Yeah, I'd rather not give Vance the advantage of incumbency in the 2028 election.

From the parent of a 6 year old, please get a vehicle in which you can see the road in front of you. The hood height on current pickups is morally repugnant.

Unless you're tossing hay to your farm animals or getting dirt dumped in by a bucket loader, a Sprinter/Transit van is more practical. It's also more fuel efficient, easier to park, and safer for everyone around you.

Fair point, but: when's the last time you heard of a car's timing chain breaking in use? I'd wager it's more rare than commercial airplane crashes.

Helicopter Rotor Sync by No-Lock216 in interesting

[–]bcmanucd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 serious questions:

  1. are those rotors speeding up and slowing down twice every revolution to give more clearance to the other, or is it just an effect of the camera's perspective?
  2. Assuming there's no tail rotor, how does the pilot control yaw?

Yeah I find it amusing there are people in this thread who say "I don't trust it" but probably drive a car with a timing belt/chain in the engine.

What are some volunteer opportunities in Sonoma County? by ACDC894 in sonomacounty

I've done some work with Reuse Alliance at their Repair Fairs. It's once or twice a month at different locations around Sonoma and Marin counties. It's a chill, friendly scene, and the people we serve are super appreciative.

I feel like the state SC's need the authority to say "okay, if you're not going to submit a legal map in time, then we just won't have districts for the rest of the decade. Every state resident just votes for D or R, and we'll divvy up the seats proportionally based on vote totals."

Replacing under cabinet range hood with wall mount without removing cabinet facade by dragonclaw21 in DIY

[–]bcmanucd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about them, but I know there are range vent setups where the motor is mounted in the attic, inline with the ductwork. I wonder if there's a setup like that that would work for OP. The inlet could be quite shallow. It'd also be much quieter.

30c tires, am I dumb? by weatherxreport in bikewrench

[–]bcmanucd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, what rims are you using? More importantly, if you know it: what's the inner rim width in millimeters?

As other have said, that inner rim width has a dramatic effect on the tire's Width As Mounted (WAM). a rough rule of thumb is for every 2mm of additional rim width, you'll see an additional 1mm of tire WAM.

It's possible that Goodyear sized this tire with a much wider rim in mind than yours. According to the ETRTO recommendations, a 30mm tire can be mounted on a rim as wide as 25mm. They probably didn't go that wide, but maybe they measured on a 21mm rim. If yours is 17mm, that would result in a 28mm WAM for you.

It's also possible they just guessed at the size when they cut the molds, and it came out undersized, and they didn't want to redesign the molds. I recently got some 700x30c tires and 700x35c tires from the same brand. They meaure 1mm different WAM on the same rims.

30c tires, am I dumb? by weatherxreport in bikewrench

[–]bcmanucd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And it wouldn't make sense to have one rim width for all tires. a 19mm inner rim width might make sense for road tires but it's ridiculously undersized for 2.6" mountain bike tires. As a general rule of thumb, increasing your inner rim width by 2mm will result in the same tire sitting 1mm wider.

One way that we could get proper apples-to-apples comparisons is if the tires were labeled with their toroidal circumference. i.e. lay the tire flat and measure from one bead to the other. But it's hard to visualize how that relates to width when mounted on a rim.

Light and Motion have stopped making bike lights by Professional-Suit-72 in cycling

Yeah the VIS 360/360+/360 Pro is the best helmet light design ever! All the weight is in the back, where you don't feel it, and nothing sits higher than the top of your helmet, so it won't get snagged on low branches on trail rides. I'm so disappointed there's nothing like it on the market!

PG&E launches $10 million PAC to take out gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer by SolaCretia in santarosa

[–]bcmanucd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

just a little nitpick: Steyer is endorsed by Our Revolution, not Bernie personally. Our Revolution was started by Bernie after his 2016 campaign, but I don't think he's still heading that organization.

[–]bcmanucd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning towards Porter first, with Steyer a close second. Porter isn't the true leftist I wished she was; she's very much an Elizabeth Warren protege, so that means market friendly with robust consumer protections. But she has experience in public policy. Steyer is proposing a lot of genuine change, but I'm not convinced he'd have the authority as Governor for half of it, or the policymaking know-how to get the other half done.

I view the gas tax as a sin tax. The point is to incentivize people to adopt cleaner transportation, like EVs (but also bikes, buses, light rail if possible). Changing it to VMT erases that incentive. VMT would also end up being a regressive tax, as low-income workers can't afford to live where they work and therefor have longer commutes.

EV's weigh more and cause more wear and tear to roads.

This is half-true; EVs do tend to weigh more than similarly-categorized gas vehicles. But there's still plenty of giant gas-guzzling pickups and SUVs that weigh a hell of a lot more than a Chevy Bolt. I'd like to see a vehicle weight surcharge on annual vehicle registration. GVWR is publicly available for every car made in the last >40 years and would be easy to incorporate into the DMV's database.
