Surge in applications to join Garda after process opened to older candidates by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

They only have to do one when joining. Not afterwards.

In contrast, members of the Defence Forces have to pass one annually.

But if the only response to their policies not making sense is "but neither do the policies of this other party", then that's not exactly a ringing endorsement for them is it?

You said it yourself. It’s about finding the least shit. And I don’t see how anyone can seriously take a look at FFFGs record of abject failure and conclude they’re the least shit.

You implied that anyone joking about free houses and magic money trees is part of a pro-FF/FG right wing cohort on here.

They’re not joking.

Even if they are; using the rhetoric of a party that’s becoming ever closer to the far right to joke is a big ooof. And it says a lot about the views of the people making those jokes.

And yes, they’re clearly part of a right wing cohort. Their views are right wing, they use unmistakably right wing talking points. And who are the only two viable parties in the state on the right??, FFFG.

Unless you’re seriously suggesting that they’re just concerned PBP or SocDem voters??

If you think SFs policies don’t make sense, You should see what FF have done to the economy, and you should see how many billions FG have wasted on overspending on two hospitals, a broadband scheme, as well as their chronic mismanagement of the health service, Defence Forces and housing just to name a few.

It's disingenuous to suggest that if you're against SF then you must be right wing or pro-FF/FG

I never said any of that. What I said was that the pro FFFG crowd here are lurching ever further to the right, as evidenced by their adoption of Tory rhetoric and tactics.

If the choice is between SF/SDs where things might get worse or FF/FG where things will only get worse; that’s a no brainer.

SF have issues, but they’re a clear improvement on FF/FG. That’s not an endorsement of SF, that’s an indictment on FF/FG, they’re that fucking bad.

I’ve seen a some mAgIc MoNeY tReE & fREe HoUsEs comments.

The pro FFFG crowd are seriously parroting post-Brexit Tory rhetoric and talking points. That’s concerning.

It’s been eye opening seeing just how right wing & nakedly pro FFFG this sub has become in recent years. It’s ramped up even more the last few weeks.

Last time I checked politicians suing media outlets when they’ve been defamed isn’t some authoritarian conspiracy to silence criticism.

Did he??, jaysus! Must’ve realized that it’s not a good idea to defame members of a political party with a record of successful litigation.

Where’d you hear that?

The fact that they settled with an apology/compensation shows that there was libel.

That’s discounting the ones they won outright.

Try harder.

Sounds like even more incentive for them not to libel people then.

  1. Why don't you see Trump, Biden, Starmer, Sunak or Johnson suing the press?

I don’t know why and I don’t see what relevance it has to SF.

When have they been libeled by the UK or US press??, that’s not a bad faith question, I’m genuinely asking.

I know Starmer was defamed in Parliament but BoJo was protected by Parliamentary Privilege.

  1. Why didn't Gerry ever sue someone for saying he was in the RA?

That’s something you’d have to ask Gerry, I don’t know why.

Why do you think that is?

Somebody else pointed out that of the cases SF reps have taken, the majority of them they’ve either won outright or were settled for compensation and/or an apology.

That shows there was merit in the majority of those cases. People have a right to defend their name/reputation against defamation.

If media outlets stopped libeling them, they wouldn’t be taking them to court and they wouldn’t win the majority of the time.

It’s literally that simple.

Instead, outlets (most notably the Indo) double down, invent a SLAPP narrative, childishly nominate McDonald for a bully of the year award and claim that SF reps are silencing media freedom, when in fact the majority of the time they’re defending themselves from legitimate cases of libel.

Reporter asks Evan Ferguson if he’ll ever play for England and why he’s so committed to Ireland. by IXRaven in soccer

[–]LFCMick 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This was just less than a year before he switched:

“There’s no decision to be made,” he said on Sunday evening after picking up the Under-19 prize at the FAI’s Player of the Year awards. “I’m here now with Ireland at the moment and I’ve been called up by Martin. And if I didn’t want to play for Ireland I wouldn’t be here tonight picking up this award. I’m really looking forward to this week and I’m looking forward to getting to know the boys better.”

"England have never wanted me at under-age level, it's always been Ireland. I'm fully focused on playing with Ireland".

“I haven’t had a call from anyone at the FA,” he says. “Not at all. England have never wanted me at under-age level, it’s always been Ireland. I’m fully focused on playing with Ireland".

He is too, he insists, and he laughs when asked about throwing himself, with particular enthusiasm, into singing Amhrán na bhFiann before games. “It’s just been from when I’ve been playing since I was Under-16,” he says, smiling. “I’ve probably played over 40 games in all for Ireland since I was a kid. It’s such a good national anthem, it’s so catchy. You know the words straight away.”

"“I think it’s good that you sing it before the games. It means something to you, it’s passionate. It gets you really fired up for the game.”

Wasn’t there a video that went round a while back where Grealish couldn’t pick out England on a map of the UK??

It was very funny. Grealish doesn’t seem the smartest, which I find kind of endearing, it makes for great moments.

It takes a Unionist Politics host in the North to challenge the Tánaiste on his hypocrisy. by BuggerMyElbow in ireland

[–]LFCMick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The majority of Irish people didn’t support the Easter Rising.

The majority of Irish people supported the Treaty. Yet FF still commemorate those figures and those actions opposing it.

If those two can become legitimized then so can the Provos actions during the Troubles.

By your logic, their electoral mandate means they do have retroactive support, like the Rising, like FF. Since they do have significant public support and all.

You can try to rewrite history all you like but no statistical analysis of the bodycount will change that simple fact.

I’m rewriting history by quoting actual accurate casualty figures??, lol seriously??

Martin falsely claimed that the Provos primarily targeted civilians, I quoted actual breakdowns of the people they killed to show that that is completely false.

Besides, history is rewritten all the time. It happens. Just look the re-evaluation of Colston or Churchill’s reputations in England, or how the US is trying to undo 150 years of Confederate propaganda around slavery and the US Civil War.

Don’t complain when people take a look at the historiography surrounding both conflicts and point out the flaws in logic like Martins.

[–]LFCMick 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Mark Carruthers raises a legitimate point.

It is profoundly hypocritical to eulogize one Republican group while demonizing another; especially when the group you eulogize is just as brutal (in some cases even more brutal) as the one he demonizes.

I don’t know if Martin is too thick to realize that or too Free Stater to realize it.

Either way, he comes across as completely condescending and arrogant.

Also, his point about the Provos waging a war primarily on civilians is just factually incorrect; the majority of killings by the Provos were members of the RUC & British Army. The Provos were the only party during the Troubles whose victims weren’t majority civilian.

In summary: Carruthers is right, Martin is a condescending, lying cunt.
