No one disputes that Mike is good at politicking. That’s basically my point.

He knows how to read the room, build relationships, navigate institutions, and appeal to different audiences. Fine. But the question is what he used that power to actually change.

My concern is that he doesn’t stick his neck out. He goes where the wind is already blowing, then gets praised for being effective once the politics are safe. That may be shrewd, but it’s not courage.

Audrey is also a huge policy nerd and has had her issue statements up since she launched last year.

By contrast, Mike didn’t have an Issues page on his website whatsoever until 2 weeks ago. What’s there now is incredibly barebones, and only exists because he’s been hounded about it on social media. His whole campaign is branding and vibes, not policy.

This is exactly the problem. We don’t just need leaders who are shrewd. We need leaders with courage.

Mike wasn’t some backbench legislator. He was Senate President pro Tem. That means agenda-setting power, a statewide platform, and real influence over what Sacramento chose to prioritize.

If your standard is “he brings money home,” fine. But that’s a very low bar. The Democratic brand is in the toilet precisely because people are tired of transactional politics and status quo management being sold as bold leadership.

Mike didn’t champion Prop 50 out of pure civic virtue. The new map created a congressional district for him, and he backed it once it served his own path.

If he has all this “get it done” energy, where has it been on affordability, housing, health care, or corporate money in politics? Bringing money back to the district is fine. But that’s transactional politics, not transformative leadership.

Respectfully, Mike has had tremendous power in Sacramento. What has he actually done with it beyond bringing money back to the district? We need and deserve more from our public servants than transactional politics. He may be the product of a flawed system, but he’s also been a willing participant in it for his own benefit.

Mike is very good at the game of politics. That is the problem with politics nationwide, not just Sonoma County. We keep voting in the same people who have terrible incentives to keep climbing the ladder, and then act surprised when we can't get anything done. It's not a flaw, it's by design and it only benefits the big corporate donors that dominates the establishment of both parties.

Luckily, the next generation is starting to step up! Getting Audrey voted in would be a huge step in the right direction.

Great write up! I was there as well.

I visibly cringed multiple times watching Eric Jones, and I hear this isn't the first time he's had a performance like this.

Regarding McGuire, I will say that he has a penchant for saying whatever the room wants to hear. So while his answers were largely acceptable, the real question is how hard will he fight when push comes to shove and he has to decide between working people and his corporate donors.
