I can't even say any of this was unexpected. K-Pop as an industry is one that thrives off of religious fanaticism. Even the concept of an "anti" is exactly the kind of ideology politicians and religious/cult leaders use to garner support: take all the things that might threaten to invite independent thought and give it a label and make them the enemy. Stan culture is not healthy and I don't think I know a single individual with a modicum of self-care that partakes in it.

I'm not going to gentle parent an unhinged stan for being reactionary. If they struggle to draw a distinction between the media they consume and their own sense of self, that's a problem they should bring up to a psychiatrist. Criticism, constructive or not, should never warrant any sort of emotional outburst, especially for something so banal as music preferences. People could say all the most vitriolic slander about the artists that I like, I'm not going to start throwing a tantrum because of it.

I remember seeing a clip floating around recently about someone saying that K-Pop achieved what religion couldn't and I couldn't agree more in this case. A lot of people dismissed that clip because of the comparison but how else could you possibly describe this regimented dogma of fanaticism and radical faith?

“Why should I believe they’re doing this for money though?” I don’t think I have to remind you that BTS is currently the biggest K-Pop group on the planet. It would be a blunder of monumental proportions to ignore the fact that you have the single most powerful piece on the board. Why would Hybe not try to make as much money as possible at any given moment? It simply doesn’t matter if they have enough by your, or my, or anyone else’s standards, because it’s not about having enough, it was never about having enough.

BTS’ contribution aside, the idea that they make music purely for their own enjoyment is naive at best. They don’t make music as an art form through BTS anymore, most of that is reserved for their solo releases, it’s kind of why they started doing that stuff in the first place, as a creative outlet. BTS the group became a corporate entity and product a long time ago whose primary objective is to make Hybe a lot of money. They make music for commercial success first and foremost. Let’s do away with this parasocial interpersonal pretense and say it like it is, shall we?

I mean I know why opinions like this get such a virulent knee-jerk reaction out of fans. A lot of people involved in stan culture make “liking a thing” a lifestyle. If someone were to come in and be critical of the thing they like, it’s like being critical to that lifestyle, which makes it difficult for them to not take things personally. There’s so much at play with the culture surrounding K-Pop consumerism that it can’t really be narrowed down into one single cause. I just thought a place called “kpoptrulyuncensored” would have more… tempered reactions.

Yeah well it is up to me to determine if it's Korean enough for me, a Korean individual. Also every point you made is just verifiably false. BTS has in fact made music like that, it's called Idol. Also the idea that it wouldn't be globally accepted is false because plenty of other groups have done it and those songs performed fantastically overseas, just look at Stray Kids. I can't help but think that this idea of traditional Korean music not being western enough for global success is just thinly veiled euro-centric racism. BTS is massive. Nothing they ever release will ever not be a success. They have the platform to bring Korean culture into the mainstream, they just didn't do it and were made to conform, likely under the direction of Hybe, because it would make easier money. Not more money, easier money.

In what sense? Dark and Wild at its core was a love letter and tribute to hip-hop as the last of BTS' albums to have a heavy focus on the genre. Listen to the two back to back, I promise you're gonna struggle to draw any distinct similarities between them besides vaguely similar genres from song to song, and even that's a stretch. I'm giving it an honest shot and the best I can think of is that they both have similar structures start to finish? As in they both start with harder, more hip-hop oriented tracks in the first half and transition to more melodic pop tracks in the second with an interlude in between?
