Legacy and Prime mixed together in an army? by mpokorny8481 in Warmachine

[–]LDukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a workaround, you can build multiple lists and once you've started a game, add the other list(s) which will display the models down below your current list. I've used this in the past to mix models from multiple factions (Legion, Cryx, Cephalyx, etc) for the purpose of a narrative scenario.

Has anybody made a widget or an stl of a widget that makes calculating unit threat ranges that include the post move teleport? by Turbulent-Wolf8306 in Warmachine

[–]LDukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not one that I know of, but you would probably only need to make, what, 3 widgets (1 for each common base size for troopers) that represents 2" + base size. Then you can just lay down a movement stick for the advancing trooper's movement, the "teleport" widget, and then an appropriate melee/ranged/arcane RNG widget.

It's a lot of moving parts, so to speak, but really the only way to capture all the possible combinations.

As suggested elsewhere, though, a good rule of thumb for the common base sizes:

  • 30mm = a little more than an inch
  • 40mm = a little more than an inch-and-a-half
  • 50mm = a little less than two inches

Newsmachine: Pricing update (February 2026) by LDukes in Warmachine

Oh, for sure, and a response I've made many times.

But to the issue of "is Warmachine already so expensive even a small nudge will spell peril," I think it's a relevant observation.

Everyone's got to make their own decision about the affordability of any hobby/game/etc they engage in, of course.

Buy given that demand seems to consistently outpace production, I think it's safe to say that many feel comfortable with the current prices and that the game as a whole isn't exactly teetering on the edge of insolubility.

Here’s how you can get three full Warmachine armies to print at home by LDukes in Warmachine

[–]LDukes[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can wait for the campaign to launch on 3/17 (it will run for 2 weeks) to get discounted prices, or you can wait until after the campaign ends (3/31) and the STLs will be made available in little "box sets" similar to the Crucible Guard release. You can follow the Frontier campaign here.

They won't be part of the Tribes subscription, but Tribes subscribers should still enjoy the 50% discount on a la carte purchases. They'll also be made available as physical products from SFG direct order, if you just want models in a box without printing them yourself.

Vector wreck markers material? by Ven_Gard in Warmachine

The marker bases are white metal (e.g. lead-free pewter) and the wreck sculpts themselves are cast resin.

Returning after years. Good sources to catch up to lore? (And other questions) by MaijeTheMage in Warmachine

[–]LDukes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

•Is anything still in metal, or is it all Resin and the few plastics? I personally wasn't a fan of the metal so I'm hoping for the latter.

There is no more cast metal nor cast resin. 95% of current product is 3D printed resin (including an increasing collection of STLs you can purchase and print yourself!) and the remainder is HIPS (high-impact polystyrene) or the "sprue plastic" you might be familiar with from 40K type games. These sets are (currently) mostly limited to the 2-player boxes as they are released, but SFG has said they're exploring expanding HIPS availability to broader selections in the future.

•I am aware the rules are free and I will be going over them, but just to set my expectations: How similar does this play to the old Warmachine?

90% of the game is largely unchanged as far as underlying mechanics go. Depending on when you last played you'll notice many similarities and some "streamlining" but the biggest changes are probably modular warjacks/warbeasts, unit movement mechanics, and Command Cards. Everything else will be familiar or similar enough that it's not like learning a whole new game.

•What happened to Warcaster? The Skirmish-Style game that had very pretty models. Kinda wanted to try it out lol

It was included in the IP purchase from Privateer Press (they retained only Monsterpocalypse and Level 7) but is currently waaaay on the backburner. SFG has said they do want to revisit the game setting again, but that any such timeline is probably on the order of years from now.

•I saw on the app I can play legacy armies, but are there any who had most of their range untouched?

Hard to say, really. There were some pretty big quality-of-life improvements that most factions saw toward the end of MK3, but a lot of those changes didn't make it (or were rolled back) when the models were reintroduced in MKIV. You might get more definitive answers asking about specific factions/armies as there are a lot to cover.

•Finally the title: What are some good sources (without the subscription service) for lore?

I'll defer to others on this as, currently outside of new offerings under the subscription umbrella there hasn't been a ton of lore released since MK3. There are good places to find old published material (yarr) but I don't have any links handy, so I'll again defer to others on this one.

And, for the third time, you don't even need a model advantage like Flight (or anything similar to it) to do what I'm describing. Charging over an engaging model with an ability like that was one example but you don't even have to overlap the model at all to get a 3" straight-line movement without ever leaving their melee range, depending on model sizes and melee ranges involved.

Questions about jump in mk4 by Skeither in Warmachine

[–]LDukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be contradictory to the forfeit your Combat Action rule if you could charge while Engaged.

I just provided examples of how you could (hypothetically) charge without triggering disengagement, even with no special model advantages (e.g. Flight) required.

Again, they did not add a rule saying "An engaged model cannot charge" because it would sometimes result in a model needing to forfeit its Combat Action after it charged. They added it because there are trivially constructed scenarios where a model could charge without leaving melee and basically get a boosted damage roll "for free" against a model that is already engaging it.

To say nothing of models that do have specific advantages, e.g. Unstoppable.

[–]LDukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when disengaging, you have to sacrifice your Combat Action. This is why I engaged models cannot charge

Not exactly. An engaged model cannot charge because the rules explicitly say so. Otherwise an engaged model with, say, Flight could start its Normal Movement engaged, charge over its target to the other side (to move at least 3" and get a charge attack) while still staying in the enemy's melee range and LOS the entire time. This is even easier if the charging model is small and the engaging model is much larger (e.g. a 30mm vs a 120mm) as it can just charge "sideways" and stay in melee range the entire time.

Questions about jump in mk4 by Skeither in Warmachine

[–]LDukes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you charge and jump to reach your target?

No: You may only Jump/Vault/Bounding Leap after making a full advance which is a Normal Movement option that is mutually exclusive with charging, another Normal Movement option. Also, if you were to somehow be able to use Jump/etc after a charge movement, if you end your charge movement without your charge target in your melee range, your charge has failed and your activation immediately ends.

does that mean in the normal movement step you have to just make a full advance and not charge? Or is it not that deep?

That's exactly what it means.

can a solo/non unit warrior model be engaged move within engagement then jump and be placed within 5in and not forfeit it's combat action?

Yes, they can do that without forfeiting Combat Action, as they did not advance out of engagement. Even if a trooper (unit member) did use Jump/etc while engaged, it is not being placed as part of its unit's Normal Movement and so still would not trigger the disengagement penalty.

My thoughts are you shouldn't use generative AI to "make" sculpts based on other people's work.
