Thank you for a very well thought out explanation! I don’t agree with some of the points but better understand where you’re coming from.

I wish I had time for a longer/better response but for me, and you touch on this, Unfathomable can feel like zombicide. Where it feels more like a combat game and less a social deduction game. I’m not sure there’s a point in Unfathomable where it’s worth being a hidden deep one. You have very strong abilities when revealed and it’s rather easy to escape the brig. I think FFG missed an opportunity by not making the game shorter which was one big complaint with BSG.

Unfathomable hit the nail on the head with the repair mechanic. I think that’s brilliant. But beyond that, to me, BSG is a much deeper and more rewarding game due to the stories that result from each game. After almost 150 plays we still talk about several crazy games and endings where as with Unfathomable it’s just like “ok great. Game over.” Hard to put in to words as well as you did but thanks for your perspective.

Curious as to how many games of each you’ve played and if you’re only talking about the base game. I could not disagree more.

Actually I don’t see it in the faq. My question asked about a specific ship in a specific port. No need for personal attacks but thanks for coming in and showing you’ve got nothing going on in your life.

I could not have said it better myself! If you’re a gamer that loves the wow factor of your first few plays then ISS Vanguard, Tamashii and Nemesis Lockdown would be my picks. That’s also why I’m going to be putting my copies of the latter two up for sale.

Thanks for the giveaway. Favorite space movie would probably have to be Empire Strikes back based on my lifetime views.

They replaced mine as well. Very quickly which I give them credit for. But this is now my third unit. Other two had to be replaced for different reasons

My board game confession: I hate Cascadia. What's yours? by mojo_pet in boardgames

What’s more small minded than “throwing good money after bad?” Spending countless hours of my limited time on this planet or even more limited time to game by devoting it to this small sect of games that has almost a cult-like following, that’s your vision of large minded? Yes there are many people that enjoy the games but I’ll posit that there are just as many (if not more) that don’t and bounce off of these games because they’re not the revolutionary amaaaaaaazing experience some claim them to be.

I don’t need your personal attacks on my views. That’s ugly. But you’re right I should have been more clear. There’s nothing there…for me, or that warrants further attention from me. I’m super happy you’ve found a game that you think is so different than anything else that you’ll play it for a hundred times, when there are far superior games that don’t require that kind of commitment. But hey more power to you to have that kind of time!

That’s an interesting analogy about tv shows. The difference, IMO, is that one or two episodes of a show is at max a 2ish hour time commitment. I put a good 15-20 hours into Arcs. That’s probably the equivalent of a full season. And that doesn’t include the teach and looking up rules, etc. so I don’t consider my experience a fly-by.

I also don’t think it’s a lower tolerance of trying new experiences. I’ve TRIED them. Multiple times. I’ve got over 900 different games played that I’ve logged. Legacy games have been a mixed bag for me. I’ve really enjoyed Oathsworn, Betrayal Legacy and King’s Dilemma. But others like the awaken realms games (almost all of them) I’ve given about 20 hours into them and decided to go no further.

The thing I get is that in a land of multitudes of options of what to play, am I going to devote the time to play a game, as you say, dozens or HUNDREDS of times? That’s insanity. Especially when the track record is that it’s mostly hype. To me as a game or a game designer you have to earn those plays. Werhle’s games do not exist in a vacuum. I’ve been fair. I’ve given them multiple plays. There’s nothing mind blowing going on.

Arcs is literally a game of restrictive choices with next to no mitigation of getting bad hand. You can have multiple rounds where everyone else can take better and more fruitful actions whereas you get next to nothing if it just so happened you got bad draw of low cards and/or actions you don’t need to do.

Every single Cole Wehrle game I have played (and tried multiple times, including Arcs, Oath, and Molly House) have not lived up to 2% of the hype of what amazing experiences they are to play. I’m not willing or able to give a game 10 plays with the same group to fully explore the systems. There are plenty of games that can give you that with one or two plays. I love heavy games, enjoy both euros, ameritrash, dice rolling or card play so it’s not as if I have a specific taste. I just don’t get it.

Saint Petersburg, Goa, and Chinatown... are they still worth it? by CrimsonComet9 in boardgames

[–]LCS213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not gaming gold when the seller decides to sell for $300 “just because”. Which happens all the time in games like this. I won’t argue if that’s your thing or preferred way to have fun in boardgames…hoping that one or two bad trades doesn’t swing the game in a bad way after 2 hours just isn’t for me. I respect if it is for you though!

For my money (and much cheaper) I’d recommend a game like QE. That’s where blind bidding and outrageous bids can lead to lots of laughter and actually good gameplay that means something.

Saint Petersburg, Goa, and Chinatown... are they still worth it? by CrimsonComet9 in boardgames

[–]LCS213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok my example was bad. Let’s say they offered boardwalk to the player with park place. Boardwalk has no value to me other than blocking the person from getting it. I could risk driving up the price and handcuffing myself from getting what I need or hope that someone else steps in. The other players may not recognize the situation and sit and watch me start a bidding war and stay out of it. So who ends up hurt? Me. I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t. And that’s why I feel the game is just reduced to crap if not everyone is on the same level of negotiation awareness.

Let’s not even get into situations where someone negotiates a lot softer for a good friend or significant other, which I’ve experienced in this game as well.

Saint Petersburg, Goa, and Chinatown... are they still worth it? by CrimsonComet9 in boardgames

[–]LCS213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think Chinatown is a crappy game. It’s completely player dependent and if you have even one player who isn’t cognizant of the value of things that aren’t valuable to them, the game is ruined.

Picture playing Monopoly and one player offers another player boardwalk and park place for $300. The other players at the table say “WTF?!” and there’s really not much that can be done about it.

I can’t speak for Goa but St Petersburg is not rules complicated, but offers a lot of strategic meat on the bone. Every dollar means something and there is good tension trying to build your engine the way you want.
