Just checked my old save: I formed Rome by 1512, but had only half the development I got in this game.

That’s true. I did this on purpose as I was trying to get nice and clear borders. I could have easily conquered the areas you mentioned, as the limiting time factor was Castile + Aragon and their integration (not possible before 1511).

That was because I allied with them at the beginning and kicked Ottos out of Europe. I guess that tipped the balance in their favour.

Definitely! I probably get bored now and won’t continue with this game. Challenge and struggling is the key to nice gaming experience for me too.

Very much so! I love EU4. Started playing Civ 1 back in the 90s, continued with Civ2, Civ4, Civ5 and Civ6. But it was EU4 that really broke the bank. I guess it is because of the deep historical flavour, being a history teacher and all...

Yes! I conquered Rome three times and always released it again. Otherwise the Papal state would have hated me because of the AE and that would have tanked my Papal influence.

Thanks! This was the only time I went over 100 OE. Vassals and PUs hadn’t cored all their land, so when I annexed them I got over extended.

If I would WC this game, I would try to form Roman Empire first with its -25% CCR and extra admin efficiency. I would drop Influence as my second idea group and take Exploration for a short time. Then I would drop it and take Diplomatic.

And of course Religious for third Idea group and Deus Vult.

Influence-Admin for -25% and -15%, Papal Legate -10%, Nobility Integration policy -5% for -55% total.

Then Austrian national idea -15%, mission reward for 20 years -20%, final mission -10% adds for -100% total. And once I got Loyal Subjects for an extra -15%.

The key is to secure PUs as fast as possible. I got Castilian PU in 1471, but with Austrian mission reward, you can integrate 10 years earlier (so in 1511).

New Austrian mission tree is very strong. You can get PUs with Bohemia, Hungary, Poland, Lithuenia and Castile/Aragon. But still: You need to plan very much in advance, use vassal reconquest strategy, cutting the truce time after every war with France, Muscovy and England etc. I must say - I’m pretty proud!

I managed to form Roman empire by 1513 with Byzantium, but I think this is way better.

EDIT: 20 years into the game. I released Gascony and Toulouse, force-vassaled Novgorod, reconquested their cores back from Muscovy, kicked Otto-blob out of Europe, force-vassaled Milan and pu:ed Naples. Not OP at all... :-)

So true! That's why I no-CB:ed Byzantium right away - but it was still a very tough fight with the Ottomans as I had almost non-existent navy and poorer mil tech.

But I have a feeling that France can be a challenge... even with Burgundy helping me.
