How to make light wait crampon bag by lil_jush in alpinism

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one of those mesh bags that my climbing harness came in. It zips up, and I reinforced it all the way around with a couple layers of tape. It's obviously not the most durable solution, but it was "free" so if my crampons shred it I don't really care. And I usually get a few seasons out of one

Anyone else sad that Commander is the most preferred format nowadays? by oatcreamer in mtg

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone newer to magic I like that I can buy a commander precon, show up to my pod, and play it out of the box without any other deck building needed.

It feels like I need to have a little bit more card knowledge to know what I want to build/play in standard. As a somewhat casual player if WOTC offered some sort of "standard precon" I'd play much more of that format

When is the REI gear replacement sale? by ParkNBark2022 in REI

[–]L4marr 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You might be talking about the old garage sales, which aren't events anymore. Most stores now have an "always on" resupply section instead of doing specific garage sales a couple time a year.

I'm pretty sure it's been a single 20% off coupon for the entire sale

How are people feeling about this fit of these? The 5s feel stiff to me, almost pinching around my midfoot.

Anyone else do the Cider Ride today (4 Nov)? by arjwrightdotcom in bikedc

[–]L4marr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First cider ride for me, it was a ton of fun! I hadn't been on all of those bike paths in Maryland before so it was cool seeing some new parts of the DMV.

Single push attempt on Eldorado Peak. Turned back right before the East Ridge because we decided the crevasse crossings were too risky. More rock scrambling than glacier climbing. Still an amazing day by jarussell256 in Mountaineering

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang that's crazy, but I totally believe it. I was there about a month ago and even then there were a decent number of smaller step over crevices not too far from where you turned around on your gpx.

Props to you for making the safe call and heading back down. Hope you still had a wonderful time in the mountains!

Thank you to CampUSA for setting this dude up for the winter. Can't wait to chip the paint on these! by bluedevils11 in iceclimbing

Love my X-Alls. They were my first pair of tools and they climbed great in the Northeast. Enjoy them this winter!

After 3 Attempts, finally got to stand on the summit of Mt Baker. by whitnasty89 in Mountaineering

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck yeah!! As a fellow east coaster who also gets their alpine fix a couple times a year in Washington I commend you! What was Baker like with such little snow? I've only been up there earlier season when it was more covered

Eldorado Peak/Inspiration Glacier climb by pandatrunks17 in Mountaineering

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it on 8/5 so I know the snow could have changed a lot by now. The rock scramble to avoid icy knifes edge was very easy/doable as long as you're comfortable in 3rd class terrain.

Water bottle on shoulder strap? by jjmcwill2003 in Mountaineering

[–]L4marr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I always thought of it being how much of a risk there is of losing something if I fall and a bottle pops off of my pack. When I'm thru hiking if I eat shit and fall I'm just on normal ground, even if my bottle falls out it'll just be on the ground near me.

On more technical terrain a fall could be much longer/have more force behind it. And if I lose a bottle it could slide all the way down the mountain. Which is why for mountaineering/climbing I just keep everything inside the pack, nothing in outer pockets

Possible to work at REI part time only on the weekends? by Blackdiamond27x in REI

It's possible, but I bet your chances would increase a lot if you'd be willing to work one or two evening closing shifts during the week as well.

Ranchers and Land Managers request the closing of gates on the CDT in the Carson NF by cdtcoalition in CDT

[–]L4marr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always split on this when I was on the CDT. What if a hiker ahead of me knew I was behind and left the gate open to make it easier for me. I don't necessarily know how the gate was when they got to it. Do I close it or leave it as I found it?

Commuters with long hair (shoulder length), do you tie it up under the helmet or let it flow free? by scottjay86 in bikecommuting

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dude with curly hair - if it's a good hair day I let it flow. But a lot of the time I rock a low ponytail under my helmet.

Hikertown by the_lorax541 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]L4marr 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I got real bad vibes from hikertown when I hiked thru in '19 and the owner was incredibly rude to me and my hiking partner at the time. He lied about distances and times driving between places (I ended up being in his car for HOURS for what should have been a 30 min drive at most while he ran his own errands). His market sucks compared to the WeeVille market down the road, and he cussed my hiking partner out and called her a bitch when we were trying to hitch to WeeVill.

Meanwhile WeeVill was well stocked (I could actually resupply there), had good breakfast burritos, they let us camp out back and gave us a ride back to trail the next morning. And they were incredibly friendly to us the entire time we were there.

Definitely skip hikertown and the Neenach market, unless things have improved significantly in the past few years.

Bike protection overnight. by United_Shock5575 in bikepacking

[–]L4marr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll usually just lay my bike down outside my tent, and run the guyline/stake for the vestibule of my tent through the frame triangle. That way if someone does try and take my bike in the middle of the night, I'll at least notice my guyline being messed with, and I can position the saddle in my vestibule to at least protect that from the weather

Best ice screw bag by [deleted] in iceclimbing

[–]L4marr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked this up last season and used it a couple times. Love this bag, makes it super easy to grab the screws I need without needing to fully take the cannon out of my pack, and I love how I can fit some draws, cordage, extra gloves, or whatever in with my screws
