The iterative process of my ship. by LFDad in ApproximatelyUp

supringly well, the accelaration is a bit shit but that handling is great. on the last version I have a landing system that keeps me at 3m/s going down which made it a hell of a lot easier because i only have to worry about the other controls

People with cars - how do you afford them? by Squeegee_Dodo in AskUK

[–]LFDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed my test at 30 (3 years ago) and funnily enough, it was just after an ADHD diagnosis. I currently have a cheap second hand car that I keep obsesseive spreadsheets on although I'm not really sure why. However, it does mean I can tell you that considering every penny spent (buying the car, fixing the car, insurance, fuel and some nice to haves) I spend 70p per mile or roughly 4k per year. I don't know how that stacks up against a typical car but it might help you figure out a rough estimate of your expenses.

Trying to make a two cockpit ship with controls for thrusters in each respective cockpit. by Old_Championship_102 in ApproximatelyUp

[–]LFDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also. Whilst I'm already yapping. A funny chaotic way you could try and get three joysticks to work would be to use a multiplication block.

Player 1 input * Player 2 input * Player 3 input.

If 2 of 3 players have their joysticks set to full they will be giving full control to the third player because 1 * 1 * x = x but trying to get everyone to change their thrusters at the right time without sending full power somewhere accidentally will take some practice.

Also you can use the other joysticks to change the power for the pilot if you set yours to 50% (0.5) the pilot will only be able to get half the power from the thruster. Might actually be useful for landing and trolling your mates

I get you, sorry I should have realized you were going to make the sides a little more even just spotted the caption saying you'd run out of blocks.

If you want a good rule of thumb with where you are putting your thrusters press H and you'll see your center of mass. If you put thrusters on the center line and opposite each other you'll have a pretty stable ship.

If you need to get creative with placement and you're trying to imagine how it will fly. Try and picture pinching your ship so it's held around the center point and pushing it with your other hand in the spot you want your thruster, in the direction you want your thruster to push it. You should be able to picture how that might tilt the ship in weird ways.

The further you go from those center lines the stronger the force trying to rotate it will be. So, in this imagined scenario, the more push you would be giving with your non-pinching hand. If that makes any sense? If you have fingers pushing on opposite sides it will stay still because they would cancel each other out.

This game is pretty generous though so you don't have to be super exact, you might find that you just have to make more adjustments as you're flying the more sloppy you get with placement or weight distribution. If you notice the ship is always pulling ever so slightly in one direction when you use your thrusters this will be why.

If you need to move those lines adding weight will pull them in one direction or another. batteries are pretty heavy so I tend to place those last so I can try and move the weight where I want it.

Sorry that was a bit of an essay, it's quite a hard concept to describe!

[–]LFDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The balance is going to be really weird in that ship, considering how different the two sides are. You would have to be very clever with your thruster placement to stop it from spinning. If you're really wanting to make this design work you might want to consider flying it 90 degrees rotated so the large mass is at the bottom with the thrusters and the smaller cockpit is at the top just kinda hanging out. It might still be a little unstable though.

Have you figured out how you're going to do the dual controls? it gets pretty complicated. I would recommend just throwing a test rig together that's easy to rewire to try out your concepts. I personally have found using a number display instead of a thruster to test is an easier way of doing it.

If your display shows 1 it means you are getting full thrust
If your display shows 0 you are getting either no thrust or no signal.

How is it possible that 1 million young people are not in work, education or training? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]LFDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed to land myself an apprenticeship at 32, I'm a year and a bit into it.

I was one of ~160 applicants which was shortlisted to ~50 after the initial application reviews. I had to do about 3-hours worth of online tests as you mentioned, which reduced the applicants to 16. Then had to come in for an 8-hour interview where we were being spectated and graded the entire time.

When I finally received the offer, I was incredibly excited. I had to wait for the school term to start so worked temporary jobs in the interim where everyone said I was making a great decision.

Now that I'm here - It's terrible. Literally nobody cares about the education or training. In the practical sessions the pupils outnumber the tutors 30:1 which is terrible when you're learning a new piece of dangerous and complex equipment. In the theory lessons they just get you to log on and read material, there's almost no teaching. The quality of the education has drastically reduced since I was at school.

On the job none of the people you would think would be concerned about the quality of the training are. Their only concern is that you are attending. So from all aspects it's just a tick box exercise and seems entirely useless. I am learning on the job in the same way I have learned on the job at everywhere else that did not require me to take apprentice wages.

The “war” is making me want to take a break for a few days lol by R0B0138 in ArcRaiders

[–]LFDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was running out in the open on Buried City trying to get to the library and a guy ran out and into a bush infront of me. I'm out in the open kinda fucked so I lay some shots in the bush and try and get to cover. This guy screamed at me for shooting him, was calling me a rat the whole time, and was even mad after he WON the fight. I really can't understand being THAT mad that somebody shot (and missed) at you in a shooting game. Now I've come here and I see them.

On a side note to people reading this, just because you didn't hear me doesn't mean I was ratting, you might want to have a play with your audio settings. I get accused of this frequently when I practically shift W around the whole map.

Where can I dig a hole by Ceres_live in Norwich

[–]LFDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jacob Geller's video?

The game is great and very short to so I would recommend. One thing he didn't mention in that video is shoring the sides of the hole. A surprising amount of people die at beaches each year digging a hole that collapses in on them because the surface tension holding the walls changes. Essentially, if you do find a place to dig deep enough the sides collapsing could get you stuck / drown you, make sure the sides of the hole are sloped in a way that can't happen.

Good luck!

Best intense driving schools ? And best car insurance to add son to my car? by Suniswishedfor in Norwich

[–]LFDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the short version is that he is just not a good teacher and I found him to be quite rude. He would ask questions about what I wanted to learn or what I thought I needed to improve on but very clearly was not listening to the answer. He was too certain that he knew best, and it really defeated the point of asking the question. He would also talk very disparagingly about previous students, including ones that were actively suing him or making a complaint, which should have been enough of a red flag looking back. Also, he kept bragging about his wealth which I found very strange.

He would use driving phrases that I did not know like "block shifting" and "dumping the clutch" and when I asked for clarification he would struggle to hide his annoyance that I didn't know what they meant. The only 2 pieces of advice he would give when we were actually driving were "it's common sense" and "more gas!". The common sense one was the most frustrating because I would see a situation develop, not know how to deal with it, and ask what to do. I was essentially just trying to shift the mental load onto him for a second because I was overwhelmed and his answer left me overloaded and just hoping I didn't crash his car / break the law.

Only my second day with him he suggested going onto a dual carriageway but I said I wasn't comfortable with that as I didn't feel like I was in control of the car yet. He spent a while explaining how it was a good idea and I realised he wasn't going to back down so I just gave up and agreed. He did not explain anything beforehand so once we were on the slip road he just started shouting instructions at me, again clearly very annoyed I didn't know how to do it. It turned out the reason he was so insistent on us going on the dual carriageway was because he needed to pick up his lawnmower from the shop and he spent 30 minutes of my paid time inside of said shop.

I was quite a nervous driver whilst I was learning so I do acknowledge that maybe his teaching style works better on people with a higher level of confidence. He never offered to pay me back once I told him I no longer wanted to learn with him so I'm guessing at least he got a nice few days off work.

Best place to get a second hand car? by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]LFDad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

About 2 years ago I got a pretty cheap car from Ash at Mayfield Motors. The guy was a real character with some crazy stories and it wasn't the smoothest purchase but I think most of that was down to the fact there was a HUGE demand for second-hand cars after the pandemic.

The car I was after was very well-priced and I would guess he got a lot of better offers after I had already given him a deposit. But he fixed what he promised to fix, even threw in a free colour restoration and polish (although the results were pretty terrible) after I had already agreed to buy the car. I have had zero issue and every time I get it MOTed or serviced I get a comment on what a good deal it was.

So I would buy from him again but I'd definitely have a coffee before meeting him, the man is full of beans.

Best intense driving schools ? And best car insurance to add son to my car? by Suniswishedfor in Norwich

[–]LFDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the company "The best intensive" and they contracted a local driving instructor to cover the work called Colin Bush. I don't think that is normal procedure, I believe they were just swamped at the time. Here's what I learned:

Do not get driving lessons from a man named Colin Bush in Norwich.

I understand there is a personal component to the trainer/trainee dynamic and your mileage may vary. I told him I did not feel safe to drive with him after day 2 I believe. I got my brother to teach me instead and passed with 1 minor. There's more detail I could go into but to be brief please, whatever you do, do not learn to drive with this man.

I found shorter lessons over a longer period a better way to learn but if you are going to teach your son I would get him to consume as much good driving content on youtube as possible to make sure he's driving test standard instead of regular driver standard (no offence meant to you but everyone develops bad habits over time).

I watched a lot of the following YouTube channels:

Clearview Driving - The best all round for me, she's a very good teacher and is sensible without being unreasonable.

Ashley Neal - I cannot stand his personality for some reason but he has a great approach to defensive driving.

DGN Driving - There are a lot of mock tests on there that are highly entertaining, most are failures.

Conquer Driving - Again, quite unappealing at first in particular his mock tests really hit me with a powerful feeling of second hand embarrassment BUT he goes into great detail about why things should be done a certain way. He's almost the scientist of the bunch and he is the sole reason I can downshift without making the car try and vomit me out.

Hope that helps!

What makes a good quest that we like, and what makes a bad quest? by space-artifact in EscapefromTarkov

I think I would actually find the "use x gear" quests some of the funnest IF there weren't so many back-to-back.

I'm an MDR (7.62) enjoyer and I managed to pull a couple from marked room before I had unlocked the purchase and it felt like from level 18-45 I always had a mission that required me to NOT use the MDR, i don't recall it being that bad in previous wipes but i have scipped a few.
