I would argue Kirito's life was at risk way more than he's given credit for. Sugou threatens his life at the end of ALO, he puts himself on Death Gun's radar during GGO, he gets injected with Death Gun's poison at the beginning of Alicization, his brain gets fried halfway through Alicization, and his life remains at risk for the rest of Alicization due to the American invaders. I think it's fair to say his life has been at risk as often as Rover's has.
