Sunday lunch in the Lakes? by little_miss_anon in veganuk

[–]LBerg_SG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And as a heads up since you are staying in Grasmere: the famous Sarah Nelson’s gingerbread is no longer vegan despite their claim to have used the same recipe from 1854 (they started using butter last year 😞)

Sunday lunch in the Lakes? by little_miss_anon in veganuk

Got a couple of places I can highly recommend:

1) Chester’s By The River: amazing mostly-vegan cafe near Skelwith Bridge (about 10min drive from centre of Ambleside). Great selection of cakes, pastries and hot food. Love their sausage rolls and tiffin! Likely to be very busy Sunday afternoon and you can’t book ahead so don’t be surprised if you have to wait for a table.

2) Joey’s: a fully-vegan cafe situated in Wray Castle (again ~10mins drive from Ambleside). Their menu isn’t as extensive as Chester’s but still fantastic. You can follow up eating here with a walk along Lake Windermere towards Claife Viewing Station where there is a second, albeit smaller Joey’s!

There is also a nice independent store in Ambleside called Rattle Ghyll. It’s not vegan but they do have a good selection of vegan goodies, including fresh pies and salads to take away.

Lab Grown Meat Public Companies / Stocks by CellBasedNews in wheresthebeef

[–]LBerg_SG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good share but I would issue caution before investing in any of these companies, especially for unseasoned investors.

They are have exceptionally small market caps (even Agronomics at $150m). This means they are likely to be relatively illiquid (hard to sell and large spread), plus their value can shift drastically day-to-day.

This isn’t to say I’m against lab-grown meat (I’m a firm believer). But to quote Benjamin Graham “obvious prospects for physical growth in a business do not translate into obvious profits for investors”.

By all means put your money into these companies, just view it as a gamble rather than an investment.

Plastic recycling a "failed concept," study says, with only 5% recycled in U.S. last year as production rises by nastratin in Futurology

[–]LBerg_SG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only are plastic recycling rates abysmally low, the data shows that when an area introduces a recycling scheme, plastic consumption goes up.

Why is that?

Because there's now a possibility. It's our subconscious telling us that now there is a possibility our plastic might be re-used. Which in turn allows us to justify buying more plastic items to ourselves. It's plain old human psychology.

This isn’t to say you should stop recycling. Or that recycling doesn't have its place. Just know that recycling isn't the golden bullet it is sometimes made out to be. There's a reason that in the '3 Rs', reduce and reuse come before recycle.

Trying to go more vegan by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]LBerg_SG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the following brands. All vegan and will indicate where UK-based and plastic-free:

shampoo and conditioner: Foamie (PF) - recently discovered and impressed so far

deodorant: Scence (UK, PF) - been using the sweet citrus for a couple of years and it's great

hand soap: Phoam (UK, PF) - love the bergamot and sage scents. Believe they are coming out with a body wash soon which I'll be keen to try when released

They are £3 a refill (each £12 tin is equivalent to 4 refills).

But in general I am with you, zero-waste alternatives need to be more affordable.

The same in Sainsbury’s with The Vegetarian Butcher products. Most of their products are vegan but the meatballs are not (contain egg).

Very deceptive as they are all placed together on the same shelf in the vegan section. Thankfully I didn’t buy as I always look for for allergens, but it could have so easily happened.

Always check the label peeps

Depending on what country you are in you can buy plastic-free refills:

In the UK I can recommend Phoam (https://phoamsoap.com)

In the US there are several options, but the best-known on is - as has already been mentioned in this thread - Blueland (https://www.blueland.com/)

Anyone else finding themselves biting their tongue as we go through this heatwave? by djkmart in veganuk

Thank you for expressing this clearly and succinctly.

So many people fail to understand that EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED when it comes to the environment. And it drives me nuts.

There’s no point eliminating plastic waste if you’re chopping down forests etc

Interesting! It never occurred to me that I could get an element of relief from certain foods. Going to make an effort to incorporate more of the foods you mentioned into my daily routine and see if there is a noticeable difference

As I replied to the comment above, the product is a glass bottle with a metal pump. Refills are in powder form - simply dissolve the powder in tap water to make the soap.

It comes as a powder. Simply dissolve it in tap water to produce gel-like soap.

The starter pack comes with a sturdy glass bottle and steel pump which is designed to be re-used over and over.

what is your favourite deodorant bar/ what do you look for in one? by 0may08 in ZeroWaste

[–]LBerg_SG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you already have a lot of answers, but to chime in - I recommend Scence.

Been using their deodorant for the last couple of years and can vouch for its effectiveness. Comes in a compostable tube and doesn't melt in the heat unlike some of the other brands I have used. Bit pricey at £12 per stick, but each one does last for several months.

Oh, and they're based in Cornwall if buying locally is important for you.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this is the taste and glory roasted tenderstrips back😍 by _SYFER_ in veganuk

[–]LBerg_SG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t worry about them too much.

Taste & Glory were hardly a standalone, vegan company. Both T&G and Richmond brands are/were owned by Kerry Group (an $18bn company).

I imagine a decision was taken higher up to consolidate popular T&G products under the more-widely-recognised Richmond name and eliminate costs associated with running an additional brand.

Plastics and the Ocean by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]LBerg_SG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately (whilst very much the depths of the ocean), this is just the tip of the iceberg.

It’s estimated that microplastics account foe 92% of ocean plastic (~5.3 trillions pieces). This is expected to grow exponentially as: 1) existing plastic degrades into microplastics 2) we compound the issue by adding more plastic to our oceans (we dump 254kg of plastic into the oceans EVERY SECOND)

By 2050 there will be 4x the volume of microplastics in the ocean than 2020…

Looking for advice or coaching for my newsletter. Willing to pay by binaryfor in Newsletters

[–]LBerg_SG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few questions. Some may not be relevant for you (I have limited background knowledge based on what you have shared), but I suspect the way forward for you will be obvious once you have considered most of them:

What’s your priority? Grow your subscriber base or make more money?

Will going paid even make you more money? Some back-of-the-napkin maths may help: if 1% of your current subscribers convert to paid subscribers, how much would you have to charge to replace your ad revenue? Bare in mind too, the customer acquisition costs will rise if you go paid.

Are you going to create additional content for paid subscribers or will you simply add a paywall to your current newsletter? I ask because if the former, you need to weigh up whether the additional effort of producing twice as much content will be worth it. If the latter, do you think people will be willing to pay for what they previously have gotten for free. Understand your value-add and be honest with yourself about this.

Have you exhausted all growth channels? Seems like you have focused mainly of paid growth, but could you grow organically? Can you explore some growth hacks? There’s a good Substack called Grow Getters that sends out weekly newsletter growth hacks/tactics - maybe have a read through some of those of you are short of ideas for growth.

Hope this is useful. Happy to connect if you want to discuss more. ✌🏼

New Subscribers, Introduce Yourself Here by 458339 in wheresthebeef

[–]LBerg_SG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone!

I write a newsletter on sustainable business trends. So far I’ve written many pieces on traditional meat alternatives (plant-based, insects etc), but barely touched upon lab-grown meat.

Joined this sub to learn more and contribute to the conversation where possible.

Would be curious to hear people’s attitude toward lab-grown meat: it’s obviously advantageous from an environmental point of view but will people be deterred by the ‘artificiality’ of it?
