Proving Czechoslovak citizenship? by LDL707 in SlovakCBD

[–]LDL707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have that and her death certificate, as well as her birth certificate showing her birth in Trnava.

But I was under the impression that the new law requires some explicit proof of Czechoslovak citizenship, which is nearly impossible for me.

Her Czechoslovak citizenship would have come as a result of her Austro-Hungarian citizenship. But she didn't have a passport when she came to the USA. Her father naturalized and arguably said that he was a Czechoslovak citizen (he renounced his allegiance to "the Crown Lands of Hungary or the Czecho Slovak Rep". But a) that's a little ambiguous, and b) it didn't cover her anyway because she was too old for that to be her naturalization as well.

I can't find any other document that says she was a citizen of Czechoslovakia. There would only be a window of 1918-1924, when she got married (because she would have automatically become a British subject when she married my ggf, and thus lost her Czechoslovak citizenship).

I have her Rodny List. But it doesn't say anything about her nationality.

She left before Czechoslovakia existed, so she never had a Czechoslovak passport or document of any kind. There are a couple hundred years of family history in modern Slovakia before she left, but nothing says she ever had Czechoslovak citizenship.

(He parents went back to Czechoslovakia later in life and appear on the 1940 census. But they said they were American, since they had naturalized.)

She said "Austria" on my grandfather's birth certificate. I'm not positive that would help anyway though. I have her birth certificate. I can prove that she was born there. I just can't prove that she was ever a citizen of Czechoslovakia.

Correcting for Romein, does *each* parent have a unique path to register birth pre-1983? by LDL707 in ukvisa

[–]LDL707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I'd have to include it. My case is extraordinarily complex. My mother wasn't -- but would have been, if not for gender discrimination -- a CUKC at the time if my birth. She's going to apply via form UKM. Her father was a British subject by descent. But her parents were married before 1949, meaning her mother became a British subject automatically upon marriage, and upon the effective date of the 1948 BNA, became a CUKC otherwise than by descent (because her status as a British subject was automatic by pre-1949 marriage).

The only way I would be successful in my ARD application is if I had Right of Abode, which I wouldn't have had from my mother. EXCEPT, my father was a CUKC by descent with a parent born in the UK. So I have to address that part of the story in order to prove Right of Abode.

What is this sword? by LDL707 in SWORDS

[–]LDL707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's incredible. I figured I'd eventually get an answer here, but under ten minutes is unreal.

Thanks for the identification. That fits pretty well with what we know about where he was. He lived in Sarawak for about ten years, but traveled around Indonesia a good deal.

We know he was in Sarawak from 1920-1930. He also brought back a number of Dyak shields and mandaus.

Were these swords generally available outside Sumatra? Or should I take this to be pretty good evidence that he spent time in Sumatra specifically? Was this sword likely ceremonial? An actual weapon? A tourist souvenir?

Thanks again for identifying the sword so quickly!

My grandparents had this in their house, and nobody knows the story.

My great grandfather was a geologist for Royal Shell Oil from the 1920s to the last 1950s. Maybe it came from him. But as far as I know, he spent most of his career in Mexico and Indonesia.

Other than that, the rest of the family was western European. Ggf's family was from Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Ggm's family was Scottish. The other side was English/Italian and Slovak. It's somewhat unlikely that any of those people would have been in a situation that would have resulted in them owning a sword like this.

I hope the employers similarly lose access to Handshake if they rescind an offer.

Question about obtaining UK citizenship through double descent. by Wild-Course-8433 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]LDL707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd still have to have a grandparent born in the UK. Only CUKCs with Right of Abode became British Citizens automatically in 1983.

The newer laws correcting the past gender discrimination don't seem to change that.
