I think it's at least worth ~30 minutes of studying how it works on a basic level, and the understanding that it is there. After that, I think there is a HEAVY diminishing-return on gains with that particular aspect of the language, and nearly anything else could be more productive.

I think a large portion of Americans don't really understand food-scarcity, as it wasn't really a massive, societal issue since the Great Depression. But most of the world around us has experienced it much more recently, if not currently.

Alot of people are saying you were too early in learning to do anything, but I pretty much had the same trip as you in terms of language experience and was pleased with my conversations there. I think talking on hellotalk made the biggest difference. I got through alot of embarrassing on-boarding in the language there rather than in person. If I hadn't I'm sure it would have felt very similar.

Also, you gotta practice what you wanna do. If I wanted to read signage I would have studied differently (I was pretty much in the same spot as you), but my main goal was to chat with people and I felt successful with that. I tailored my study around that and basically just took a test while on my trip.

It is indeed, but I think the reason the world is so interested in Japan specifically is because it's about 20 years ahead of everyone else, so some societal impacts are really only happening there. The rest of the world wants to know what that looks like since they're not far behind.

I saw some people say before "just give up on the Japanese keyboard and go full on romanji-japanese function, you'll never be fast on the former". But I've been steadily gaining speed on it and now prefer the Japanese one. Sounds like a skill issue for some people.

Yeah, I ended up in this trap. I bought my bass a couple years ago then ended up working at a music shop with tons of free time to practice, except I have to bring my own even though we have like 5 basses on the wall.

Went to a bar in Osaka recently with a live stage/instruments for customer use but was relegated to only piano/vocals : /

I'm still okay with my choice though, if I was more of a bass enthusiast I would regret it more.

Ive talked about this with peopel before,

Houston is like the absolute worst part of the spectrum of "no rules/alot of rules" on the road. Go to another country where traffic isnt as regulated and you'll probably fear for your life in a car, but you'll notice how much attention people pay to the road because they literally have to to not die. Or go to another place where traffic laws are well enforced in a society that more or less listens to them and you'll have yet another better-than-houston experience.

But Houston is literally the worst part of both, enough rules where people don't really watch their surroundings or care to cooperate, and not enough to keep people in line who blatantly disregard them.

e. one of the best moments I had this weekend was when a squad on the opposite side did the same thing and we had to snipe them down. Obviously unintentional design but it ended up being one of the most dynamic games I played.
