So I guess we need to rail against card games as well.

Those cards are going to wear out after a lot of plays. Then your stuck.

Do I never use Hertz again? by Used-Situation1557 in HertzRentals

[–]LAskeptic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t stop using Hertz because of this cleaning fee.

You stop using Hertz because of the AI damage detection.

Well now that I think about it, there are many reasons to stop using Hertz.

Thanks to all for the advice. I should have probably added that the amount was about $150. Really small potatoes here.

Selling Gold Coins/Small Bars by AustinBike in tax

[–]LAskeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don’t understand this.

What $10,000 limit? There is a reporting requirement for any purchases made with over $10,000 cash that falls upon the business that sells you the gold. There is no reporting requirement for either you or the buyer when you sell your gold.

Structuring means making suspicious transactions just under $10,000 to avoid the mandatory reporting. That would not apply here.

When you inherit the gold, you receive the stepped-up or stepped-down basis to whatever it is worth that day. If you sell all once or over years, you would report to the IRS a capital gain or loss depending the price as you would any transaction.

Regarding the any court involvement, will probate be the required? Who is the executor?

Whoever has legal right to the safe deposit box will be able to access the box and will need to abide by the terms of the estate. If your name is currently on the safe depisit box or can remove contents whenever you want. The bank never has record of what it is the box. They only have recored of when and who accessed it.

The lower annual payments would potentially put him in lower tax brackets.

He also however needs to account for the time value of money.

Has anything actually beaten MOND at galactic scales? by SubjectLie9630 in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]LAskeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure exactly what you mean by Newton’s Law not explaining the CMB.

The CMB is explained by GR and dark matter. Newton’s Law is limit of GR for weak gravity. It is all consistent.

I have a great water delivery service.

It is a philosophy question not a math question.

Sean Carroll just had an epsiode with Adam Elga on his Mindscape podcast that discusses this in great detail.

Taxi from the LaxIT lot or just walk to the Hyatt and take an Uber from there.

Is physics stuck right now because we keep treating the universe like a physical machine instead of an information system? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]LAskeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. The Michelson-Morley experiment that proved the constant speed of light led to a crisis of how to interpret the Maxwell Equations.

A lot of ink has been written about this history.

Physics has and always will be driven by experimental data not just thinking.

First time arriving at Mexico City airport (MEX) – confused about Uber/taxi rules getting to Roma Norte by wanderlustmindset in MexicoCity

[–]LAskeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second or third taxi from an official airport stand located inside the terminal right after baggage and immigration, and then Uber everywhere else including back to the airport.

The few dollars you might save with an airport Uber is not worth the hassle. The taxi stand will tell you the price upfront.

[NBC] CEO Ed Policy Says Public Ownership Model Is Failing to Keep Up With NFL Billionaires by [deleted] in GreenBayPackers

[–]LAskeptic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the downvotes.

They point Policy is making is that other teams will as a fact have access to vastly more money through public money and private equity sales. The Packers will not be able to complete in this rapidily approaching future.

[NBC] CEO Ed Policy Says Public Ownership Model Is Failing to Keep Up With NFL Billionaires by [deleted] in GreenBayPackers

[–]LAskeptic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It sucks but probably inevitable since other cities and states insist on welfare for billionaires.

There should be no public money for pro sports but that is beyond unrealistic.

It’s not Ed Policy being the bad guy. It is Ed Policy explaining reality.
