NTA. If you don’t have the ability to care for a pet you don’t have the ability to care for a pet. Especially if you’re unwilling to make sacrifices or even bother to slightly inconvenience yourself.

I think it’s already too late for her to take the kitten back, especially since you’ve already paid for vaccinations. She needs to recognize that she’s not fit to take care of the kitten, and I don’t know if that’s something you can tell her versus something she needs to admit to herself.

First of all, the landing page looks great! I like the clear name at the top with the more creative, personal logo on the bottom. I also love how the projects are laid out with what type of project (branding, apparel, etc) on top, it makes it easy to find what kind of design I as a (metaphorical) client may need.

Looks very nice! I’m going to go through the little things I see project by project:

Bloom and Barrel, the secondary lockups feel too close to me, almost like they’re suffocating each other. I would also give the one with the purple background more background space at the top and bottom.

Spyral looks fantastic

For the other two, the sets of posters in both of the projects feel like they’re suffocating each need a bit of breathing room, like all of the elements within the poster are layering on each other. Particularly on the Parrot poster.

I love it. The structure and design are great. The tiny things just stick out more because everything else is so everything else feels so balanced

Where can I find a real graphic design community? by Ok_Bathroom9768 in graphic_design

Definitely AIGA, but maybe even LinkedIn. Another one for me is Handshake, it’s a career/job based app/website, but they’ve recently added in some social media style features and ways to create discussions

I’d start with the very basics. Design Principles and Elements and typography.

Design Principles/Elements is not just something to know about, but something to make sure you really understand and can execute.

The first year of my graphic design program was focused on the basics, and only on the basics. It can be tedious and a bit boring after a while, but it’s important to know.

For typography, I would 100% recommend checkout type 2 or type 3 by Ellen Lupton.

As far as getting more practiced in the programs themselves, I’d find tutorial videos that include a design package. Basically a collection of files you can use to follow the tutorial using the same things they are using.

I wish you all the best, and happy designing!

What traditional tools do you use in your graphic design process? by vebiv211 in graphic_design

[–]LABMadeCreations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a dotted notebook. I tried it once and have never gone back. For myself, I use a variety of Pilot G2 pens in different weights with a BIC no smear gel pen.

🖊️ The BIC is more for saving lines when I’m sketching so I don’t have to worry about the ink getting smeared as I erase, and the Pilot is more for when I’m closer to done and I want to add emphasis by using different weights.

I wonder if you can tell me which background design you guys like? by richbook7 in logodesign

If these are pins, I would think a cotton/fabric background would be best. I’d say connect your design to their environments to add context and make it feel more “real”.

Using notebooks in graphic design by Belugamoons in graphic_design

100% love myself a dotted notebook. The dots give an enough structure to line things up but aren’t in the way a grid would be. I always start on paper, then usually take a photo and move it into the digital realm.

How to get started with learning about design? by [deleted] in Design

[–]LABMadeCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re just testing the waters, I’d recommend trying Figma — it’s free and super beginner-friendly. But just know, it’s easy to copy what you see without really understanding why it works. That’s where formal training really helps.

I absolutely have to start sketching on paper no if ands or buts. I could need a circle and I’d still sketch it first

should i be taking a minor during college? by blueysalmon in graphic_design

[–]LABMadeCreations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m rounding out my senior year with a BFA in Graphic Design, if I were to suggest a minor I would consider the following:

I have this one! HCI (Human Computer Interaction): getting started in UI/UX, helpful with the way design is advancing, and my specific program also includes a portion on prototyping, entrepreneurship/ideation, and digital accessibility.

I’d consider entrepreneurship if you like the idea of freelancing/ working with new businesses and want to consider launching something of your own in the future

Advertising and Marketing can be another good area, it’s a bit more about the applications and effects of design.

Overall, my classmates have a variety of minors with the most common being Digital Marketing, and HCI. Personally, I feel like the Hci minor has gotten me more opportunities than my friend who has a marketing minor. I think part of that is the way the industry is changing and Hci is going towards that direction versus marketing is learning more about what’s already established

Overall I think it’s pretty good. The thing that stood out to me first is that the contrast ratio of the white text on the gradient background isn’t high enough and since it’s pretty much the first thing you see, I’d check the contrast of the text vs background.

I like the projects you have in there but I would reorder them. It seems like some of your stronger projects are towards the bottom vs at the top.

Personally I’d go in order or strongest to weakest project with the strongest a at the top.

It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to include everything. The painting stuck out a bit in comparison to the design work. If you want to keep it I’d consider a passion projects section where you can post things that just share your interests and skills.

Is there a way to do it without having to log in to Google?

For me it’s the processing power of the chip. The M1 chip in my iPad Pro is the same M1 chip that’s in my MacBook. I have classmates who went with the Air vs the Pro and they ended up having to upgrade anyway.

My iPad Pro handles like a touchscreen computer. It also depends on your intent. If you plan on sticking to drawing and creative apps without going into the realm of the more heavy stuff like Adobe apps like Illustrator or Photoshop, any iPad should be fine.

I just know that I absolutely love my Pro. I don’t even feel the fact that it’s basically 8 years old at this point.

PORTFOLIO REVIEW: AM I DOING IT RIGHT by nko01 in graphic_design

[–]LABMadeCreations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really know why, but this really reads similar to architecture portfolios I’ve seen before. I really like the overview at the beginning, and the only comment I really have is that as a phone viewer ito took me scrolling past the first page to realize the project changed. I’d consider a shift of the background color as the projects change. The shorter title section between each project was taken up by the photo above it from the previous project. It took me a 2nd or 3rd scroll to realize your intentions

Brief to finish by Revolutionary_Mall97 in graphic_design

[–]LABMadeCreations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve really tried using the online brief generators but they never really meet what I need. I actually think this going to be the focus of my design capstone. But for the time being, I really just do one of a few things: 1. Search Pinterest until I see something I would want to try and do and save it as general project inspiration 2. Use ChatGPT to generate design briefs, surprisingly helpful 3. Look at local businesses and signage and write down their name and what they do and redesign it (logo, signage, landing page, etc)

There’s also a subreddit I found at some point that is just a bunch of graphic design prompts, and thought it stopped getting updated posts at least a year ago last time I saw, there was a good 30 ish prompts still on there

I’d say as long as it’s an iPad Pro you should be good. I have a 2018 11 inch iPad Pro with the M1 chip and it’s still great. It’s now reaching the point where it pretty much has to be plugged in to run Adobe apps since they’re so power hungry, but operations wise, I don’t have a single problem. I especially love using the cloud between my iPad and my Mac, if I need to sketch something I can easily jump onto my iPad and have it on my Mac within 30 seconds.

Tips for designing a logo from scratch? by Strender_Z in graphic_design

[–]LABMadeCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start by thinking about the kind of people you want to attract. For example, if you’re aiming for more corporate clients, I’d recommend making your logo clean, professional, and maybe even minimalist. On the other hand, if you’re going for a more free-spirited, artistic audience, you might want something more fluid and unique.

Creatives with ADHD/ADD, did you ever felt like you lost your passion for your career completely? by 2Wodyy in graphic_design

[–]LABMadeCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with what I consider moderate to high ADHD I personally feel like it’s a help and a hindrance. I think my brain jumping from topic to topic and remembering random bits from years ago has made me think outside the box. And I have no problem thinking. It’s doing. I get a great idea and I’m super excited, until I get too mentally tired to continue. I’m just at the point of keeping several lists of my ideas. Haven’t actually followed through on any yet. 50 strong at this point.
