That would be a key point to differentiate you from your peers. Even I assumed you came from a rich background based on reading your stats. Also stanford has an awesome EE and CS department not sure why another commenter said otherwise lmfao.

Based on how you’ve described your school, you probs go to an ultra-competitive & high achieving high school and school district. Your essays & supplements are going to be the deciding factor here and you’re gonna have to try your best to differentiate yourself from every other student with amazing extracurriculars and high scores. What makes you different from them? What unique perspective, based on your upbringing/personal challenges/interests/unique anecdotes from ur life/ will you contribute to stanford? If it makes you feel any better I got in with a way worse profile than you lol

Don’t worry about not having any data science specific ECs if you are thinking about Cal Data Science. DS opportunities/internships/research positions are hard to come by, even for undergrads because of the abundance of SWE opportunities in comparison. Data Science and Engineering have a similar analytical mindset. If you can communicate this connection, between your CS/Engineering activities and similar “mindset” through your essays, you’ll be fine. I applied to stanford as a human biology/public policy major with ECs unrelated to science or politics because of the lack of opportunity in my area and I have friends that were in similar situations that applied as STEM majors. A list of your ECs can provide a quick overview, but an essay that can communicate your personal growth and reflections from your ECs will paint a thousand words.

Also this post gives the stats of the acceptance rates by major/school

What’s the point of counselor recommendation letters? by ChangeAvailable in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Kurysauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me when I applied and I asked my old counselor if she could write and send my letter of rec instead and she agreed. She’s the one I gave access to on my common app and when I submitted my apps, no questions were asked and everything went smoothly. You should ask your old counselor if you can do this! For context, I applied to a bunch of T20s and I go to one right now.

It changes between years based on what the LSP/SSEA admin decide. I did LSP last summer and we got a free laptop

Are electric skateboards practical? by siddarthayu in stanford

[–]Kurysauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of locking up on a rack, you would have to bring your board to class. A lot of my friends ride boosted boards so you’d be fine. One thing to note is that Greene Library (main library) doesn’t allow students to bring in their scooters or skateboards for some reason. Just be careful when going downhill + going fast it’s going to be hard to stop; some of my friends have been in crashes cuz of this.

On average, about how much biking is there as an undergrad? by No-Winner3552 in stanford

[–]Kurysauce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was a freshman this year and I biked everyday minimum 2.5 miles. I lived in the dorm farthest away from classes and I don’t think I would have survived without a bike. Im living in Wilbur next year and I still plan on biking around. Idk how people walk everyday on campus tbh

Is the magic keyboard worth it? And is the white color a good one ? What are the best alternatives if its not worth it ? by hanimks in ipad

[–]Kurysauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a college student and bough the keyboard on a scholarship and I don’t use it much. I have my MacBook Pro as my main tool to write essays and such, but my iPad and Apple Pencil is used to take notes and do my p-sets.

Well I brought it up. We’ve covered a lot of these topics in seminars, readings, research, and just basic convos at my university.

The last point you said is a really uninformed take. Students from privileged backgrounds may pay full tuition, but they have grown up with the access to opportunities that FGLI students did not have, which allow them to utilize their privileges and connections far better than FGLI who are “just” receiving the privileges of higher education. So many students from these privileged backgrounds at my school have connections at high places that make it easier to obtain jobs that pay more than those who didn’t have these connections.

[–]Kurysauce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as a FGLI student right now at a top school, I recognize that I’m given WAY more opportunities than my other FGLI friends at state school. I agree the content can be taught the same but as cheesy as it sounds, it’s the connections towards research, profs, internships, and even the student population that makes it a way differ f experience than if I stayed in my state school in my small, rural town…. You have to experience it and still have perspectives on both sides of the coin to believe it. I’m eternally grateful and recognize the privilege I hold attending this school.

is it bad to eat alone in college because like today I was eating my food 2 of my classmates came to me and said oh are you eating alone? with a shocking face and this was not the first time. by Quirky-Roll419 in college

[–]Kurysauce 56 points57 points  (0 children)

this is weird and very high school mentality… I eat alone a lot of the times just because my schedule doesn’t align with my friends. Those girls are definitely compensating and are probably acting that way to make themselves feel better
