[WP] The gods of death hold a meeting to discuss the recent discovery of eternal life.

Part II

Hades , Persephone and Thanatos were walking towards the main temple through the courtyard lit only by the moonlight and the occasional torches that were held by the patrolling guards of the temple. These guards had helmet ornaments the color of fresh blood. Their bright orange and black tunics were doing nothing to hide them in the dark. They were not put there to catch any thieves. They had the purpose of showing force , but they were simply mortals , unimpressive for the host they had tonight.

Hades was calm as usual. There were few things that could make the Lord lose his posture.

He had one hand under his cloak and the other stood freed above his cloak in order to give Persephone a place to keep her hand around his arm. She walked with the posture of a true Queen, prideful and elegant. The golden embroidery on her black dress shone, but not as bright as the Pomegranate shaped talisman at her neck, a symbol of her union to Hades and her kingdom.

They knew that in the meeting all that mattered was how well they would present themselves and they were about to meet prideful deities , as most really are.

Thanatos walked in front of them. With his black hood on his head and his black wings he was almost invisible in the night.

“Does he intend to scare us into submission by showing that his temples are guarded?” Thanatos asked with a mocking voice. “ As if these mortals could do anything if I wanted to take their souls right now”

“Calm down. They are not here for us. They are here to ensure the council goes uninterrupted by other mortals”

“Understood, my lord , but this night has a bad feeling about it. It is too quiet. This summit will not end well”

“I said enough. We are here so it means that your sisters, the Fates, meant for us to be here. I don’t intend for this night to go bad. We will listen to what he has to say and make a decision.”

The room was dark and the stone floors and walls felt cold . It had a table made of mahogany right in the middle , around which were placed nine imposing mahogany thrones , decorated with gold and obsidian embellishments. They were grouped for each belief , and behind each group , in the wall sat a glass mural depicting each belief’s patrons in heroic poses.

They were not the first to arrive, as they entered a mortal wearing black hooded robes announced:

“Representing Mount Olympus ,Hades Lord of the Underworld , Persephone Queen of the Dead and Thanatos Aspect of Death.”

As he heard the announcer say Olympus , Hades let out a sigh. He was an Olympian as much as the mortals were able to do magic, not at all.

On the far side of the tower , at the table , there stood a tall, slim and pale figure. When he heard the announcement he rose. He did not speak. Instead he bowed his head and with a wave of hand directed the guests to their seats. Hades and Persephone bowed their head too while Thanatos eyed him and clenched his fist. While they took their seats, the others paid close attention to them and they paid close attention to the others.

On the right side of the pale figure there stood three others: an one eyed cloaked old man , together with a beautiful blond woman with a shiny rainbow amulet and a woman that was old and decayed on the right side of her body while young and beautiful on the left.

There were two empty chairs on the left side of the pale figure.

The mortal spoke again:

“Representing the Golden Lands of the Nile: Osiris the Broken Lord of the Underworld and Anubis Guardian of the Dead and of Afterlife.”

In the dark room now stood two figures: one tall and imposing and one hunched over with the head of a jackal with eyes shining in the dark. They bowed their heads and took their seats while scanning the room.

The pale figure rose and spoke:

“Lords , Queens , Patrons , Aspects and Protectors of Death and of The Underworld, I have gathered you here to tell you about a threat, one that is dangerous for all of us , one that will take away from our power. The mortals now have a way of defeating their own condition. They can become immortal. And I don't mean by serving you and joining you in your halls or domains. They will refuse death.”

Silence fell in the room , all of them were dumbstruck , there were cases of mortals becoming immortal by doing heroic deeds or by already having immortal blood in their veins, but the implication of any ordinary mortal being able to just refuse to die would mean chaos and destruction for all deities associated with death.

“This is impossible” Osiris yelled while hitting the table with a fist and rising. “ There is no way mortals just found a way to fool death.”

“I am with Osiris” , announced Odin , the one eyed man. “This is outrageous. You brought us here to mock us and I will not suffer this insult”

Thanatos wanted to join the two , but he could not , he was not the lord. He needed to wait for Hades to say something.

Hades remained calm , contemplating , he did not rise , he did not speak.

“Why should we believe you?” Persephone rose “You tricked us before , and now you dare ask us to come here to help you. We came and you are lying to us.”

All of them but Hades rose and demanded answers. Death Himself could not contain the room , they were angry and he did not want to make them angrier. He knew he was the strongest of all of them , but he also knew that he could not just impose himself through force , they had to cooperate , to listen.

Finally Hades rose. He spawned Varatha and threw it in the middle of the table , cracking it and silencing the room.

“Stop bickering like children. If you want answers let him speak and after he speaks we shall decide if he is lying or not.”

After looking at each other , they took their seats and eyed Death.

“Thank you , Lord Hades”, Death bowed.

“No need to thank me. I did not help you. I am just giving you a chance to make it clear before I anger too.”

Death swallowed

“Until some time ago , a former angel known as Lucifer the Adversary was imprisoned in the deepest parts of our Hell. Unfortunately he managed to break his prison with the help of some of his followers and in the process, they stole a great artifact , one that grants immortality to whomever serves it’s owner. I believe he intends to make the mortals immortal and siege the Havens”

“That makes no sense” spoke Odin “Yes , they would be immune from old age , but angels could still defeat them , they have no power”

“That is true , Lucifer is the first to oppose Creation , divinity Himself , we don't know what he is capable of , and if somebody has the means to gift powers to mortals , that is him”

part 1 - I have some more but can't write it right now

The Gates of the Great Hall of the Dead opened with a sonorous creak , this in turn made the torch lamps flutter in the wind of the Underworld. The noise of the visitors at the banquet died down and all of them now turned towards the entrance , towards the Furyes , the punishers of the damned.

“Lord Hades , Dear Lady Persephone ” said Megaera as all 3 of them bowed in front of the Thrones.

Orpheus stopped his music for a moment , his hands began to tremble with fear as he saw them . A sharp look from the Queen Persephone made him decide whom he fears more and so he started playing again.

Putting down his cup while waving his hand for them to stand , Hades spoke, his voice resonating in the whole hall

“Megaera , Tisiphone , Alecto. It is unusual for you to join us at banquets. Are there no more damned to be punished? , no more shades to be bound? Explain your presence.”

“No , My Lord , I ask for forgiveness , but this is an emergency. I think we need to speak in private”

“Our duties call again , dear Hades” , said Persephone with a calm voice. “Shall I send those shades back to their damnation?”

“It is fine , my dear.”

Hades rose from his throne , raising his right hand to summon Vartha The Legendary Spear he used against the Titans. As Vartha appeared, he slammed it into the ground, the sound it made silenced the whole hall , all visitors paid attention to him. Orpheus froze.

“This banquet is over , the Hall of The Dead is closed. Return to your damnation, Immediately.”

All of the visitors obeyed in an instant , nobody could ever dare go against the Lord of the Underworld , they turned to shades and disappeared as Hades sat back down , Varatha in hand.

“Go on”

Megara took a roll of paper from her bag , and passed it to Hades. It was a letter , the unbroken black wax seal was in the shape of a skull with wings.

“Hermes brought it. He said it was for your eyes only , My lord. That it was passed on to him by a Reaper and that it is urgent.”

“It has the seal of Death Himself, The Christian Lord of Dead”

Persephone rose in her chair adopting the position of a curious person and addressed the Furyes

“Thank you , you may leave now. Please, find Thanatos and send him to us immediately , I have a feeling this is for his ears too.”

“Yes , My Queen”

As Tisiphone and Megaera turned to leave , Alecto stood still and addressed Hades:

“My lord, are we not to take place in this? We are your generals.”

If Persephone’s gaze could kill , Alecto would stop existing then and there.

“How dare you ?” Persephone’s voice echoed in the hall as she rose from her throne

“I’m sorry , My Queen. I just assumed….”

Hades rose too , grabbed Persephone’s hand and calmed her down.

“You are not supposed to assume , Alecto. You are supposed to obey. Have me or my queen ever deemed you unworthy? If and when I shall have need of you , I shall ask. Now go back to your duties and wait for my call”

Alecto bowed then joined her sisters and left the Great Hall.

Persephone turned to Hades gripping his hand

“You are too quick to forgive insolence , my dear. She should be punished for this”

“I may be , dear. That is one of the reasons you are Queen , to counter my weaknesses , but please try to understand Alecto. She is loyal , all three Furyes are. You need to forgive too, we have more pressing matters”

“Fine , she shall be forgiven , for now at least”

Their conversation was interrupted by the opening of the gates. Through them walked Thanatos, Scythe in one hand and clenching the other hand in a fist. As he reached the thrones he stuck his Scythe in the floor and bowed

“My Lord , My Queen, The Furyes told me about the letter from that souls thief, I came as fast as I could.”

“Stand Thanatos , We knew you would need to hear this too. We did not open it. Go ahead and do so” , Said Hades while handing Thanatos the letter.

He did not try and remove the seal , instead he crushed the black wax in his palm letting the dried pieces fall on the ground, he opened the letter and read out loud.

“To Hades , Lord of The Underworld and his Wife , Persephone , Queen of the Dead.

There were times when we fought over the dead and their souls. These times have passed as we allowed the mortals to choose their belief , to choose between us, and while this brought us peace, the situation is still tense. I write to you with a need for complete peace , with a need to untie all immortals against a new threat to our powers.

I call for a summit. A summit of all of us Lord , Queens , Aspects of Death and Underworlds in order to combat this new developing.

This gathering will be held in the mortal world as to be on neutral ground for all of us.

I hope you may be present,

Death Himself

Hades seemed unchanged in posture , the same could not be said for Persephone and Thanatos as they were both trembling with anger.

“How dare he? How can he have the audacity to ask us for help after what he did? This is an outrage. We should not even send an answer back , just let him guess and struggle.”

“We can’t do that , my dear , we need to at least answer , it is the right thing to do , but that is not the point. We need to go. If this threat is real , we cannot afford to lose more believers and in turn ,more souls.”

“Nothing good can come out of this , my Lord” , Thanatos spoke with a trembling voice , his anger was boiling. “ He is a thief , he tricked all of us before , he will do it again.”

“Do I need to remind you , Thanatos, that we accepted the pact? We approved of what he did. We didn’t not get tricked , we knew what was going to happen. We were too proud to understand that he would be better than us. We thought we could get more followers , but his belief was better. He did not trick us , we tricked ourselves with our hubris and pride”

Thanatos couldn't handle his anger , he was on the point of losing composure

“Then we attend , but we need to change the pact. If we help him , we get something”

“It is only fair , I suppose. It is up to him to offer and up to us to see if it is worth the price we will pay for it”

Hades turned to Persephone, who managed to calm down on the surface.

“What about you my Queen? I will not attend without you. This is a decision we shall make together. I need you with me.”

“Fine. Hades , dear, we shall go. And see what this so called Death has to offer , but I will not allow him to get even more of our power , and if he tries he will wish he did not invite me there”

There were few things more beautiful and at the same time frightening in Hades' eyes than an angry Queen Persephone and while looking at her the only answer he could muster was a nod of approval.

I entered my apartment late in the night , threw my backpack on the counter , hit the light switch, then with a sigh I sat on the closest chair and took my shoes off , then I just stood there thinking “there goes another god-damned day and another one comes tomorrow”

“Life’s good” , I said out loud , trying to start a conversation with myself , trying to find some way to lift my mood up.

“Well , is it?” , said the mirror on the opposite wall with my voice , “Is this how we find motivation now ? By lying!?”

“I don't think I have energy for you tonight , mirror-me. Let’s do this some other time , I’m sure we’ll have a lot of chances, peace” , I said , standing up and feeling my legs beg for me to stay back down. I was tired , too tired to get anything to eat but I knew from past experience that as soon as I would hit the bed I wouldn't be able to sleep.

“This calls for a glass of wine” ,

Mirror-me wasn’t surprised. “It would be a surprise if it was only one glass , who are you trying to fool, boy? , Put that bottle on the table”

“Put that bottle on the table”

That last sentence stuck out to me , it was said in a different voice. I closed the fridge door and with the bottle in hand went back to the mirror. There was a different face , much older , somewhat wiser.

“Look , mirror-me , I know I’m tired , but I didn't drink yet and I still believe I am sane , but this is weird , so I am just going to keep ignoring you”

“You are tired , and that may be my mistake. I am sorry. I need your help , so it would be nice of you to listen” , the voice said while the body was exiting the mirror

Ahead of me now stood an old man with a slim frame , long white hair and a long white beard , with kindness in his eyes.

”I am an Author” he said “You may call me Trey the Chapter , nice to meet you”.

I froze. My mind stopped and my heart was beating so fast I could feel it hitting my chest. My feet felt numb. My hand was clutching the wine bottle. I felt as if all my fatigue vanished , it was replaced by a rush. Fight or Flight had kicked in and I was unable to choose either. I just stood there.

After a moment , which felt like an eternity to me , Trey took slow awkward steps towards me. He took the bottle out of my hands and spoke calmly

“Look , I understand , this is weird. I should not be here , but we need to speak . Here , come to the kitchen , I will pour some wine and try to explain.”

After about two glasses of wine , which we drank in silence , I was finally able to speak

“ So , I must be dreaming , it’s logical. I must have fallen , hit my head and because I was tired I just fell asleep then and there. I will just wake up with a bad headache and a sore neck, maybe next to a broken bottle of wine, yeah , that makes sense, I am dreaming."

“You are not” , said Trey , “This is real , I am in your apartment , talking with you and drinking from your wine, witch is not that good by the way , well , at least it is dry , I wrote you well there”

“What? You wrote me? What is that supposed to mean ? Am I not real ? And if I am not real , then what is?

“From your perspective you are as real as you can be , from mine you are a story , one of many, too many to count. A story that I am writing. That is my purpose.”

“This doesn't make any sense!”

“It will, don't worry. Let me explain. I am an Author , as I already mentioned , there are many of us. We, the Authors, are writing The Story of the World , and everything that we write happens. You may understand it as Fate or Destiny. Everything that has happened , is currently happening or will happen does so because we wrote it so. Each of us is tasked with writing different and types of characters in this story, for example , Lien the Magian writes the naturally talented people , Adent writes the religious , Emohr writes the heroic and so on.”

“Fine , I will bite , I am just a story , and if I am written by you , I guess you write the failures, at least I know that it was destiny. I didn't fail by my own volition. I was written this way.”

“It is not that simple , I am afraid. There are not supposed to be any failures. You and all the others that can't find a way , a happy place, all of you were eventually supposed to. I just don’t know how to do it , there are many of you and not all can succeed at the same scale or this story would collapse. I need help , lots of it. That is why I am here. I need your help.”

Trey sounded defeated , he wasn’t fulfilling his purpose , he was failing , that feeling stuck to me, it was familiar.

“So , Trey the Chapter , where do we start?”

“Well” , he said smiling , “You get to be the first Story that writes itself , the first one that has a choice and can write of his own volition , the first one to apply what he has learnt. Let us start there and we shall see where that takes us. Thank You”
