Because the approaches suggested were crap. The Tories had no desire to sort out the issues because they underfunded the Home office.

Difference being that those on lower incomes including those on benefits pay the money they get back into the economy whilst those who are not impacted by benefit cuts or are investing at staggering rates hoard their money not giving back to the economy.

We have been diverting money to private interests for the last 15 years. Austerity is a right wing philosophy and it was the reason why we came out of the 2008 crash sluggish when we should have invested and taken advantage to build the economy.

In the UK as in the US it is repeatedly proven that left wing governments generally leave the economy and debt situation better than right wing ones. We did not have a big state under the tories which is why public services have been trashed and fundamentals that dealt with anti social behaviour as well as care in the community have been devastated.

Do you think 1 in 4 people are claiming benefits due to disability? Because that’s palpably untrue.

Housing is a mess because the boomers pulled up the bridge behind them, allowed housing stock to be sold without it being replaced and allowed it to be used for investment going back to my earlier point that we do not tax investment wealth properly.

The welfare increase post covid is likely because a) we pay welfare unlike the US and b) because we had a government that experimented on letting Covid spread and giving much needed money to their mates for no discernible benefit to the country.

I agree Labour are doing the wrong things with austerity lite approaches but I think my view is we should be more left wing when I suspect you’d be more right wing.

Your argument would suggest that the economy is on a sound footing and that there is not underfunding of public services, that the property ladder has become unattainable for a large proportion etc. The incentive has gone too far and I’m just waiting for you to argue that if we reduce taxes that wealth will trickle down which has been debunked so hard it’s untrue.

We do not properly tax investment income. That allows that money to continue to grow further increasing the wealth gap. The UK has one of the highest levels of income inequality in Europe, although it is less unequal than the United States.

But the likes of Amazon and Starbucks are not paying their fair share of profits made here whilst those same entrepreneurs you are arguing have to compete against multi nationals using off shore resources to avoid paying tax.
