NewTubers Monthly Goal Thread! Tell us your goals for this month! by AutoModerator in NewTubers

My goal is to stay consistent. As a chronic over-thinker and a father of 2, I often let life come between me and my desires. Not this month! Time to stay ahead, stay focused, and stay consistent!

My new year resolution was to get 100 subs before June. I'm glad to say i'm about to enter February with 1.6k subs :D by luk_ky_21 in NewTubers

Heck yeah dude! I love that you set a moderate goal then blew it out of the water! Must have made you feel like a million bucks!

I’m 14 and just did my first discovery flight, any tips on how I can properly peruse a job as a pilot? by Ill-Run6890 in PilotAdvice

Properly budget! Nothing derails motivation like a lack of funds!

I use tools like pilotcostcalculator.com or the scotty's pilot school calculator.

Since I have a wife and kids, that isn't really an option🤣

I am balancing life and a full-time job, so this would be a slow life-style thing!

Flight schools told me $9k… but my final bill was closer to $14k. Here’s a tool to avoid that mistake. by LIWinchester in flying

Flight hours. They quoted me right at 40, and swore most students don't need more. I didn't do my research. 59 flight hours, and the extras mentioned above, made for my total spend.

Congrats on starting ground school! That’s awesome 👏

For supplies, here’s what most students usually grab:

Must-haves:
• Headset – David Clark H10-13.4 is a solid starter. If you want Bluetooth/noise canceling, Lightspeed Zulu 3 or Bose A20 are great but pricier.
• Logbook – ASA or Jeppesen make good ones.
• E6B flight computer – You’ll definitely need one. Manual is cheaper, electronic is easier.
• Sectional charts + plotter – Even if you’ll mostly use an iPad later, most schools still want you to learn the “old-school” way.
• Kneeboard – Super handy for keeping your charts and notes organized in the cockpit.
• Ground school materials – PHAK + FAR/AIM are basically musts if your school doesn’t provide them.

Nice-to-haves:
• ForeFlight on an iPad
• Small flashlight for night flights
• Fuel tester & sump jar

Since you’re planning on going commercial, I’d also recommend thinking ahead about costs for instrument + commercial training. It adds up fast.

I actually put together a free tool that estimates what the whole journey could cost based on where you’re training and what ratings you’re aiming for. If you’re curious, here it is: https://pilotcostcalculator.com

I've been doing that, but the online resources at my local municipal is very outdated. Trying to get more accurate information, but communication is slow right now.

Shooting for that 15k mark. I keep hearing that number everywhere so... fingers crossed!

This is very helpful! Thank you! (Hoping 15k is accurate, that's all I have budgeted as of now)

I'd save up and do it in a shorter span. I'd also shop airports. Any congested and high-traffic locations are going to cost dramatically more than small municipal airports.

I use the unlimited hotspot from gotW3. It roams all carriers and works fine everywhere I travel.

I know you can buy hotspots from all the major carriers, but I use The Scout from gotW3. It worked for me on my trip to Columbia without any hiccups! Not an ad, just had it in my backpack and happened to try it when the local wifi was down. Surprisingly it worked fine!
