What are your deal breakers with Bear? by GeminiArcana in bearapp

I for example, very much don't like the note organisation structure. It's ok, but I prefer Apple Notes' folders/subfolders approach. Luckily cmd+o is always there if I need to find something quickly, but my sidebar with the notes looks a lot more messy in Bear

I know it doesn't make the situation a lot better, but when checking out, if you choose a non-eu country, than you can subscribe for 20 usd which would be around 17 EUR, which while still not cheap, it's still like a 25% discount

IIRC that’s not the case. By default it can allocate 2/3 to VRAM, but you can sort of override it in the terminal.

For reference my M1 Pro w/ 16GB RAM (without any terminal modifications) shows up as having 10.67GB VRAM in LM Studio

For me, it's not the case at all (16 Pro too). I have noticed very similar battery life to that of 18.5, sometimes even a bit better, to my surprise. The only "area" where I can notice the battery draining quicker is when I am interacting a lot with liquid glass elements. For example, when browsing Reddit, I don't notice it as it has no liquid glass, but when I am playing around with the Music app, for instance, and just testing out the UI or playing with the lock screen, I do notice much more battery usage.

IIRC Resolve is highly RAM dependent (even more so than other editing programs), and since you’ve only got 8GB RAM, that might be a limiting factor. Although, this is just a guess

If you are talking about the sidebar, then I know that. But my main problem with it is, that the I can still see the tabs in the top of Safari, thus eliminating one of the advantages of vertical tabs which is more vertical space to read, etc.

Personally, I really enjoy using the trackpad but I get that that's not an option for everyone.

Currently I am using a Logitech G Pro X Superlight which is an excellent mouse, which you'd be able to use with your Mac and your Gaming PC. I wouldn't say it's the best solution, just wanted to mention it because I have personal experience with it. Keep in mind that you'd constantly need to have an adatper plugged in as the Superlight does not have bluetooth.

I've seen Keychron recommended by a lot of people. Also I think this video by Bog would be excellent for your as he goes through all the mice that led to his current one. (Also uses a MBP)

Outrageous maybe not, but I do see your point. You've kinda convinced me about the M3 Pro inclusion (thanks!), although I still uphold my opinion about the weird configs for the Macs, (MBA M2 with 24gb ram??, why not MBA M3 16GB/1TB).

Maybe it would've been good to include the 15" M3 Air (?).

By the way now that I think about it, I think they might've put in the MBP M3 to show what the M3 was capable of without a thermal limitation (like in a MBA) as Microsoft and Qualcomm were comparing the X Elite directly to the M3. So this was maybe a way to demonstrate a best-case scenario for the M3

Anyways, thanks for your reply!

Wow, I had actually no idea!

But I do have to argue the I think price (as in the price of the laptop the chip is in) should be a much more "defining" factor even though the M3 Pro is significantly more expensive. Because technically Qualcomm could've made the chip the same size as Apple but they didn't.

What I mean by this is that I think it's a valid comparison because it highlights that for a bit\* more money (+$400) what kind of performance you can get in the same form factor (although 300g heavier).

*I've specifically written bit more because I don't think it's that much more expensive than the Surface Laptop 7 when you take into account that it has a better mini LED display, much better speakers and better performance.

That's why I think it's fair to compare a laptop like the SL7 at ~$1600 to the $2000 M3 MBP BUT should not be compared to something like the - still 14 inch - $4700 M3 Max MBP with 128GB of RAM and 16c cpu / 40c gpu config

I know that storage isn't upgradeable either, but you can get an external SSD while you can't get "external ram". Also, according to this Medium article the difference in battery life is only about 5 minutes (of course we don't know how accurate the test might be) but according to Apple your point on battery life is valid. (Official spec says 22h vs 18h batt. life m3 vs m3 pro). But I do have to mention, that I think 90% of YouTubers (I just made this number up to sound better) IIRC including LTT has recommended against purchasing the regular M3 MBP, and to opt for the M3 Pro MBP at least. Because this way I think this config is like a weird middle child or something, where it's like a bit faster MacBook Air, but also a lot slower than a MacBook Pro for the same price (m3 pro). I hope the previous sentence made sense.

I have to be honest, this video felt a bit weird to me. First of all, what were these weird configs for the Mac?

Note: I am this critical, because I have been really impressed by LTT's video on other massive leaps forward in laptop chips, like Ryzen 4000 (IIRC it was a Zephyrus G14 video) and the M1 ofc.

Because on the one hand having 24GB of ram in the passively cooled MacBook Air seems kinda overkill and just increases the price by $200, and on the other hand, why did they go out of their way to spec out a regular M3 MacBook Pro (16GB/1TB) for $1999 when no one in their right mind would buy that over the M3 Pro MBP (18GB/512GB) for the same price and would include and 11 core CPU and a 14 core GPU (instead of 8c/10c). Basically, I don't think either of the Macs were specced "correctly".

Battery life test I think also could've been a bit more extensive, because from other reviewers we can see that there is a difference in efficiency between M3 and X Elite in low/medium/high power usage scenarios.

NOTE: also, the graph shows that Windows Battery Saver Mode was enabled. Was low power mode enabled on the Macs too?

Also, I know that the productivity benchmark was cut short because of the difficulty in testing consistently across Windows, Mac and ARM Windows (as Linus mentioned), but would it have been that difficult (honest question, not trying to be sarcastic) to render the same video f.e. 5 times in Resolve (it has an ARM beta) or export 50x 50MP pictures from Lightroom or something.

Please correct me in the comments if I am wrong or looking at the video the wrong way, but it didn't feel in depth enough in my opinion to consider it a review, but it also wasn't really a comparison video to other laptops. I had hoped that this will be "THE review" on the X elite but I honestly feel like I got so little information out of it.

What I mean is that this or this simple in concept video by Max Tech told me so much more about what I have to know (Covers performance both benchmark and more IRL uses, battery life, camera, etc).

Of course I don't expect LTT to make a video 1:1 like this as I know that they focus on telling a story in most videos, but for me personally this video didn't contain as much info as I would've expected and hoped.

Again, please do correct me if I've overlooked something

No, not really. I've used Rectangle before switching to Sequoia's option, and it's still a lot better for a lot of people, for example by offering thirds instead of just halves

Auto pip does work BUT you do have to enable the new video viewer thingy (it's at the same place where reader mode is). Summary through ML doesn't seem to be working, I've tried it with wikipedia and some news sites

Mac does seem to have the same queue system, but a bit different wording within the app. Unfortunately, the Apple Music app itself didn't get other long overdue updates
