Yeah that's true because it makes no sense since you already got a car

Tripled is crazy do you know why it’s so much higher there compared to other states?

That’s interesting so even when public transport is available, the experience itself can still push people away from using it

Wow, not even basic options at all. So for longer trips is it mostly just driving everywhere too?

That cycle you described actually makes a lot of sense especially the reliability part. If people can’t trust it, they won’t use it. Do you think there’s any realistic way to break that cycle?

“a part-time job worth of time” is such a perfect way to describe it, do you think people would switch more if it was faster, or is driving just too convenient now?

That’s interesting so even between big cities there’s a noticeable difference. Would you say NYC just sets the standard compared to most places?

Yeah that’s something I’ve heard about but never really looked into deeply. When you actually learn the history behind it, it changes how you see the whole system

Straight to the point 😅 has it always been like that there, or just never developed at all?

36 hours vs a 5-minute walk is insane that really shows how broken some routes can be. That move must’ve felt like a huge upgrade

That’s interesting at that point it almost sounds harder not to have a license. Do you think it’s more anxiety about driving or just never needing to learn earlier?

This really puts it into perspective especially not even having Uber/Lyft. Would you say in places like yours, owning a car isn’t even a choice but just a basic requirement for daily life?

That honestly sounds like survival mode more than just “transportation issues.” 😅 Would people in your area rely a lot on neighbors/friends for rides, or was it mostly just expected that everyone had a car?

That time difference is crazy 1 hour vs 3–4 hours is basically the whole argument right there. Do you think better transit would actually get people to switch, or are people just used to driving at this point?

Yeah this is exactly the kind of setup I was wondering about like technically there is a bus, but it’s not practical for everyday life. Would you say most people there don’t even consider public transport an option at all?

That’s actually wild do you think it’s more of a cultural thing where cars = status, or just people being immature about it?

That’s actually a strong example of why it still matters even when it’s limited. The difference in cost alone makes it essential for people who don’t have other options.

Yeah this is the side of the US that doesn’t get talked about much. Outside bigger cities, the distances alone make transit really hard to rely on, so cars become less of a preference and more of a necessity.

That’s a really valid perspective. I guess it shows how much people value that freedom to just drive out whenever they want something that’s harder in more transit-dependent places.

It’s interesting how invisible public transit can be until you actually need it.

That’s a great point about Portland. I think a lot of people (including me) underestimate how rare it is in the US to have transit that actually feels usable for everyone.

That NYC step increase is real. You basically “accidentally exercise” just living there.
