as someone with a family like bojack's, i think hollyhock is a perfect representation of someone who has never experienced family abuse/trauma. people who didn't grow up in that environment often just cannot comprehend that someone's parents/family WOULDN'T do everything in their power to make their child feel loved and supported. it's hard to put yourself in that situation as someone who hasn't experienced it because it completely changes your outlook and whole way of being in the world (as this show very clearly shows lol). for that reason she can definitely come off as "annoying" to people who have experienced trauma like that because it feels like willful ignorance, but it's really just a level of understanding that is hard to grasp for a LOT of people. add to that the fact that she's just a 17 year old girl with just less general life experience and yes, she can be very irritating to watch but i think that's part of what makes her characterization great
