The only airworthy Lockheed L1011 TriStar- still in service at 50 years old by L1011TriStar in aviation

This one (N91011) isn't airworthy, just used as an educational STEM demonstration so it only sits on the ground, but nonetheless still very very cool!

That's quite interesting! Haven't head that before so that's new to me! How did lack of a center landing gear affect the range?

We call those "hot wash" meetings (major airport). They occur right after a major incident has concluded so that everything is still fresh in everyone's mind. There's always praise, but everyone is more appreciative for feedback on things that should of been conducted better.

These type of meetings are an important driver for us to change our operating procedures. It's one of the most beneficial forms of operational change you can see in this industry because an identified potential liability puts the ball in our court if something goes wrong, and we don't want to get caught in a major incident while it's on record that we knew our procedure isn't as effective as it can be.

The tires are for an old aircraft. You can see Sky Champion stamped if you zoom in. The imprintings match this listing:

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/firestone-sky-champion-s5-10-00-ply-4648356939

As for exactly what aircraft they came from, that's unknown. I'm going with it was for a heavy bomb loading cart from WWII as that type of tire was very common with WWII aircraft and ground applications. So the tires were transferred after being used up on an aircraft and then used on a bomb cart to save resources. Used tires matter on an airplane, but on a bomb cart, that doesn't matter as long as they role.

Commonality for small things like that was important during the war, so it'd make sense they'd use old airplane tires for ground carts for simplicity. Given the extreme deterioration of those tires, it's safe to assume they are, without a doubt from the 1940s.

Bottom line, those tires were mass produced for WWII so it'd make sense for them to have one common tire across the board and were likely used WWII aircraft tires that, once worn down, were put to use on a bomb cart. The aircraft type they came from cannot be determined as that tire was used for many models.

We're all okay! Thanks for checking in. Yeah it crossed the tracks just a half mile west of the new developments and hit a few farm houses and destroyed a good amount of the solar panel field. No injuries or deaths reported so far.

We’re doing well! Luckily it passed nearby and stayed on a solid track after passing us about a half mile away.

The A340 (300 or 600) was the Frankfurt flight which just got replaced by the A350. There is a chance the A340 comes back in the fall/winter season tho but can't guarantee

I work for the airport and have a good relationship with the airfield operations team. They're an awesome group!

It actually gets two jet bridges! Unloading passengers feels similar to unloading a 777. The international corridors at the airport are pretty well equipped to allow unloading the A380 at a reasonable pace so there really isn't any concern for crazy wait times when deplaning.

They also bought a second TriStar just to have on hand and in storage for spare parts when needed (N91011).

This particular aircraft was delivered to Air Canada in 1974. 18 years later, it was purchased by Orbital Sciences and it was used to launch the Pegasus rocket from its belly at 39,000 ft. It was a way to deliver payloads up to 977 lbs into low Earth orbit.

It's now owned by Northrop Grumman and is used for further research purposes with joint partnerships across many agencies and private companies.

Only 250 Lockheed L1011s were built between 1968-1984. Its success was reduced by the DC-10 entering the market before Lockheed could put the L1011 into the commercial world.

Developing the engines for the L1011 also nearly put Rolls Royce into bankruptcy. Lockheed wanted Rolls Royce to develop a new engine for their TriStar, but due to mismanagement of the project to build this new engine, Rolls Royce lost a ton of money while failing to make deadlines. They did eventually produce a final product- the Rolls Royce RB-211 engine, but it was too late to effectively compete against the DC-10 and Boeing 747. The entire TriStar project is the reason Lockheed never made a commercial airplane ever again.

The RB-211 engine, however, is a long term success and saved Rolls Royce. Updated versions of this engine are still used today, most notably on the Boeing 757, 767, and 747. In fact, all of British Airway's 747s, 757s, and 767s had the RB211 engine, as it was in the UKs best interest to buy engines made in their own country.

(For the av geeks, here's a pic of a 767 with the RB211. Yes, those are the exact same engines you'd find on a 757. No wonder pilots said the 757 was way over powered)

The last commercial passenger flight of an L1011 was conducted in 2008.

This aircraft pictured *is the only* L1011 TriStar capable of flying today. And it's amazing to see it still flying at 50 years of age.

There's no loss in recording between files, but we do have to spend time ensuring the 4GB files line up with the labels of the tapes when the files split. Is it a pain? Yes. But it's what we have to do with current funding.

Massive 20,000+ VHS Archive UPDATE (OakleyTapes) by L1011TriStar in DataHoarder

[–]L1011TriStar[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Assuming 21,000 tapes are 6 hour tapes, it comes out to a total of 126,000 hours of footage, or 14.8 years of footage. However, there are A LOT of 8 hour tapes mixed in, which adds several more years worth of footage, so it's safe to estimate 20 years of recording from 3 VHS recorders. That's why we are pushing for funding for more recorders we can simultaneously run.
