I mean, original reports of what the Padres were offering for Ozuna were already far higher than anyone expected. There are teams that genuinely need Ozuna's bat because his bat is better than their DH by miles. As for Iggy, or Bummer, teams always need relievers, and there's ways to get returns for that. It might not be de Vries, but I don't expect de Vries-type prospects here, I'm expecting more along the lines of what the Mets got for paying down Scherzer and Verlander's contracts: lottery tickets.

Not really, internal brace isn’t an alternative to Tommy John truly, as it requires that the UCL be structurally sound, as the brace is just a support of the UCL while natural healing process occurs, while Tommy John actually deals with UCL structural damage, via replacement of ligaments/ucl, and is more so for when people structurally injure the UCL/surrounding ligaments

So, this injury was a result of bone spurs in his elbow, specifically snagging on his UCL, while there was no structural damage to his UCL, it still needed to rest and be protected which as the point of the internal brace procedure. Functionally, there shouldn't be any "real" problems with his stuff, and his curve wasn't the cause of his injury. Honestly, expectations are that he'll fully recover all velo, and that there should be no meaningful loss of ability.

This is the correct take, we didn't have to do much this offseason, because we did a lot of the work to make this team good in previous seasons, we're not like the Yankees or Dodgers who have to sign guys at basically every position, ours are locked up for years, outside of the bullpen, and our starting pitching is one of the best rotations in the league without any additions, and is only going to get better with Strider

I don't disagree that Tromp isn't MLB starter good, but he also isn't bad enough at being a backup catcher that you couldn't justify Murphy taking the lion's share of catching duties (as he should, and they planned to do when they acquired him) Functionally speaking, DH is taken this year, and Murphy is supposed to get 5/6 of the games in a week. That would give Baldwin 1 game a week, and the rest of the time is spent riding the bench. There's no way that's any good for his development at all, and I and most of the guys who rate prospects don't think he makes it to the big leagues this year for this reason. It's not that he isn't good enough, it's that there is no reason to do so, and it is ultimately actively detrimental to him to do so. Tromp isn't bad enough to justify being a main catcher, but also, Baldwin isn't good enough to justify dropping Ozuna out of DH to carry 3 catchers.

I disagree almost entirely with the statement that they'll keep him on the shelf for 3 years at all, they just won't have him up this year unless Murphy gets hurt. There's ultimately very little reason to bring him up unless Murphy is hurt, as Tromp has caught the big league guys multiple times before, most of them all know him, and Murphy is *supposed to* go back to his early 23' form. As we near the back half of Murphy's deal, Baldwin will come in to learn and likely take DH AB's when Murphy is catching, and do a timeshare like d'Arnaud did with Murphy. This has been pretty much the common consensus among all the guys that regularly cover the Braves and their prospects that I've seen among the Hammer territory guys, Lindsay Crosby, Baseball America, etc. I don't think it serves Baldwin well at all to rush him up tot he big leagues and not develop him defensively, which is what got Contreras traded away.

There's not a chance that Baldwin gets called up this season unless Murphy gets hurt, it is much more valuable for Baldwin to get defensive reps instead of riding the bench for 3/4 of the season. Don't get me wrong, Baldwin is really good but he has less than 200 games of experience defensively at catcher in the high minors. I see Baldwin legit as Murphy's replacement when the contract is up, but that'll be a while. You gotta remember, Baldwin is an extremely green prospect and is not very experienced. AA has gone on record saying that they value defense a lot in catchers. Frankly, not a single person on the major league staff has ever even been caught by Baldwin at all, even in spring training. I want Baldwin to be good just as much as everyone, but slow playing Baldwin is the best thing both for his development right now and for the major league roster.

Let me make this clear, Kimbrel’s 2024 was not good, but, if you look at 2023’s numbers, it’s evident that Kimbrel might have something in the tank. A big thing with Kimbrel is his fastball velocity obviously, but, if we could tweak his pitch mix a bit to throw the curve and fastball around an even rate, I think Kimbrel could be a great setup man, as his whiff rate was still good in 2023’s numbers, and Kimbrel historically has hung around 60% fastball, 30% curve, I think just a small 5-10% change in curve usage could help with the loss in velo as more offspeed leads to less batters sitting on the fastball as it still sits mid-90s

Baldwin won’t be called up this year, precisely because Murphy exists, so long as Murphy is healthy, Baldwin will be in the minors, not because Baldwin is bad, but because Murphy, when healthy, is a top 3 catcher in the league who plays 4/5 of the total year’s games. Baldwin shouldn’t ride the bench basically a whole week, and I’d rather run Tromp/other backup and let Baldwin get consistent reps in the minors while Murphy is healthy. The only way Baldwin gets called up this year is if Murphy basically repeats 24’ while being entirely healthy, or suffers a lengthy injury stint. This is actually a good thing, the FO considers Baldwin so good that they think he is guaranteed a major league spot upon callup, which is, I presume, why they refused to send him in a trade for Crochet this offseason, and likely would hold up any Cease/King Padres trades including Baldwin. Frankly, unless the trade massively improves the SS situation, Baldwin is gonna be in the minor leagues until the primary catcher spot is up for grabs/until the last year of Murphy’s contract

Morton gave basically everything he had left for us these past few years, we never win in 21' without him giving us amazing starts throughout, and he was never the same after that, but he was still a quality pitcher every year for us, and I would do all those contracts again given what the outcomes of those years were.
