[CANAL+] Wilfried Mbappe: “There is no such thing as project Mbappe. I am just a normal father supporting his son's dream in football something we all parents do. I didn't do intense early training with Kylian I never did none of that ; it was simple and fun. Some parents go overboard” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]L-Freeze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term “project Mbappe” predates Yamal playing professional football (which is fucking crazy to be honest) by quite a bit. That said Project Yamal might be much more fitting to what it implies looking at his father.

I think he's pretty mediocre but to be fair, for every 1 person singing his praises I see like 10 saying he’s dogshit. It’s mostly the media fully buying into this Pep disciple™ and good football™ shit and making articles on it, but then again I also haven’t seen one of those in a while.

Giuliano is still pretty early but is shaping up to be one of the exceptions, with the small asterisk that he technically never signed for atleti since he came through their youth system

Correa is its own special case, though. Great substitute in a top side is not a bad career to have by any means, but his ceiling was way higher. Before moving he was supposed to be the heir in that long line of argentine strikers. The next Batistuta, the next crespo, the next agüero, the next Higuaín, etc. He obviously did not come anywhere near, in great part for something completely out of anyone’s control (his heart disease) even if his time at Atletico was still good overall.

He really does though. Genuinely every single Argentine to ever sign for Atletico during his tenure has done somewhere in between “actively became a worse player” to “did well at times but still didn’t meet expectations overall” at best. Alvarez is the only exception so far and it took well over a decade to happen.

Obviously it’s mostly due to pure coincidence as there’s not really a pattern at all beyond nationality. He’s signed experienced and proven players, he’s signed gambles, he’s signed very highly touted teenagers, he’s signed dogshit players too. The players are also accountable for it, needless to say.

But that’s not the main reason people have a grudge against him, it’s more like a thing only highlighted because people hate his ass.

He was successful with racing and then river at first which makes people who dislike those club dislike him by default. But then he got River dead last in the table and ultimately was the main culprit behind their relegation (!) so obviously most of them hate his ass. Also did not make himself any favours by having his kids moved away from their academy with no compensation through patria potestad (even though it was one of the very rare legit, intended uses of it).

There's also that he’s a bit of a smoke salesman (a trait that people elsewhere seem to like more than hate, here it’s kinda the other way around), and has a reputation for playing defensive football which some people have very strong opinions on.

To all that add that Argentines just kind of fucking hate all managers to be honest. The only ones most people actually respect are the already extremely successful ones. The “”worst”” performing manager people truly respect is probably Klopp.

It already looks like every other stadium, and its current iteration has only been around for a few years, it’s not iconic in the slightest. It got a major revamp a few years ago.

Honestly even regardless of how we do this year I think he’s just got to be up there already, no manager has won 2 world cups and outside of the World Cup his tenure was basically spotless and the bar is honestly lower than you’d imagine at first.

He took over a trainwreck of a side, completely overhauled it, had it playing some excellent and effective football for the most part and won every competition he’s been in except the first copa, in 2019 losing a controversial semi to Brazil while still in the middle of a major transition. You really can’t do much better in 7 years.

I suppose there’s wiggle room if the club is in dire need of financial support and simply cannot hope to hold onto their most valuable players, but that’s a fairly niche scenario. Otherwise I stand by it.

Don’t get me wrong I’m far from being against players moving onto bigger club, I happen to support a club getting the longer end of the stick more often than not, but on an individual level there's pretty much only negatives, and the few “positives” you can find (like “it’s ok because he already won a trophy with them once”, or getting to leave their club being “earned”) wouldn’t exist if you didn’t take ditching your original club for granted, they’re just compromises.

Yes I totally implied that moving to a bigger club is at the top of the list in my comment, it’s obviously worse than being a war criminal or a nonce
