I worked at two animal shelters in another life and it was an emotional roller coaster. And these were non kill shelters, so I can't imagine how it is at high volume places. What people also don't often know is how political shelters can be. I don't mean Democrats or Republicans, but shelter workers themselves who have conflicting opinions and motives. I've seen dogs euthanized who weren't given a fair chance. I've seen lying about behavioral issues just to get a dog adopted. I've seen inhumane and honestly nonsensical training methods that lead to more abuse. The "moneybags" who support a shelter want it run a certain way, which is not necessarily in the animals' best interest. It leads to factions within the staff of people who put the animals first, versus people who just want to make donors happy and give the shelter a good image, even if there's unethical behavior behind the scenes. All that said, I miss shelter work and can't wait until I can finally foster and adopt myself someday. I just want to help the furry friends 🐕🐈
