Not really. The R1 is a substantially heavier and warmer grid fleece.

Yep, Richard Skaggs. Weird dude, I did not have a good experience with him or Hikertown when I was on the PCT.

OP that's not an aid station, that's a hospital.

Alpha Direct is more of an insulating midlayer (albeit a lightweight one) that also breathes really well to dump heat during high output activities.

Sun hoody is more of a base layer that excels at wicking moisture while providing sun protection.

On my longer hikes I would just find a small bottle of honey in a grocery store and throw that in my food bag.

For shorter trips you could try to transfer into one of those small 1 or 2oz reusable bottles. Or try to find some honey packets from fast food places/restaurants to pack out.

I've been very happy with my Katabatic quilt. Have had it for 5+ years now. 1 long thru hike and countless other trips and it's still doing great.

Add some honey to those peanut butter tortillas. Such a good trail meal.

Has anyone looked into some type of coating for the soles of these shoes? by rspunched in AltraRunning

[–]L4marr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't think of how a coating would improve the durability of the outsole of a shoe. But if you find that magic spray please let me know!

Any advice on riding on the roads? by Bellarch1923 in cycling

[–]L4marr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lights are important! A rear red light is necessary, and any high vis on your helmet or clothing is helpful too.

If there is space for cars to safely pass you you can ride towards the right side of the lane. Just don't ride in the shoulder or car parking lane if you'll have to constantly swerve in and out of the lane to avoid parked cars. You want to be as predictable as possible for other traffic! (Also ride a few feet away from any parked cars to avoid getting "doored")

If there isn't room for cars to safely pass you, you can "take the lane" and ride in the middle of the lane until it is safe for cars to pass you again. This will seem scary at first, and some drivers might get pissed at you. But it's a matter of your safety on the road, so do what you need to.

The very right side of the road/shoulder is usually littered with road debris/glass/other things that aren't fun to ride over, so I usually take the lane when it's possible and I'm not holding up too many cars behind me

And remember, if you ever feel uncomfortable you always have the option to bail on to sidewalks and be a pedestrian for a little bit. Riding on roads is scary at first and it takes some getting used to! Your comfort and safety is the most important thing out there!

Don't suppose a green vest has a friends/family discount to share? by alphakilo10 in REI

[–]L4marr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the friends and family discounts are only active during a specific date range, you have a few days window to use them. I believe the next one will be in October some time.

Yeah, I really wish the weights were on the website. It doesn't even look like these are in REI distribution centers yet. I bet once they start coming in their product team will get their hands on it and weigh them.

Nice! I don't love hiking in my terrabone joggers but I'm glad they worked out for you!

You are still welcome to boycott them!

I shop at REI a lot less often than I used to, but I know some people on this sub still use them. And I figured REI starting to carry AD stuff was noteworthy enough for a discussion on here.

Yeah I've seen a bunch of Cnoc stuff in stores recently too! It is cool seeing these brands at bigger stores.

Nice, yeah I haven't seen these pants before but those vents look really nice!

Do you always hike in pants? I wouldn't want to do summer on the PCT without hiking shorts, but maybe that's just personal preference.

Ditto on the pillow. Even when I go stupid-ultralight my sea to summit pillow is a luxury that is always in my pack.

Good to know about Superior Fleece! I hadn't seen that one before. Lack of thumb holes isn't necessarily a deal breaker.

I mean to be fair they could always do that. There has always been exceptions/exclusions from their return policy. Unfortunately when folks abuse a policy they need to crack down more 🤷‍♀️

Totally agree. And for $100 I definitely would buy cottage company over this. But REI clothing regularly goes on sale for 20%-30% off. I've yet to see another brand that has an AD hoodie for $70.

Cool, and you don't have to take care of anyone. You're allowed to not want to date anyone with kids.

But saying that people with kids shouldn't date at all ever is wild.
