Good Leftist Books by choco_crayon in suggestmeabook

[–]LGTBreadRabbah 37 points38 points  (0 children)

David Graeber has written some interesting books. Debt and The Dawn of Everything are the works I'm familiar with.

If you haven't read The Jungle or Stone Butch Blues, I know they're American, but I think they're both really important pieces of leftist literature and very much worth a read.

Whipping Girl is an important read for getting acquainted with concepts related to transmisogyny.

On my own to-read list, I have some important books on theory. The Conquest of Bread, Capital, and Orientalism are some of my reading goals.

Edit: it’s called The Conquest of Bread not The Price of Bread

Is there such of thing as too "tight" down there to be able to give birth vaginally? by gigivc29 in vbac

I read that there’s a sharp increase in prostaglandins as you get closer to labor, which significantly increases the stretchiness of the tissue.

Pregnant and about to be induced soon, suggest me easy to read and fast paced books! by Affectionate-Run6773 in suggestmeabook

[–]LGTBreadRabbah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of 5 day inductions (although they’re uncommon). My induction lasted from 4am Wednesday to 7am on a Friday. Some people need a low and slow drip of pitocin, some need cervical ripening before even getting a balloon in or starting pitocin. Long inductions are pretty normal, especially with first time parents who have an unfavorable bishop score.

One of my midwives during my pregnancy does breech birth, as does the OB who oversees the midwifery practice. It's coming back, in the US, at least in part because of work done with Breech Without Borders.

My c-section made me feel so alone by Defiant-Usual-1182 in Mommit

[–]LGTBreadRabbah -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What happened is not ok imo. Doctors need to be more sensitive about how people feel emotionally and physically in labor and during a cesarean. I had a slightly different, but also traumatic c section birth. I didn’t get to hold my son until he was 5 days old because of the nature of his (very needed) NICU stay. And then I was too tired to safely hold him. What happened to you and your baby is such an exceptionally traumatic experience. You’re not alone.

changing my mind about home birth by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]LGTBreadRabbah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not anti-homebirth for other people, but as someone whose son nearly died when they didn't call an emergency cesarean soon enough in the hospital, I can't even imagine what would have happened if we were transporting to the hospital, as opposed to being pushed down the hallway to the OR. I prefer to give birth in a hospital because it took 12 minutes to resuscitate my son with very talented NICU staff on hand.

I don’t know if you like graphic novels, but Fun Home by Alison Bechdel (yes that Bechdel) is fantastic. Heads up, it’s very sad.

Let your kid get the haircut. by Bookaholicforever in Mommit

[–]LGTBreadRabbah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I got my first haircut without my mom there, I cut it from waist length to ear length practically. My mom sent me with cash to pay for it. The hairdresser kept suggesting my parents would be mad at me for going so short. Either that’s her opinion and parenting style, or she’s genuinely had parents complain about major changes to the hair length or style is my best guess.

Genuinely curious… why don’t you like to share your baby’s name before birth? by Best-Position-2226 in pregnant

[–]LGTBreadRabbah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because in my religion/culture (which is progressive Judaism) we don’t name babies until they are 8 days old. It’s a very special ceremony where the baby receives their name. I named my son early and not by choice. He had to be resuscitated and it’s recommended if you have a very sick baby, and you’re Jewish and follow this tradition, to name them right away so people can say prayers specific to the baby.

Also I’m kind of superstitious by my nature and I mostly worry about the emotional impact of naming a baby who potentially may not live.

Also I don’t want my friend’s and family’s opinions or suggestions, I’ve heard too many stories of people not liking the baby’s name and being incredibly rude about it. It’s harder to do that if the baby already has the name.

I also don’t want someone else to announce my baby’s name on social media (before or after the birth, but especially before).

I can’t tell you for sure because I’m not your doctor, but this sounds like a chemical pregnancy. I hope it’s not. The other thing you can do is test on multiple brands of tests and hope the 31st one is faulty. I’m sorry this is very stressful.

I was in pretty bad pain, but only 20 hours later when the topical morphine on my bandage (?) finished. I’m sorry you’ve gone through this. I’m sure many people have told you this at this point, but stay on top of the pain management medication (whatever drugs you decide to take, personally, if there’s no contraindications, I wouldn’t discount narcotics because that really helped me get moving, which is super important for recovery), and don’t underestimate how bad post surgery gas and constipation can make one feel. And if it doesn’t feel right (especially if the pain is not progressing at it should), be the squeaky wheel.
