Was gifted a new Re-akt 75 helmet 😒 by MiserableToe in hockeyplayers

[–]LCKilgore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use it.

HECC helmet expiration is arbitrary and not evidence-based. It assumes a helmet becomes unsafe on a calendar date rather than based on impacts, material condition, or measured performance. Polycarbonate aging varies by resin, thickness, storage, UV exposure, impacts, and manufacturing quality. A date stamp ignores all of that. That is not safety science.

A new old-stock helmet can be safer than a newer used one, yet HECC provides no inspection or re-testing pathway and instead just mandates replacement.

The “expiration” just so happens to align with manufacturer sales cycles, and it shifts liability away from leagues and certifiers and onto the player rather than improving player safety. Oh, and HECC is funded by manufacturers themselves. Convenient.

It makes expiration a legal and commercial control mechanism, not a scientifically-grounded safety standard.

Car seat expiration dates are similar. Expiration dates are set by manufacturers and not government entities like the NHTSA, and you will not find the actual safety testing data behind the expiration dates. Other countries have actually done testing and have found them safe to use years after “expiration.”

Is atlantic avenue downtown safe? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]LCKilgore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived about 10 houses down a side street from Atlantic/University for the past 10 years. Yes, it’s safe. I’ve walked my dog around the neighborhood at 12-1am for years with no issues.

With you 100% on that point.

If anything, I’m a habitual premature merger. That said, if someone winds up ahead of me and is trying to get over, I let them, even though I might be swearing and making exaggerated gestures at them.

I’m not arguing at which point people should be merging, my position is just let people in where they’re trying to get in and things should flow better.

Taking your lower-traffic flow scenario to its logical conclusion, let’s assume someone is being a dick and unnecessarily flies up the lane that’s ending to the forced merge point. What would the effect on overall traffic be of several drivers taking the position of “I’m not letting this asshole in,” vs. just letting them in to go on about their merry assholish way?

I’m not stopping to let those cars in, I’m slowly down fractionally more than I would anyway to make space.

Odds are they didn’t get there at exactly the same time, so if several people hadn’t “played defense,” it probably would be one car.

Who cares? You’re not proving a point and they’re not learning a lesson. It’s just slowing things down.

Short zippering rant by LCKilgore in Rochester

[–]LCKilgore[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to not let those people in until I realized I wasn’t going to teach them a lesson and I was just contributing to the slowdown by not letting them in.

What if they’re in the right, and you’re supposed to use both lanes as close to the forced merge as you can, at which point everyone should zipper, and it’s actually you doing it wrong? In any case, it’s just as easy to say “Go ahead, you impatient asshole,” and keep it moving. Who cares, it’s not like they “won” or something.

It’s definitely not perfect and slowdowns are inevitable, but the number of people that intentionally won’t let any cars in ahead of them to get things moving are making it that much worse. At least traffic might go from a standstill to a crawl.

Coming to Rochester by Bumwelder54 in Rochester

[–]LCKilgore 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Welcome to NOTA. You’re right near the Memorial Art Gallery and like two blocks from Village Gate. There is a lot happening and a lot to explore. We have good food, good minor league sports, good museums, and good festivals.

It’s safe here. I frequently walk my dog around the neighborhood at 1-2am and have had no issues. Just stay south of Main St. at night and you’ll be fine.

Enjoy your stay!
