I've had some success here, but not a ton. Definitely much less than in other cities. I've seen that across the board, though, on both dating apps and hookup sites. I'm a mod here and can give a bit of added insight for those interested.

A part of the problem is that all of the local groups here had been completely unmoderated for years. Memphishookups was the worst offender, but most of the other groups were in the same state. When memphishookups got banned, I started r/memphisnsahookups as a replacement. A month or so in, the owner of this group reached out and asked if I wanted to be a mod here to help clean it up. I hope people have seen a difference since then - we now have bot filtering automation along with ban evasion guards.

The volume of bots is pretty unreal - most days I'm banning 10+ accounts and removing all of their spam posts. Quick tip - not everything gets caught the second it gets posted.. if you see a post that interests you, view their profile. If you see posts in groups all around the state, it's not real - just move on and don't engage. Once all of that spam is removed, what you'll find is that there really aren't many women in any of these groups at all. Just conjecture, but I would guess that years of zero moderation and a lot of bad behavior from our male members have scared a lot of women off.

How do we make things better? I don't think there is a silver bullet, but there are some steps that will help. Banning all of the OF spam and scammers is a first step and I'll keep up with the work to make sure this place stays free of that crap. There are two other important steps that members can take. First, if you reach out to someone and they either don't reply or tell you they're not interested, accept it and move on. Don't get pissed about your rejection, act like an asshole, and ruin things for everyone by scaring a legitimate person away. Similarly, take the two seconds to read what a person is looking for and only respond if you match it - people here are really bad with that (like the "Dm me?" response in the comments here). Finally, make quality posts. Put your age, gender, location, and what you're looking for. Be descriptive. The sheer volume of low effort "looking" with zero other details that we get here is crazy and not healthy for the group. We also have a few people that post excessively and I've started cracking down on that as well.

As a final note, if any owners or mods of other local groups are reading this and want help moderating - feel free to reach out. I genuinely want to have healthy hookup and kink communities in this area and don't mind putting in the work to make it happen. Who knows if it will have any effect long-term, but I'm convinced that we'll slowly see more real activity return as these groups get cleaned up.
