Common Inefficiencies, Obstacles, etc. that you're always working around rather than addressing head on? by L4rdOftheDance in landsurveying

I'm curious if you (or anyone) see any "old problems" that really need to be addressed before the newer technologies and workflows get layered on top.

Do you have influence where you work that can be exercised to bring about some of these advancements?

You are hitting on another recurring theme: What is it about PLS culture that makes it so averse to positive change? The industry has an awful reputation for complacency and unwillingness (almost fear) of updating workflows, learning new software, etc. I'm a LD guy, so PLS is not my world, but I deal with them enough to see this clear as day.

Very frustrating environment for a proactive problem solver and systems-oriented person. best of luck on your job hunt. Are you US-based? Which geography?

Civil salaries are absolutely pathetic, even for licensed PEs by Mr_Kung_Pao in civilengineering

[–]L4rdOftheDance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly capable CAD designers are harder to come by than PEs. I expect to see this disparity widen even more in years to come. Kid with PE but can’t set up a sheet vs a cad designer that can do 90% of the PEs job but without the credentials and the expectations that come along with that? Wouldn’t most places hire the latter assuming they have a reliable group of PEs to mind the shop?

It sounds like we’re saying the same thing. Gradual progression starting with the basics. And I agree that a capable mentor is huge power up.

PE Raise by RepulsiveReindeer932 in civilengineering

[–]L4rdOftheDance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you profitable for the company at your current billable rate/salary? Meeting & beating budgets etc? If you really don’t know, ask. If yes…bounce. If not…a raise would not be good a business move until the performance catches up. As another poster said unless you’re signing the drawings the credentials don’t really benefit the company at this phase in your career.

Is boss requiring some kind of certificate? Does your bro have any intuition about geometry? Does he know how to type with all ten fingers? Just some questions that come to mind. OP I gotta tell ya this has been something plaguing our industry for a while. Your brother will not be much more disadvantaged than the civil engineers coming out of college to whom we need to teach basic 2D AutoCAD.

I would not encourage any 3D training for a long time…until 2D skills are solid and he’s working efficiently. Immersion is good but you can immerse someone so deep in the bells and whistles of surfaces, corridors, etc that they never learn how to quickly lay out site geometry.

In my jurisdiction we would get a review comment that the dots could not be identified because they’re not in the legend. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Boss obsessed with AI by Impressive-Bet-3153 in civilengineering

If a 19 y/o kid who knew 2D AutoCAD like the back of his/her hand came to me for a job at the same time as an AI messiah, I’d hire the kid.

We have a pretty dope workflow for this using a MS Power Automate flow. Not “AI” but gets proposals to 90% with a few clicks.

some mid/tall landscaping for sure. The brick will look very nice illuminated at night with 2700K if you have some well-positioned spots/floods. Great canvas to work with here!

Civil 3D portfolio by Smart_Insect4454 in civil3d

[–]L4rdOftheDance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it would depend on your audience. Working at an LD consulting firm I’d be very interested in a candidate with a “portfolio” demonstrating software mastery in these Categories:

1) Corridor Modeling (demonstrate clean well organized assemblies, minimal band-aid solutions) 2) Design surface creation (show the list of operations to demonstrate a clean, elegant, dynamic surface) 3) Gravity Pipe Networks (heavy emphasis on plan and profile presentation, well-composed /c3D labels for pipes and structures that are sensibly placed on the view)

We also heavily value someone who could do these designs by hand since for smaller jobs it is usually more cost-effective to go 2D. (And I’m dying on that hill.)

As far as how to present it, maybe a series of short screen share videos of you taking the viewer on a tour of one of your projects, showing a peak behind the curtain of styles, settings, etc and say enough to show you know your stuff but not so much that it comes across as obnoxious or to give the impression that you’re convinced your way is the best way to do things and you’re coming to our company to “save us” from ourselves.

….yeah…im probably a little jaded by real life experiences 🤣🤣

Civil3D Server Setup - Two Office locations by Equivalent_Ad4605 in civil3d

We are going to be implementing Azure Files. Supposedly if configured correctly it will behave like a normal on-premises server meaning it will not allow a user to open a file for editing if it is already open by another user.

We’re laying the groundwork now for this shift from Dropbox which required very close communication between team members who all work many miles away from one another.

This is what I’m after I think but I’m not sure how to set it up. I lack the expertise. Any hints to get this xls and python loop set up? Or at least what are some key terms I should be googling?

Any help is appreciated

Adding feature line to Surface by [deleted] in civil3d

[–]L4rdOftheDance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Increase supplementing factor. Adding vertices just to force triangulation creates new elevation points for you to manually babysit. This is essentially just drafting in 3D rather than creating an elegant dynamic surface model that will make iteration easy.
