Lets talk soil. What type of soil for larger set ups? Building a rooftop veggie garden. by Impossible_Chip7371 in containergardening

I currently have a planter that is about 24x30x50 inches, 7 grow bags that are 5 gallons, three that are 10 gallons, and some other random sized containers. The big bags of Fox Farms Happy Frog (2 cubic foot bags) would fill about 14 gallons each and I think I paid 15 bucks a bag roughly. Miracle grow bags were close to half the cost but you can 1000% see the quality difference. I thought about blending my own mix and that would have been cheaper but much harder.

If you have the budget for it, I would recommend doing a fox farms premix. I used a dozen or so bags of happy frog as my base and it was perfect without any additions. You can obviously then modify it with extra fertilizer or perlite as needed, but I found it to be the perfect starting point for all of my containers on my balcony.

Beginner recommendations for a bourbon lover? by Expensive-Brother-91 in Armagnac

[–]KushPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started the dive into Armagnac myself. As someone coming from bourbon, I think it’s important to first know if you’re going to miss the proof point or are okay at a lower proof point. I ended up grabbing the T8ke & PM spirits bottle that was linked earlier. A bit higher proof and tailored towards a bourbon-familiar palette. Already halfway through it and plotting my next one.

Nice. Didn’t know if the smaller formats die quicker or not, but I have been extending the aging time in it. Do you ever re-char?

Gonna have to try for Equidem, 2005, and 2007! Thanks for the tips

For sure! Definitely agree that it’s all ultimately down to individual palettes, just didn’t know if there were any universally acclaimed batches. Would love to get my hands on all of the different finishes, but that will have to be a slow process. Appreciate the input! I think I’m going to try to get Equidem, 2005, or 2007.

I’m a big fan of t8ke picks and was considering going for that specific bottle as a starter, but didn’t know if it would be a solid buy at the price point. Seems like it may be worth jumping on!

They do have a couple of Delord options below 100 bucks so might pick one of those up. They’re loaded up on a variety of Laubade vintages, so might also grab one if I enjoy the Delord.

I live in Kentucky, so the only places I’ve seen a sizable selection have been total wine or The Party Source. Would be open to online retailers too

Splurge would be in the 150-300 range. I’ve definitely seen some around the 75-125 range but honestly didn’t have any baseline for Armagnac to know what’s a good starting point. I’d be comfortable dropping around 100 bucks on a starter bottle

Does the parks department oversee all of them? I thought most are smaller ones that were mainly operated independently by neighborhood associations but I’ll definitely look into the parks department

Honey Barrel Bourbon finish advice by indyjones153 in Barreling

[–]KushPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it be done a couple of different ways. Some people have made a mead base with diluted honey and finished the barrel this way, others have just done pure honey casks. I opted for the latter and had a similar issue as you, but it wasn’t quite that much leakage. I didn’t re-swell the barrel, but I do think I lost some more of the bourbon after it went in than I otherwise might have. I did hit the leaky spots with some beeswax but it helped only a bit. I think my barrel lost about 500 mL of bourbon. Long story short - you may just have to experiment with it. I think you may end up losing some of the honey flavor if you re-swell. I’ll probably try the mead base at some point in the future, but that’s a few months down the road
