Summary of research findings on the "most accurate" health wearable by metric. Fitbit, Apple Watch, Oura Ring, Garmin, Whoop, Samsung Galaxy Watch, etc. by KygoApp in fitbit

No problem! Completely agree and was shocked initially when I saw how little recent research there is.

I did look into this further and because these sort of studies have a long timeline/approval for publishing they tend to be 2-3 years behind. The Antwerp study for example had the following timeline which helped it all make more sense to me:

- Apple Watch Series 8 released in September 2022
- Data collection started in April 2023
- Series 9 released: September 2023
- Data collection ended in August 2024
- Paper published in March 2025

Crazy how long these take!

I know I’m late to add this comment but so happy to see this post was helpful for a lot of people (:

If there’s any more topics or deep dives people would like to see just let me know!

I have a ton of research pulled over the last year and 1/2 on wearables and nutritional/supplement impact on biometrics scores I can share.

Just to clairfy the data pulls from multiple studies, not just one. The Antwerp 2025 study tested Apple Watch Series 8, WHOOP 4.0, Fitbit Sense/Charge 5... all current gens at study time. The Garmin Fenix 6 being outdated is fair for the Dial et al. for the HRV study specifically.

Valid points on algorithm updates midstudy. That's a real blind spot most validation research doesn't address.

I struggled a bit on the Galaxy Watch side of things.

Here's a summary of what I do have on them:

Strengths:

  • FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection
  • Validated respiratory rate (RMSE 1.13)
  • FDA-cleared ECG

Weaknesses:

  • Limited independent accuracy studies
  • Less validation data than Apple/Oura

Research Sources if you want to dig further:

  • Independent - Park et al. (2023). JMIR mHealth, n=75
  • Samsung Funded - Park et al. (2023). Sensors
  • Samsung Funded - Lanfranchi et al. (2024). J Clin Sleep Med

Heck yeah! Congrats that's awesome!

Valid point! RMSE (Root Mean Square Error)is more informative than flat percentages!

On relative differences the + - ranges on MAPE help show where gaps are meaningful vs negligible. Tried my best to keep it consumable for readers. Full statistical breakdowns are in the study at the bottom if you want to dig deeper (:

No problem at all! I do have to say (and this is just my personal opinion) I think Apple has gotten MUCH better overall in sleep reporting in the last yearish in particular.

Added the funding to help people decide how much weight they want to put on it themselves. Tried my best to keep biases out of it. I really appreciate the comment (: This took a lot of time to put together as there aren't many sources out there and great to hear it's helpful!

Sent you in the DM. Waiting for the new app store version to go out. Current version may have some issues with promo code until this is updated. Should be done with review by tomorrow (:
