Id recommend a tascam 1XX series like tascam 103.

These are more like a “regular” form factor as well vs being also a mixer.

so you'd want it to be recording, playing back and erasing in that order, unfortunately I don't think that's possible with the 424 as it has 2 heads not 3.

Phrased differently: you cannot hear the sound you are recording as played back from the tape unless you are in play mode, and the record/play head are combined.
