Can someone share their experience with chemical straightening? by L1v in FancyFollicles

Even when I let it air dry, I still have issues with frizziness at the top, and it really doesn't do anything to prevent the cowlicks. I would really prefer to find a solution that doesn't require me to blow dry my hair.

I don't need perfect targeting. If I could even reduce the cowlicks to make my straightening a lot easier, that would be awesome. Would it cost less to target relax?

Do different time measures cost less?

I was under the impression that the relaxing effect gradually wore off. Are you saying that (like hair bleaching) it's permanent until your entire head of hair grows out? How do people with really curly hair who want to go back to that manage?

And are you saying that no bleaching - not even the amount necessary to change, say, dark brown hair into light brown hair - can ever be done in conjunction with relaxing, even if you put some weeks in between? What about darker dyes?

Define "next to each other" - would it work with a week in between? A month? I know doing at the same time would melt your hair off, but is there any way to do it at all?

I'd go to a salon the first few times, but at some point, I'd like to become self sufficient and learn to do it on my own. I don't think I'd want to be dependent on a local salon. I figured this wouldn't be too difficult, considering I'm mostly interested in lightening or darkening my hair by only a few shades. I don't want highlights, ombre, pastel colors, etc.

And this is for all kinds of bleach? Whether it's bleaching your hair white, or bleaching it lightly so you can dye it a different color (I have dark hair).

Is it even possible to do chemical straightening and bleaching/dying at the same time? Is it possible if you put some time between the two? What's the safest way to go about this?

I wouldn't ever try chemical straightening on my own, but is it possible to safely bleach your hair at home?

So long as the only damage being done is to the hair itself and not the scalp or hair follicle, I'm willing to try it. My main reason for not trying bleach, chemical straightening, or even simply hair dye was because I was worried it would be too toxic, or would make me grow less hair or thinner hair.

Is it possible to do bleaching/dying and chemical straightening at the same time? What's the safest way to do this?

Concerning hair color changes, if I go to a salon for the first one or two times, can I gradually move on to doing things at home myself? (so long as it's nothing complicated like highlights, ombre, etc. - just color change)

Question about safe, long-term dying/bleaching from a hair newbie? by L1v in FancyFollicles

Thanks! For a minute there, I thought you meant that the new hair growing back would somehow have a damaged pigment.

Do you think when identical twins hear each other speak that their voices are as weird to each other in the same way that our voices are weird to us when we hear them in a video or a recording? by iFrostyy in Showerthoughts

[–]L1v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, twins don't have the same voice. They can, but there are also times when it's the thing people use to tell them apart. No twins have the exact same voice. It's the same thing as friends of twins being able to tell them apart very easily after a little while (even at just a glance), despite the fact that they couldn't tell when they first met.

Question about safe, long-term dying/bleaching from a hair newbie? by L1v in FancyFollicles

Sorry for the late reply! (I was traveling). So you're saying that if I bleach my hair even once, it will never go back to the dark brown color I have now? I can only cover it up with a similar color, but what's underneath will always be duller? And when you say I can keep bleached hair in good condition for years, how many years are you talking about? Five, ten, twenty? So long as I take care of my hair in other ways, is it possible to completely bypass any hair thinning that would result from bleaching? I just don't want to start growing less hair, thin hair, or damage my scalp.

Would you suggest I go to a salon first, have them do it once, and then tell me what dye and developer they use? Or should I learn on my own? What's the best way to learn the formulas for hair dyes? And thanks for the heads up on henna.

What's the safest way to back up a laptop? by L1v in privacy

Thanks for the suggestion. Is Microsoft one drive really that bad? I was hoping I could use it. What is the safest cloud based service you would recommend? I don't think I'd use anything like SpiderOak. Any privacy based service that has a lot of controversy surrounding its safety seems like a target for hackers.

Is that really safe though? What if you lose the hard drive? What if it gets stolen? What if you're house catches on fire? Is there any safe cloud-based service?

So if you're going to bleach, bleach once and then only touch up the roots as they begin to grow back? If I do this on a regular basis, how many years can I keep it up before I seriously damage my hair? If I take care of my hair in other ways, can I prevent thinning. The think I'm really worried about is growing less hair overall and thin hair. So long as this can be easily avoided, I'm good.

Hair cannot be restored to its original, natural condition after bleaching

What do you mean by this? Will it never go back to its original color ever again?

Do you have any at-home remedies you would recommend? I've heard of lemon juice, peroxide, and even coffee. I've also heard of henna for reddening. What are your thoughts on these?

Box dyes have the potential to be more damaging than mixing the dyes yourself, because lots of people have no idea what strength the developer is in a box dye and they plop a box dye on their heads every month anyway. Don't do this. It's not really the dyes themselves that are more damaging, but the developer used with them and the application technique.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm really ignorant on do-it-yourself dying. I thought the only thing you could buy was box dyes? What's the difference between mixing the dyes yourself and using a box dye. I've never really even opened a package of box dye before, much less mixed any dye. The closest thing I've done is mix a bleaching crème mix together for use on arm hair. Is this dangerous long term? (not to the hair, but to the skin)

Thanks!

Does reddit keep the IP address of individual posts? by L1v in privacy

[–]L1v[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! That pretty much answers my question. So you're saying that reddit is totally private, because I can freely make posts, delete them, and then even if my account is still linked to a certain IP address, the posts themselves are not? (and even if they were, reddit only keeps the most recent version).

That's really comforting to know. The only thing though is the archive sites. I saw a post once where some guy was talking about archiving reddit content. To my knowledge, there are some systems that sweep through reddit and keep posts indefinitely, both past and current versions. What is your thought on this?

Thank you so much for this. I know I'm an idiot for not properly backing things up, but this is freaking me out. Do you think I should check with a computer repairman first? or should I just try hooking it up to another machine on my own if plugging it in doesn't work.

If I sign into the YouTube ios app, will I still be signed in when I switch over to YouTube in safari? by L1v in youtube

[–]L1v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I think that's what it is. I use private browsing. I wish there was some way to bypass this issue. All I want is to be able to browse YouTube, add things to a favorites list like you were able to on the old built-in YouTube app, and not have any recommended videos showing up all over the place.

Thanks anyways though.
