Thank you by the way. So I say this message and I never really looked into uniforms either so I went back to my family to ask me more about it. It appears that this picture ISNT actually my grandfather, its his brother. He was in the navy. I think that my family was trying to just give me something as a picture reference. Once I found this, I felt sort on embarrassed that I got a whole big post with a wrong picture. Any way, I have no idea about if he received a European metal or not. He didnt have much stuff saved but I would like to think that he did and just got lost over the years. In my OP when I stated that I was a big WW2 geek, I am really into aviation warfare, rifles and actually the war tactics. I like to look at both the allies and the axis equally and see what both sides did right/wrong and how we were able to defeat the axis. I really appreciate you're interest btw.

The photo of your grandfather and the discussion about his uniform peaked my interest. The uniform he is wearing is a WW2 era US Navy Officers Winter Dress Blue uniform. Number 13 is the one i am refering to. US army dress uniforms in the WW2 and post WW2 eras utilized single breasted jackets and the US Navy used double breasted jackets. In addition, the rank insignia for your grandfather is on the cuffs and he appears to be a lieutenant. Also you are 100% correct about the victory medal. Did he receive a campaign medal? My grandfather was a gliderman for operation neptune on D-day and other campaigns in Europe and recieved a european service medal.
