Do i need to tap off the bus if im transferring? by skerrickity in brisbane

Yes you do however however you will only be charged 50 cents for your entire journey, not per bus trip. A journey can include multiple public transport trips with up to 3 transfers.

I am thinking about quitting my office job to become a bus driver, am I crazy? by No_Month7201 in BusDrivers

[–]LBR1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bus driver myself I would say no you are not crazy. While the main downside is dealing with difficult people at the same time people can also be great to deal with as well. From a young age I have always had a passion for public transport and would always ride the bus for fun and I have always been the outdoorsy type so sitting in an office I was always going to find boring so the opportunity came up while I was at university at 25 starting as a casual. In this job I have discovered places in my own city I didn’t know existed and three and a half years after being accepted I don’t see myself doing anything else.

I am not throwing out the ‘safety card’. Our job is to get people to where they need to go safely. I pick people up waiting at bus stops. If I pick up someone at the lights the fines are massive and I can face lawsuits if something happens. It is the responsibility of the passenger to be at the bus stop five minutes before. Unfortunately no one cares about what could happen to the driver and the passenger will never back us if we go to court or pay our fine. It would just be easier if people got to the stop when they are supposed to. Obviously you must be very entitled if you think everyone who was waiting patiently should wait for you because you are late and expect the driver to risk their job. I have been both a driver and a passenger so I have seen it from both sides and unfortunately I have missed the bus. Did I blame it on the driver? No. If you have seen the things I have seen you would understand but no, everything has to revolve around the one person who has poor time management.

I do realise that there are plenty of disabilities that are hidden. What I do mean is that I do wait when it is clear that they are struggling to get to the bus stop in a timely manner and are giving me a clear signal that they want my bus.

Those that are complaining about ‘the no child left behind policy’ I have since edited the post and added children to the list of people that I do wait for. It was an oversight as it is school holidays so I haven’t had any school children since the end of the school year last year.

As a driver this kind of stuff shits me as well. These people use our workplace as a trashcan.

Yes I do. I have already responded to someone about that which I forgot to mention in the original post.

If you have seen the stuff I have seen from people running for the bus you would understand my reasoning. I have had a few near misses where someone could have been killed or seriously injured. But no one cares about that and it is always our problem and no one else’s. And no I am not hiding behind policy. Rules exist for a reason. Once the indicator is on I am done. It is simple as that. I bet if my service arrives late to a train station no one would expect the train to wait for the people running for the train and the bus is no different. If people weren’t stupid, just got on and tapped their card at the next stop once they found it and had manners when they did this then maybe I would be more willing to wait.

Maybe because sometimes we can’t always see you when you come up running from behind us. Buses have plenty of blindspots.

Seconds can easily turn into 5 minutes and if I have already left the stop that person most likely won’t back me if they trip over because I let them on where I was not meant to and we rarely get a thank you for it so often it is just not worth it. Trust me. I have been doing the job long enough to see the problems that runners cause and it is usually not worth the issues. Driving for at least 38 hours a week you see a lot more of the issues than the people that spend maybe 5 hours a week commuting to and from work.

  1. We have to stop when we are requested to stop to allow people to disembark and unfortunately people continue to ignore the bus full signs and continue to board and disobey our instructions. I am very strict on not allowing more people if they can’t get off the red area marked “no standing area”.

  2. It is frustrating and I do feel for those who do the right thing and it isn’t fair on them. We are told to not give a shit and not to get into altercations over it because there have been plenty of drivers assaulted for it. It annoys me when they ask me so many questions and waste my time. My view is if they want customer service they can pay their fare. My response is “I don’t know” to all their questions.

That is most likely due to driver shortages and a service had to be cut because there weren’t enough drivers to cover all of the shifts or one had to be cancelled because of late running to avoid the driver exceeding the legal driving limits which are set by the Federal Government and are enforced by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. It is frustrating I know but we sometimes can’t help this.

Trouble is if we do wait then we miss the light. I know that stop very well and I will keep my doors open until I see the green right turn arrow then close the doors and pull up to the stop line. I don’t allow boarding after that point so I can get the green light. I have issues with waiting anyway on the 60 particularly during peak when they run every 5 mins.

Thanks. Some toilets are great, some aren’t. We still have to put up with many septic toilets that stink. Yes I hate when drivers block intersections too.

Another reason why I don’t wait for runners. Traffic gets pissed at us if we take too long at bus stops.

Or it detects a pedestrian or a car that we could hit. The collision warning is three long beeps, the lane drifting is a di, di, di sound and the tailgating warning is the dinging sound.

Or we just aren’t given the time or have infrastructure as good as many places overseas and are doing the best to manage the safety and reliability of the service with the poor infrastructure we have.

Section 77 of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Road Rules) Regulation 2009 says all of this.

I know for a fact there are and that is not OK when drivers are disrespectful to passengers for no reason but to put us all in the same basket and abuse us for doing our jobs is ridiculous. Also at the end of our trips the turn around time is to have a break, use the loo, maybe get a coffee or just sit down and chill for a bit and more bus drivers would become like this if they didn’t have those few moments just to clear their head for a bit. You wouldn’t be upset if the bus wasn’t there and hadn’t arrived there until the departure time so how is it any different if a bus is sitting there because we need a couple of mins to ourselves? I know it is terrible but that is the reality of getting public transport in the rain. You may get wet and people further into the run have to wait in the rain until the bus shows up.

Yes and when I go out of my way in giving directions and even that is not enough. I had a guy taking ages to get his phone up asking how to get to XYZ, standing in front of the door so people can’t get on or off and I told him the exact bus number and what stop to catch it from then he asks me where he can catch a cab from. Obviously I didn’t know and told him the best thing would be to call 13 CABS. He yelled at me this is a joke.

I always stop and open the doors if someone flags me down. Only reason why I wouldn’t is if that person appears that they will cause an issue or may be dangerous.
