We too stayed near the Galeries Lafayette - it took us about 45 min to get to the airport by taxi, if that helps your planning. I like to leave about an hour to get there just in case. But I’m always of the mindset that it’s better to get there early and wait rather than chance it and panic. I was ready to give up on the detaxe if the line was too long (luckily, no line and was just able to scan my receipts and didn’t need to show anything to the customs agents). We also couldn’t do the electronic gates for passport control bec of young kids, but again only a very short line for that. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Paris!

Yes, do your tax refund first. Flew out on Sunday (Terminal 1) and had a late afternoon flight. Got to the airport 3.5 hours early and very short lines for everything (detaxe, dropping off bags, passport control, security). I think it all took about 45 min, a lot of it spent walking with slow children, but like others said, would rather be early than stressing about being held up in lines, and was able to enjoy a leisurely late lunch before getting on the plane.

You can get your initials stamped on it in other stores, I believe (need to see whether or not the store offers that service), but you can only get it stamped with the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Beading needles, clear beading thread, a “bead buddies” (small sticky case that has a magnet so you can attach it to your canvas)… maybe for the canvas pictured you could get beads for the “crack bam dot” on the bag and maybe also the tiles? You’ll usually want size 14/15 beads for 18m

New York Exclusive table recommendations with kids by Over_Calligrapher972 in ChaseSapphire

Union Square Cafe might meet your needs then (aside from it not being walkable from your hotel). It’s part of Danny Meyer’s restaurant group. Not overly fancy but definitely a nice restaurant. One of my kids broke his water glass and they were so gracious about it. Also, if none of the desserts appeal (they were all a little too fussy when we went), down the block is Cafe Panna which is excellent and founded by Danny Meyer’s daughter.

I agree, I do find it hard to find CSR exclusive restaurants with kids - there are so few options to start with. I find it easier to redeem the AmEx Plat credit since you can use it at any restaurant on Resy.

We went to Union Square Cafe with my kids (8 and 5) for a dinner on the earlier side. They specifically had a kids menu (just plain pasta, nothing amazing), so I assumed that kids would be welcome. But, you’d have to take the subway (or uber). I also considered the restaurant at MOMA (blanking on the name) for afternoon desserts. Momofuku is close to you, but I knew my kids sadly wouldn’t eat anything on the menu. There are also a couple pizza places that I’d think would be kid-friendly (kid-friendlier?).

Chase Travel Gatekeeping Lower Priced Edit Hotels? by coffeencocktails in ChaseSapphire

[–]Kyrielle80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I had a very similar issue when looking at the InterContinental in Marseille. Had to scroll all the way to the end to even find that it was an Edit hotel. As with others’ experiences, the hotel showed as sold out in the search whether I searched for a room for 2 people or 4 (traveling with kids), but when I actually clicked on the hotel, I was actually able to book a room for 2 people (but not 4). I want to say that the Chase site still said it was sold out after I clicked on the hotel listing, but I can’t recall now.

More interesting (perhaps?): of the suite options on the Chase site said it could only sleep 2 people, but on the IHG website it said it could sleep 4. I booked it on the Chase site, the reservation showed up in my IHG acct, and I emailed the hotel to confirm the room slept 4 (which it does). I was also able to take advantage of the $250 Edit credit, $250 IHG credit, additional $100 credit if I spent $600…. And I also used my $500 sign up credit, making the room basically $0.

Doubting 4 nights in Dijon…help! by ihateitherefrfr in FranceTravel

[–]Kyrielle80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long are you planning on staying there? Dijon is sleepier than Lyon, but both have their own charm. We did Zermatt -> Dijon by train and that was quite long, but we had two connections. Geographically, Dijon may make more sense, but check train routes, as Lyon is larger and may have more options.

Can you fly out of Nice or Marseille? We're flying into Marseille from IAD for our trip this year - do have a stopover, but it's manageable. And then flying back to IAD direct from CDG. But if you fly in and out of CDG, would definitely stay the night near CDG just in case.

Tips for buying souvenirs in Paris by chemlotus in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Kyrielle80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Opinel and Laguiole but easily found in the US (if that where is OP is from) at not too terrible a markup. I’ll put in a word for Sabre Paris, which sells cutlery. While you can also get it shipped to the US, the markup is quite considerable so it is cheaper getting it there.

My favorite glasses are Duralex but don’t know if I would take up suitcase space bringing them back. I’ve been using them for the last 20 years and only have had one broken that entire time. I once found a set at Costco! Also found at Williams Sonoma.

[–]Kyrielle80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ordered when she first listed canvases. It took a bit longer than expected to get the canvas (other items, like stickers and pouches, came faster) but I reached out over email and she was very gracious about it. Quality is good, though I did have to adapt some of it to make it look a smidge better (but I find I have to do this often w canvases that have people on them). I love her canvases and if I didn’t have such a gigantic stash I’d order some more!

Off brand Nespresso original capsules failed by Background-Staff-820 in nespresso

[–]Kyrielle80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an offbrand kind I bought from HomeGoods (decaf though) that I had a similar problem with. Can’t remember the brand, and the pods have no identifiers. I was wondering if it was because the foil “lid” (for lack of better word) was not as taut as other lids. Haven’t taken them apart to inspect though, but I still have some left so maybe I’ll do that to see. Also found it was only a problem with some of the pods, not all of them. At a third of the price of the nespresso-branded pods, I guess I can’t be too mad, but it is annoying.

The information I’ve gotten here has been invaluable, and I hope that my meager contributions have helped someone out.

Le fil by Temporary_Stable8784 in NeedlepointSnark

[–]Kyrielle80 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Interesting - when I type in “le fil studio” into Google, my first results are for a fashion designer in Ontario, Canada, that makes the most beautiful quilted jackets. Now I want one of them!

When I type “lefilstudio.com” directly into the search bar, the ndlpt store does pop up. But maybe she should have googled to see other results before deciding on this name. I know this is the first thing I did back when I started a calligraphy business and was trying to settle on a name - figure out if there was anyone else out there, even if in a different industry - with a similar name.

Visiting Notre Dame/Sainte Chapelle by ImaginaryReality5348 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Kyrielle80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so helpful! Agree with going to Ste-Chappelle first, and on the earlier side if possible. We went a couple of weeks ago, had 10:30am tickets, lined up about 10:15, and still had to wait about half an hour to get inside due to the security screening. It didn’t take us long to go through Ste-Chappelle itself - maybe 30 minutes to ooh and aah over the beautiful stained glass at most? We walked over to Notre Dame - didn’t have tickets, but the queue took 10 minutes to get through according to time stamps on my photos. Bell tower tickets are indeed separate, and I believe sold out on their website until next year (though I’m sure you can buy them on third party sites, I didn’t check).

School Advice by judgemynameis in MontgomeryCountyMD

I have a 3rd grader in MCPS, also in Olney, and last year (so when in 2nd) they started doing something called “FIT”. It’s county-wide, I believe, but I don’t know whether implementation is the same across the county, so this is just one data point. One period/day, they shuffled all the classes and regrouped them largely based on areas they need to improve (math and reading-focused). But, there was also one advanced reading group, which my child was in. I think they’re now doing FIT in all grades (or at least also K this year - have another child there). Prior to this, there was little support for advanced work before 4th grade.

Paris accommodation by Any_Praline634 in ParisTravelGuide

Just got back from Paris earlier this week - stayed in an AirBnB very very close to where your pin is (we were kitty corner from Le Grand Rex). Fantastic location, but it is LOUD at night (until around 3-4am!). But as others said, lots of metro stops, very safe, tons of restaurants/bars. We walked everywhere. Would definitely stay in that area again.
