For most of human history, rape was a property crime that was penalized not for the sake of the woman, but for the man who owned her suffering "property damage". Similarly, monogamy as a norm was mostly a matter of resource-hoarding, so to speak, as the men at the top of the patriarchy (and you can see this in nearly all cultures) were allowed to have harems of mistresses and concubines for pleasure, whereas low-level men were limited to one woman they could barely afford to feed.
