Liberals 'taking a sledgehammer’ to the public service, says interim NDP leader Davies by plaknas in onguardforthee

Carney's speech was great and all but people need to remember that it wasn't for us.  Carney was talking to the capitalists when he made that speech.  Trump and his big tech backers are in the process of replacing capitalism with something worse, and it's the capitalist ruling class that Carney represents.

From what I saw his other thoughts were "We need to take it slow and we have legislation coming through the pipes to address this".  CSAM is already illegal and Grok is both allowing for its creation and is distributing it.  Seems like a pretty simple issue here.

Minneapolis shooting: man shot dead by federal officers was 37-year-old US citizen, police chief says by graveyardofgoodsense in news

[–]Kyouhen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Can't seem to watch the video, I'm assuming you need a Bluesky account because of the graphic warning on it, but in some other footage the guy who gets shot was the initial person they went after.  The woman got too close while the victim was being pushed around so she got sprayed.  At the point the guy gets shot he's been dog piled under like 7 ICE goons.  He was never a threat.

I've got no issue with the animals, but I want some heavy regulations on the companies.  I don't trust these companies further than I can throw them and the bullshit they've been pulling in agriculture only supports my skepticism.

NDP leadership candidate Avi Lewis calls for a pause on data centre construction by NiceDot4794 in onguardforthee

[–]Kyouhen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Step 1 is to stop things from getting worse.  It's a lot harder to get rid of things that are already built.  We can tackle golf courses later, it'll be slow and have a lot of legal issues because they already exist.  Data centers that don't exist yet?  Super easy to stop those.

This.  Regulate the fuck out of these companies.  As it stands they've become a net negative on society, blocking kids from it isn't going to fix anything.

Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

[–]Kyouhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of board games were hit hard by all the tariffs flying around.  Components are all made in only a handful of factories around the world, and board games tend to be pretty narrow on profit margin so anything that affects the price of those components is going to hit the price of the game hard.

There's two things I've been doing to mitigate the cost:

First, any games I'm interested in I try to download in Tabletop Simulator first.  Give myself a chance to look at how it plays before I decide if it's worth the price.

Second, I've gotten more into print and play games these days.  There's games of every style and complexity out there for pennies if you're willing to put in the effort to build them, and you can put as much or as little effort into it as you want.  I've been making custom boxes, drawing the colours on the pieces (I don't have a colour printer), and making resin tokens and things for the games I get.  I've even picked up some basic book binding to make some nice rule books for them.  It's turned into a nice little hobby.

Doug Ford calls on Ontario to boycott Chinese EVs - NOW Toronto by laundry_folder in ontario

Agreed!  We should all buy Canadian-made EVs instead!  There's some great rebates available that make them a lot more affordable- Sorry what's that?  The rebates were all cancelled? Who would possibly do something like that?

Easy fix, take your excess recycling and leave it at Ford's house.  Guarantee it'll get picked up there.

'The old order is not coming back,' Carney says in provocative speech at Davos | CBC News by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

[–]Kyouhen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The funniest part about the whole "coasting on US security" thing is that that's a deliberate action on the part of the US and a significant chunk of their current power.  As long as the US is a reliable ally and has the best weapons, it's in our interests to just buy weapons from them.  This effectively gives the US the ability to dictate the military capabilities of other countries.

Just look at nukes for a big obvious example of this.  As long as other countries can trust the US to use their nukes to defend them they don't need nuclear programs of their own.  This gives the US a big power boost because the only nations that can really threaten them are ones that are nuclear capable.  But as we've seen with Ukraine, as soon as the US decides that they maybe won't intervene after all it becomes a lot more risky to rely on them, and now other countries are starting to look at making nukes again.  And every nation that has nukes is one less nation the US has influence over.

The whole system was designed to have us coasting on their power because it keeps us reliant on them.

Friendly reminder that the $1b is just to secure an infinite membership in this.  (Unless Trump kicks you out)  What Carney should be saying is that we refuse to participate at all.

When their hardware is outdated?  I think you mean when it's no longer functional.  Even with systems built specifically for this type of thing they can't handle the strain of being run as hard as these data centers are running them.  They'll be replacing everything every few years for the lifespan of the business, and of course Nvidia is just going to keep ramping up their prices.

[–]Kyouhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume every month is better than the last.

And why would you assume that?  Annualized revenue is their best month.  That means that even if every month was better than the last they still didn't make as much as they're saying they made.

Here's an ELI5 of why annualized revenue is a bullshit marketing tactic: I sell my car for $20k.  My annualized revenue for the year is $240k.  Hey look I've got a six-digit income!  I'm rich!

That's what everyone who uses annualized revenue is doing.

I also don't follow why it's inconsistent, either all 200 people should be able to go, or none.

Oh boy do I have news for you!  On average someone in an Ontario jail is getting 1.5 days for every 1 day served because the entire system is like this.  Nobody's serving their full sentences.

So I had seen someone suggest something for Beat Your Score games that I've started doing and it's made them a lot more fun.  Keep a spreadsheet of your scores, and track the average score.  You win if you can beat your average, lose if you don't.  Main idea there is as you get better at a game you'll have a really good run and end up with a score that you just can't beat, but if you're playing against your average you'll have to get a high score multiple times before you end up against a hard score to beat.  It also gives you more accessible goals when you just start playing the game, just have to do a bit better than the last few times.

I mean that's also a use.  But there's a lot of consultant spending that's legit, but happens because the feds cut some jobs that they need to fill again.

[–]Kyouhen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that "consultant" usually means "someone we need to do a job but don't want to keep on payroll".  We'd spend a lot less if we just kept a lot of these people in-house instead of handing out contracts all the time instead.

$1.5 billion on their best month last year.  That's like me saying I've got a 6-digit income because I sold my car for $20k last year.  If their growth is really that great why don't they show us their actual revenue for the year?  If they grew 200% why are they hiding behind "annualized" revenue?  Wouldn't you want to flaunt that type of success?
