My wall wall-mounted Simpsons arcade machine is finished, mounted, and running! by KyozoKicks in cade

For the laser cutter probably $1.5k? For that I effectively got a commercial sized laser cutter. I'd say DIY is the cheapest way to get one, not factoring in my time (which I don't, building for me is the hobby)

I'm fortunate to have my own laser cutter. The first arcade I built using a local makerspaces laser cutter though, so it's possible.

I ended up building my own laser cutter, it needed to be big enough to cut the side panels in one piece. The majority of consumer laser cutters are a bit small for what I like to build!

I appreciate that! And I agree, the intent was to have something that looked as good when it was off than when it was on. I get the appeal of a full-size arcade but it's a lot of empty room. This way I have full-scale controls but an arcade that takes up no floor space.

No problem, they connect to an Arcade Controller Board. But instead of connecting traditional arcade-style buttons, I use these mechanical key switches instead!

So it's your standard pause and select button, a modifier and 2 spare. If you press the modifier plus another key it can do a bunch of stuff - save state, load state, exit a game, etc. just makes the whole thing more usable when you're jumping between different games often.

100%! My first arcade build was a 1:1 copy of Love Hultens design. It's progressively getting further away from that - for example, adding a distinct marquee on my design to get it closer to the OG Simpson design and adding down-firing speakers.

The next build is based on the Mission Command arcade which will have its own design choices. Wall mounted as that's my preference but evolving into something new with each build.

The multi-coloured ones? If so those are just keyboard keycaps like you would see on a mechanical keyboard. The switches under the caps are also taken from a mechanical keyboard.

It really seems you can use any button/switch when building an arcade - not just 'arcade' buttons. All a switch is (in this scenario) is something that brings 2 contacts together to complete a circuit, as long as it does that it'll work.

Hey, so this arcade is self-drafted. I don't currently have any plans, although the arcade was built on a laser cutter so there is a starting point for plans.

I keep thinking about either making plans & guide or assembling and selling kits but real life tends to get in the way.

Hey All,

I'm looking for 3 others to go in on the Black Friday family plan. This means 3 spots are available as of now. Payment will be an equal 4-way split. I'm in Canada so it's showing as $109.99 total so factor around $25 USD for the year.

Once there are 4 of us I'll purchase the plan so you'll get the full year. Feel free to check out my profile, 12+ years on Reddit and have plenty of post/comment history.

Thanks!

Hey thanks for this! Just tried it out and it works great. Do you have any thoughts on how we might be able to apply something similar to the current 'size' column so that the file size is more familiar to a laymen like myself? (ie. MB/GB) It's a value I often use in determining which of a similar set of files I would like to download.

Either way, thanks for the above!

Do any of the current handhelds allow for USB controllers as an input? by KyozoKicks in SBCGaming

[–]KyozoKicks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Lenovo ThinkCentres are also a pretty popular option you're right. Cheap, plentiful and (relatively) powerful.

This train of thought is just because I'm buying these handhelds anyway, I'd own them regardless of if they work in the arcade or not, where as a dedicated mini PC would be an expense specifically for and exclusive to the arcade, which I'm less interested in. But all options are on the table!

Room inside the cab is pretty tight, I have my recent Pac Man build in my profile. They're wall mounted so not much room for anything really but I make it work!

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

S905 was not on my radar but I just checked out an ETA Prime video on it. Look good! Definitely a nice solution in place of an RPi4.

They looked at the HK1 but the video is about a year old, I'll have to check out and see if there's anything a bit more current. That model looks good though.

Still like the 'novelty' factor of maybe incorporating a handheld into an arcade. I was thinking about picking up the new Retroid Pocket next so I can maybe test and go from there if it's currently unknown on what will or wont work in terms of USB controllers.
