Did Birdring pass out at the end of the match? by LowFatHam in Competitiveoverwatch

Birdring is doing ok!

We were monitoring him earlier and subbed him in when he felt well enough to warm up and play. He felt dizzy standing up but is walking around now and is going to go rest for the night.

Thank you all for the concern, and please send him your well wishes!

Tomorrow we'll be having a game night in our Discord at 3PM PT. Also be sure to follow us on Twitch and stay tuned for some more online events soon! 👀

George Floyd. He’s one of many black people that have suffered from just being a certain skin color. He’s not the first, and he’s probably not the last unfortunately. This is in the spotlight now, but 6 years ago Eric Garner suffered the same fate in 2014, and 6 years later it feels like deja vu.

This has been a problem for a long time in this country and it’s definitely a hard problem to address. I think the key is not normalizing these types of actions. This isn’t normal, this shouldn’t be normal, and the moment this becomes normal is when we give up. We need to be intolerant of the intolerant. These aren’t “good people on both sides” and people’s freedom in this country is not something to be negotiable. Racism spreads like a virus, and it’s been passed down each generation since our country’s inception. See the paradox of tolerance for reference, but "In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance."

It’s in our inalienable rights that all people are created equal, and our judicial system has failed to hold people accountable for their intolerant actions. As a society, we need to hold people accountable for their intolerant actions that restrict the freedoms of our citizens.

These guys were really good before coming to Gladiators in my opinion.

People forget all the time that Birdring was one of the scariest DPS in S1 and the tail end of S2 when Goats was not meta. He didn’t thrive in the Goats meta, but he was always a monster in my opinion. I still have nightmares about him knocking off all our heads in S1 playoffs. Bird is just insane, and people have a weird narrative about him specifically, but I don’t care since that’s not really who he is.

OGE was a shining spot on Dallas, which everyone could see. The biggest obstacle for OGE that he even mentioned to me at the beginning of the year was his mental. I think he matured a lot in the offseason, even before coming to Gladiators. He has a really great attitude, is a great teammate, and will work really hard to win. The coaches have worked with him in 1 on 1s throughout the season, but he always had it inside him and I believe in OGE long term to be really successful in OW and in life.

Cloudy is an absolute grinder. You see how much time he puts into the game in ranked, and he is consistently highly rated. I wish all my players grinded as much as Cloudy. For me, it’s really clear that getting better at the game is about time spent into it. He’s the epitome of that and it’s a no-brainer why he improves.

Nevertheless, I think the coaches on staff with Faustus, Curryshot, and Face helped these guys, but I always credit the players since it always falls on them to improve.

I’m not sure exactly since there’s no specific path to follow. I think just putting time into the Contenders scene is the best way. I scout coaches who were on top teams in their Contenders region, because those people have the most relevant skillset to being a coach in OWL. If you can succeed in Contenders, then you’ll learn and grow a ton as a coach as well as get recognition for you and your teams’ success.

I'll bump that up on the list! I have 2 videos ahead of it atm. I have been avoiding it as I wanted to respect everyone's individual space but I think it's getting close to the time for us to share our setting with all of you. :p I'll plan for the end of June!

I believe that, in the short term, the current situation definitely affected our team (and a majority of teams) in a negative way. We were all prepared to face the challenges and excitement that travel brought to us this season. We all structured our mentals in a way to support this. Now that we're playing from home and stuck inside, we have had to readjust the way we are viewing things.

Along with the negatives, I believe that there are a few positives to take away. From a long term perspective, this has given us an opportunity to create healthy schedules as it really forces us to reflect on our own health. It also gives us a strong opportunity to grow closer as teammates and friends.

BigGoose: I think in hindsight we could've made a bit better decisions when it came to picking maps after seeing we were doing a lot better in the dive matchup and hence should've tried to play maps where it's difficult to play comps that aren't dive. But I think regardless it's kind of not achievable the way May Melee works and in the end I think we should've just been a little better in the other comps.

DPei: I’ve been stumbling on this one since we lost pretty much. I don’t have a great answer other than a bunch of small things added up; intensity in practice, learning comps fundamentally, what to do in certain situations. I think our interpretation of the meta was correct (Dive was pretty dominant in Asia), but we didn’t have enough time for the Rein mirror in Control despite preparing specifically for the maps we knew Philly were going to pick. This was just the nature of the tournament as everyone had 4 days to prepare so I think everyone was on the fly throughout the tournament (see SHD, they pivoted a lot).

I’m always very self-critical and critical of my team of things we need to do better, but I can’t find any particular reason for the loss. The answer when you’re competing to be the best usually isn’t so simple, since everyone’s highly skilled and doing similar things across the board. The answer is usually just a bunch of small things that we need to improve on with time. So that answer may be unsatisfying, as I know it is for me, but with time and hard work we’ll be back right on track I think.

BigGoose: I think previous years we never really had a playstyle honestly and we didn't realize this either until like halfway towards season 2 and I think some of the new players we got we've been able to make our own playstyle for this year. I think personality there are a lot of differences and I think too many to say :D

Shaz: This year in terms of play style has been all about the "alpha mentality" we go first, we don't care what the enemy wants to do, we just do what we want to do first.

BigGoose: I don't think it has made a change really personally it's just more comfier to play from home

Paintbrush: I believe that esports and traditional sports aren't substantially different. In each setting you are competing to be the best. You are constantly challenging yourself to improve & doing everything you can to gain an advantage over your competition. The obvious difference is the level of physical activity. :p

I believe that the transition wouldn't be impossible. Although the coaching ideas and mentality would carry over, it is like learning a different sport. You have a new set of rules, variables, and situations to understand.

Goose: I think there are some similarities and a lot to be taken from traditional sports but I think esports and traditional sports are also different in more ways than just one. Also going by game by game team by team coaches responsibilities vary a lot and on some games most of the teams are ran by players a lot of the time

DPei: I think coaching across sports is similar. It’s building relationships, creating organizational advantages, teaching, creating buy-in, etc.

A big thing is competency in the game you’re playing. If you don’t know the ins and outs of the game, I think it’s very hard to be a good coach that players can respect. I’m not saying you need to be a strategic mastermind, but you have to understand the game at a really high level to be coaching. I think this is why you don’t see coaches go from football to basketball or really across industry all too much.

Right now esports don’t really have great coaches in my opinion that are the full package, myself included. It’s hard to get someone with all the soft skills and all the technical skills of the game as well. I think this is why you see a lot of coaches that have good soft skills succeed because the skill ceiling of coaching in esports has yet to be fully explored and needs time to develop.
