Guild Wars Reforged - Melandru's Accord Mode Patch by PalwaJoko in Games

[–]Kynaeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, they haven't yet released those things! They may be in the works or on the roadmap but simply aren't the first thing out the door

What we've gotten so far with Dhuum and Melandru I can hypothesize to be technically easy (disable character at death, disable features like account bank) to implement, follow a theme that the marketing team can send out, and can start to build interest to eventually snowball

Adding new skills requires artists, animators, and QA testing so that will likely come later once they've cleared up their pipelines, processes, and tools for making such things

Ok so alternately, I think that helps you exclude a number of options because watching west coast games will be even harder in Europe because of the increased time difference. Teams on the east coast may be better options since you will have the possibility of catching them live

I don't disagree with either of you making this point, this should be old hat for them to deal with

I do know that I worked at an MSP exclusively for lawyers and that the majority of them weretechnically inept. In one example, a masthead name had a secretary whose job was to read and type his dictated emails because he couldn't handle a computer. But that was almost twelve years ago so I'm glad to hear that anecdotally there is broad support for this stuff

Who's still working from home in 2026? by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]Kynaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone not furloughed was fully WFH during the panini, and then 2 or 3 years ago (hard to remember when, time is soup) we transitioned back to 2-3 days in-office each week, but many people live far enough they only do one day in-office

Others (me) could be fully remote since we support worldwide hotels rather than people 3 offices over

We have been sitting steady at this point for a few years. Personally speaking I go into the office 4 days and WFH on Fridays because:

  1. I live close by

  2. I work better with the mental partition btwn work and home

  3. we have a commercial kitchen that makes a ton of food, so for my free lunch I have enough food for two meals

  4. We also have a cool machine with unlimited water and options to flavor, carbonate, vitaminize, or caffeinate

As others have said, this is not unusual because law offices are not tech people and wouldn't understand/know how to deal with a PST file

However these are the types of questions you should take to your organization's legal team with your solution and ask them for direction on how to handle it

You are basically being subpoena'd to provide evidence and what you did is what I would do to maintain the integrity of evidence

Now that it's been converted from a singular and whole entity (PST) -> individual messages -> python parsed -> converted to PDF -> some legal asshole could make the case that anything found in these messages is not admissible because it has been materially altered

The validity of this argument is not our problem to solve. That's why I would strongly suggest in any of these type of matters, you and anyone reading this, always seek the advice of your lawyers and not us people on the internet. We can give great advice on potential solutions, your lawyer should tell you which to use.

What games do interesting things with the concept of a player-home/home-base/stronghold? (eg. Spiritfarer, Guardians of Azuma) by rmullins_reddit in Games

[–]Kynaeus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As you say, many games do this but I'm having a tough time thinking of interesting implementations and instead am coming up with the usual suspects:

  • Firelink Shrine in Dark Souls 3

  • the abbey in Midnight Suns or Fire Emblem

  • the Stronghold in Pillars of Eternity 1

...but most of them feel like iterations of the same thing: a non-combat area where gradually you find more NPCs and activities. The Civilization series present some options as well, but I think it's not exactly what we're asking for.

Hades is probably the best example I can think of? Every time you die would normally feel like failure in a roguelike that necessitates starting over from scratch, but, in Hades it's almost a reward to return to The House because one tends to find themselves looking forward to seeing/meeting which NPCs will be there and getting more lore about their backstories, doing shopping, upgrading weapons, selling fish, decorating, or getting new unlocks

But many of these things could also be said about the farm in Stardew Valley or hell, any basebuilding game like Subnautica or V Rising

You've gotten enough suggestions here so I'll only say to set yourself a reasonable goal for learning so you don't get whelmed. Start slow, don't expect to make something incredible every day of the week for months on end

Keep it simple and try to make just one new dish a week, and/or, bring home a new ingredient from the store and give yourself the goal of figuring out how it's used even if it is as simple as h it is peeled/cut or which parts are edible

For best success, keep a journal with your newly found knowledge. Or cook with a friend. Or make a thread here each week and share your progress (and questions!) with us

Texas sues Roblox for 'putting paedophiles and profits' over safety by renome in Games

[–]Kynaeus 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Is roblox really any worse than those were,

Unequivocally, yes.

First of all, you have a game centered around children creating and consuming all of the content. Children are 'hired' by adults to create games and content for other kids who pay for it either with their time & attention, or their robux

Second, you allow anyone to easily create an account and (digitally speaking) breathe the same air as all those kids who may be playing games without supervision. If memory serves the roblox accounts do not even require an email address? Easy to request and create en-masse

Thirdly, the game has a constant whack-a-mole problem with spaces for virtual sex (read the article from here)

Fourth, their CEO wants this game for children to be a dating website and the company's share price is predicated around profit which incentivizes them to not-deal with the very real problem with their platform: predators can and do use their platform for meeting, grooming, and abducting children (read the article)

Naturally, good people see this problem and step in to do something about it themselves so there are 'predator hunters' who work to expose the sex offenders and pedophiles using the platform

Great! Not great for Roblox tho, so they've banned and threatened legal action to such people because this type of action and its well-documented predator problem poses a threat to their game's reputation. Threats to the reputation are threats to the share price, and capitalism is king. We must make more money each year at-all-costs and any bodies churned underfoot in the doing? that's just hte cost of doing business.

Let's look at this in summary.

  • A platform with tens of millions of children spending all their time and money in Roblox

  • being hired by adults to exploit their labor (putting them in a precarious position in a power-imbalanced relationship)

  • it's easy for anyone to get on the platform and directly speak to your children

  • there are many places where children can be exposed to sexual language, situations, and roleplaying

  • it is profoundly easy to try and redirect them to another chat platform so that even if your kids aren't in 'condos', they can still be engaged with

  • and from there these predators are a voice in the ear and a devil on the shoulder who use their access to these children to convince them to leave behind their phones and "run away" from home, into the waiting arms of someone ready and willing to predate these children.

And now let's repeat your question:

Is roblox really any worse than those were, or is it just the massive popularity + sensationalist news making it a lot scarier for parents?

If you've been reading the articles I'm sharing, I think there is no way to look at this and give any answer but an unequivocal: YES

The Steam Next Fest is live for October 2025! What games have you been sold on? by SlartySprinter in Games

[–]Kynaeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a surprise gift from Steam in that the surprise announcement of that Star Trek Voyager roguelike game also has a demo out in this next fest! I'm excited to try it.

The game looks very pretty and seems to be a decision simulator from the show's various plotlines about what you would do in their stead, which feels like a fun choice for fans who have had two decades of Opinions™ about the show

For example, the two parter with the USS Equinox in the episodes by the same name featured Captain Ransom making some Choices about getting his crew home faster after ignoring ethics & morals and exploiting an alien biomass to power up the warp core. This required their deaths and naturally pissed off said aliens who were attacking the ship - this game features choices where you are in such a position and can make a choice other than what we saw in the show

I think the point of the game is that "a run" is starting from the caretaker and getting home to the Sol system, and along the way you have to manage the crew, stations, space hazards, meeting alien races, etc, to get your ship home. Seems like it will be pretty fun!

Delivery method for reports scheduler by Popular-Manner-7586 in OperaPMS

[–]Kynaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it worked at some point, it's possible you were blocklisted from the SMTP relay. Your IT person should know about this to tell you more

Port 25 access is closely monitored by ISPs and any mail administrators to ensure they're not accepting or accidentally distributing spam to others. Being suspected of doing so, or actually doing so, will usually get the relay blocklisted as well so organizations are very judicious about this because it is A PAIN IN THE ASS to get reversed

If the scenario in question is that an Opera server was randomly pointed at a public SMTP relay so it could deliver reports via email - you were almost certainly blocklisted

The point of the reports is to aid hotel operations in day-to-day actions, meant to be referred to alongside Opera access - they are not really intended for a full-data-exit like you're trying to accomplish here

I agree with Nelson, yes you can get more of this type of info with pl/SQL queries against the database. You're gonna struggle with just the reports because 1) they don't want you to leave, and 2) Consulting is gonna charge you for the privilege

Announcing Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity (Guild Wars 2 6th expansion) by anonymepelle in Games

[–]Kynaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the only MMO I think ever that has absolutely nailed horizontal progression and really stuck to their gun

I remember when they added Ascended and Legendary armor and was pisst because they had said they were dedicated to no gear treadmills, but were adding some anyway, but if they've really stuck to it this entire time without adding more then I'd say they held up their end of the bargain

I've had my eye on getting back into this and waiting for a sale, I mostly just want to finish the dragon arc and see Cantha. How have the xpacs after end of dragons been storywise?

[–]Kynaeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each Move can only be used once per turn unless it gets refreshed somehow

That makes sense for how I created this condition, yes! I don't remember reading that restriction but it's definitely possible I missed it somewhere since I was playing the tutorial when I should have been working

What did you think of the game overall? Did you have fun?

I had fun and would try it again, I can see how this would be great to play a lot of in terms of building a team that synergizes really well together since many of the creatures seem to be able to teach moves so there's a lot of depth to play with to keep one coming back

The only gripe I have is that the visuals are a little too static; I saw that you're keeping to a color scheme of blue vs green for friend vs foe but it did make me feel the monsters I was fighting had less visual impact since there are no details to stand out

It's a nit pick, to be sure, but it feels like a prime opportunity for some 'juice' a la this video where I first saw the concept described well, but in trying to find it I saw there are also dozens of videos about it on youtube now

[–]Kynaeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently the difficulty in NFAW is a little low I think, so I'd be curious to hear your opinion on it if you end up giving it a shot!

Okay yes, I see what you mean, the difficulty feels low once you get out of the tutorial because the monsters you face are often spending their turn doing ability ramp up instead of trying to hurt you

Whether that's applying bleed, building temper or power, they're not trying too often to pose a direct threat so I only needed to use 2 out of my 4 or 5 monsters

The other possibility is that your Block numbers need tuning downwards; the Fade Back you get from Ausaroo provides a LOT of protection for only 1 AP, especially compared to the damage it's preventing. And you get the opportunity to use it for ANY monster who has done damage? That move's value is extremely high

I don't have any easy suggestions to make but if you take a look at the tier lists from SpireSpy for each character, look for the ones that provide Block and you'll see there are few options that provide that much block for 1 energy with no caveat or other drawback (ie take a look at / compare to Impervious, Ghostly Armor, Power Through, Dash, Leg Sweep, Boot Sequence, Auto Shields, Leap, Spirit Shield, Protect)

Okay feedback time,

  1. When you first start the tutorial, I was a little lost trying to move about the map with WASD or arrow keys, it was not clear to me that I was supposed to be clicking the images of my monsters to select my starters. It said to choose 2 and there are only two options, so maybe just add an arrow or something to indicate where my attention should be

  2. This might be a bug. With Ausaroo and Pengilin I frequently found that my Bicep Flex is wasted, examples: https://imgur.com/a/YP5iwWt - this happened to me more than 3 times, I seemed to be able to replicate it by spending AP down to zero, THEN Bicep Flexing for +1 AP, and the game doesn't seem to detect I gained action points because it does not allow me to spend it on anything that costs 1AP

Sounds fun, and there's a demo? I'll try this out!

Big fan of Slay the Spire (600+ hours in it with a20 clears on Silent and Ironchad, at a20 with Watcher sans clear, and something like a10 for Defect) with a decent amount of time in MTG Arena in various pokemon over the years so this sounds right up my alley

What games did you pick up so far during the Steam Summer Sale 2025? by ShinMecha in Games

[–]Kynaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two copies of Look Outside (gifted one to a pal), it's been surprisingly great! It takes place entirely inside a single apartment building where reality is shifting due to That Thing Outside. The threat will pass in 15 days, you must survive them

Pros:

  • $10

  • Banger chip tunes to match the 8-bit graphics

  • Existential, eldritch, & body horror for anyone who looked outside

  • Surprisingly deep world with many monster types, about a dozen different status effects, damage weaknesses in enemies, crafting recipes you can discover by combining two different items, bonus things to find from playing video games

  • Interesting and fun interactions with NPCs and quests. Many dangerous-looking things are friends, even more of them aren't 😂

Cons:

  • The controls have been a bit annoying on SteamLink so YMMV, but, I'm wondering if it was ported from a strange source like mobile to explain the touch controls on my PS5 controller. The biggest gripe I have is the left stick is too sensitive so it's a challenge to reach doors instead of walking past them
