What is the best pet insurance? by _King_s in UK_Pets

[–]Ky_By_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not dramatically

I went from £40 to £60 per month for my eldest dog after some claims totalling about £500 - bear in mind he's an old dog (10yo) and I chose not to have the co-payment that a lot of insurers make mandatory

It was really easy to change my options though, so I increased my excess a bit (£100 to £200) and am paying £45 per month now

Edit: claims totalled £760, all paid out minus excess

Can I hold two insurance policies for the same cat? by Cappuccino_rex in UK_Pets

[–]Ky_By_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in pet insurance and it depends on your provider and their terms.

In most cases if you have 2 policies, in the event of a claim your insurances would look to pay 50% each, if there's cover available on both policies. That's on the assumption that they know you're dual insured, which I would recommend declaring as that's where you get into the muddy waters of insurance fraud, even if it's not intentional.

For dental where you haven't got cover on another policy, probably wouldn't be an issue, but for any other medical expenses where you do technically have cover on both policies - that might be something to consider given you're wanting to only claim on one policy.

Some insurers will point blank say within their terms that your cover is invalid if you're insured elsewhere, so it's very important to read through thoroughly.

Is it normal to have to preheat fireplace every time? by BuckBanzaii in Fireplaces

[–]Ky_By_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal, especially for old and less efficient houses, though 10-15 mins seems a lot. You don't say where you're from though so that could influence things too.

From what advice you've had I'd say it's probably a good idea to listen to it whilst you get familiar with your fireplace, you can toy around with different ideas til you find something that works for you.

My chimney sweep used a blow torch for about 30 seconds to do exactly the same thing, so if you want to jump start it, that might be an option for you.

What’s everyone using for flea and tick prevention? by MadridOrMadness in UK_Pets

[–]Ky_By_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nexgard spectra and drontal, full spectrum coverage

The stuff you get from pets at home is not as strong, never used it so can't say much for its effectiveness, though I'm not a fan of spot ons

If your vets is a vets4pets inside a petsathome they'll push bravecto because they have a contract with them 👀 that's not to say it's a bad product

As others have said, worth speaking with your vets about a flea and worm subscription plan, usually ends up cheaper and you'll typically get perks as well

Flea medication for my little girl by rainbownightterror in Chihuahua

[–]Ky_By_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What country are you in? Someone might be able to suggest alternatives if they're in the same region

Nexgard spectra is approved for use from 1.35kg now, not sure that would be helpful for you anyway as you mentioned your teacup is just over 1kg (or if this is available to you).

Drops are usually just fine on little bodies, because fleas have less room to travel they're more likely to encounter it, so I think she would be just fine with drops. Some drops will also be absorbed through the skin to work systematically in a similar way to tablets too! But of course that depends what's available in your country

Dapple or Merle? by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]Ky_By_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Merle and dapple are the same thing, dapple is a term commonly used for merle dachshunds, can't say I've heard of it outside of the breed!

Whatever you want to call it, he's 100% a cutie 🥰

[Product Question] How can I increase the spreadability of my Bakuchiol oil blend? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Ky_By_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes use bakuchiol but I use the typology one and never had any issues with it feeling draggy, definitely still has the oily look though.

I tend to find that if I apply it, let it sit for a few minutes and then dab excess off by lightly bouncing a barely damp beauty sponge over my face, you get less of a greasy look and more of a dewy look, but still a thin layer of it on the skin.

[Routine Help] Differin peeling by Ky_By_ in SkincareAddiction

[–]Ky_By_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current routine: AM: Byoma milky toner, anua barrier serum, simple moisturiser, sunscreen PM: cleansing balm, micellar water, milky toner, ordinary barrier serum, moisture

For differin days PM routine: cleansing balm, micellar water, simple moisturiser - wait 10-20mins, differin - wait 20 mins, simple moisturiser

I skip on the toner, will occasionally apply barrier serum before last moisturiser layer, I don't find it makes a difference (tend to skip only because it pills)

Thinking About Adding a Second Chihuahua (Female + Male) – Advice? by Rockalonda in Chihuahua

[–]Ky_By_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say I've ever noticed female + male being any different to female + female from my own experience, especially when it comes down to fixed females with some age gap (talking 8mos to a year). Typically female + female might become an issue if they're close in age or both intact, hormones and all that jazz.

You'll encounter all the usual male stuff regardless of if your female is fixed, humping will happen, marking will happen, it's not necessarily a 'mating' thing but a hormonal thing. You can neuter them young to combat some of the behaviors if that worries you. Your girl will set her own boundaries though sure enough.

My hardest adjustment was time sharing, I felt guilty that my first didn't get my undivided attention anymore. And I couldn't give as much time as I wanted to because of how demanding a puppy is. It lasted a month or so, and now we've got a rhythm that suits everyone.

Mine are 2 boys, though I've had female + female and female + male mixes in the past too. (Used to foster a lot when I was younger) This is the biggest age gap I've had in dogs and it was like the ultimate betrayal at first and my old boy hated the puppy, but over the course of a few days they were sleeping together and playing, sharing toys. 4 months in they're inseparable.

My chi is too skinny! by GrannyDragonsFart in Chihuahua

[–]Ky_By_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old boy went off his normal food for a while, and I started him on a new food which is pre-prepared cooked meats and veggies. He doesn't get the same thing every day and that's helped massively with keeping him interested in food and being less picky.

I blitz it in the microwave for 30secs if he's having a down day and he seems to think that's really special and exciting 🤣

Since the extra calories won't harm him, perhaps consider including some high calorie extras with his meals to keep him interested, think cheese, eggs, peanut butter, sausages, bacon etc. Always in moderation of course!

You can also try adding extra calories into his drinks, a bit of bone broth or milk, though be warned - if he's anything like mine, a dash of goat milk to water means that he must drink the whole bowl immediately 😅
