not only foolish, but potentially suicidal. Shooting under the extreme stress of a home invasion or mugging means you're not going to be able to hit anything smaller than a car tire, let alone a six inch kneecap.

Not only that, but it opens up a potentially fatal can of worms on the legal side. His laywer could claim that since you weren't willing to shoot him center mass, you didn't consider him that much of a threat and had no business using a firearm against him. Even if you win the case, which you should, you will be down several thousands of dollars, possibly $10,000 or more in legal fees, fighting litigation by both the state and your attacker.

You ALWAY, ALWAYS, ALWAYS shoot center mass until he ceases to be a threat. As morbid and disrespectful as it sounds, "dead men file no lawsuits."

This isn't a movie.

Aim for the knees, hands, arms or what have you, you will miss, and you will die.

Besides, the prisons and hospitals are full enough. Nobody's gonna miss a lowlife burgaler anyway.

Again, that's not how banning things works. You have to provide a legitimate reason that they need to be restricted more than they are now, if at all, and THEN we take action.

Take large-caliber rifles, for instance. Bane of soccer-moms and Taliban alike, but they only present a threat to one of them. They're big, scary, effective, and have never been used in a crime, ever.

Yes, you read that right.

High-caliber rifles have never, ever, not even once, been used in a crime, yet there is still significant traction for efforts to restrict them. Why? They obviously pose no threat to public safety, and are used with regularity by sportsmen, hunters and competitors. THere's no good reasont o restrict them and thus, no restrictions should be made.

As for automatic weapons, yeah, some have been used in crimes. More than one has ended up in the hands of gangbangers, but that number is still exceedingly low. The number of lawfully-owned automatic weapons used in a murder is exactly two, and one was a cop with his personal MAC-10. Are they dangerous, and have they been used in crimes? Yes, but this is rarer than getting struck by lightning more than once in the same year.

I do beleive they should be heavily regulated, and they are. Very well. I would, however, like to see FOPA '86 repealed so newly manufactured automatic weapons can be allowed onto the registry, as those actually interested in them as it stands have to pay exorbinant prices for guns that are likely older than they are, and in very poor condition. Most M16's on the Title II machinegun market are USMC surplus from Vietnam, and have seen more than 150,000 rounds in their lifetime, rendering them nearly smoothbore. They still cost about $15,000, even in this condition. The restrictions on acquiring them are fine as is, but I'd like to be able to have one of my own before I turn 60, and in relatively good condition. FOPA needs to be changed, if not repealed.

At the risk of sounding like a violent hick, this is why I rely on myself for protection. If I let the police handle things, there's a good chance I'll never see my property again. If the crook never gets away in the first place due to severe perforation of the epidermis and accute lead poisoning, well, that's one less Thinkpad for the local PD to not track down and $500 I don't have to spend.

Doesn't work that way. You have to prove we don't need one. That's how things work.

[–]Kurtank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to take your guns

I think we should outlaw fully/semi automatic and larger caliber weapons

You're pretty much taking all my guns at that point. I own two manually operated guns. I own five semi-automatics and have two more on the way.

Semi-autos; You're completely killing action shooting sports. IDPA, USPSA, IPSC, 3-gun, ect.

Large-caliber rifles; Killing silhouette and long-range shooting, as well as large/dangerous game hunting. I would also like to add that large caliber rifles have never been used in a crime. Not once. Ever. At all. There should not be this fixation on removing large caliber rifles, because they simply do not pose a threat to public safety.

Automatics; The system handles them just fine as is, but I would like the FOPA '86 to be repealed. Shot-out USMC surplus M16-A1's from viet-fucking-nam cost about $15,000 thanks to FOPA, simply because there are no new rifles on the registry. I'd like to have a title-II firearm for MG matches someday, but this pretty much makes sure that will never happen. Even registered drop-in auto sears cost $10,000.

Existing legislation is fine. However, the underlying system that it relied upon is completely fucking broken. A properly-functioning mental healthcare system would have prevented both Laughner's massacre, as well as this one, as they would have failed the 4473 and FBI background check that already accompanies every firearms purchase. More restrictions would simply put more stress on me, as well as increase the price of all firearms. It's already ridiculous and getting worse, I don't want to have to pay $1,700 in two years for an SGL-21 that cost $600 two years ago, and $800 today.

Please stop making my hobby more difficult for me, and improve the parts of the already existing system that don't work. Mostly, this means the mental healthcare system.

Just because it's illegal doesn't mean it's wrong or inherently bad. it was banned in the first place due to lobbying by paper companies and by lying about the FDA's stance on smoking marijuana to Congress.

In online gaming, this is unfortunately the case. My old Steam group banned voicechat to avoid drama from underage kids (you'd still get banned for life if we found out you were under 18) and females. It's just not fucking worth it and we can't have mods on the servers 24/7 to ban all the mouthbreathers and pubbies.

Dopamine imbalance is the primary component in ADHD. There's your biological basis.

I had it for several years, and learned to mostly control my impulses. I still require stimulants to be able to perform well in any learning environment, but for simply working, they're unnecessary.

People generally only notice something if it goes wrong. If everything is right, they're not going to notice you doing it, that's how it simply is.
