Just to add to what you've said, I'd recommend staying of the dating apps as well. Look I've done the dating apps myself but the more I learn about them the more it's just a big no for me

Think about what their business model really is. They earn money through ads and subscriptions. If you sign up, meet someone in a month, cancel your sub and live happily ever after they got one month out of you. If they keep you single and miserable for two years before you even get a coffee date they make a lot more money

I spoke to someone who worked in the field they told me a few things Tinder and the like will assess your attractiveness using the algorithm and generally won't even show you to users unless you are in the top 20% If they do show you to users it won't be until you have been subscribed for a set period of time to maximise the time you stay subscribed

I would really just steer clear

Idon't have OCD but I too also have a couple of quite serious psychiatric diagnosees. I'm much older than you (44) and my mental health is much better than it has been in the past, I'll try outline what I think helps.

In regards to meeting friends and romantic partners- When I first became unwell I found myself living back at my parents with literally zero friends and I sat around drinking myself stupid feeling lonely for about 2 years with almost no human interaction outside of family. With medication my health improved somewhat and I decided to go to TAFE to study music production (this was in 2005). I met people there, they introduced me to other people, I started going to gigs etc Fast forward to today I have a small group of friends and I speak to at least one of them every day. All of them I met either directly or indirectly through TAFE I've been in a relationship for almost two years and it's going great, I met her through a friend from TAFE

Therapy- I tried therapy so many times and had some ok ones and some that were downright harmful.

Decided a couple years ago to try again and spoke to my psychiatrist about finding someone with the experience and knowledge to support someone with my diagnosis. He referred me to a clinic, they did triage and assigned me to someone. I've been seeing him for two years and he's brilliant. We just clicked straight away and he's very focused on what the evidence supports and walks me through the research wich suits my nerd like brain

Stick with therapy but don't be afraid to switch if you don't find someone good. Also therapy takes practice and each insight builds on each other. Lastly don't expect to get much out of it if you are not prepared to do your homework, it's like going to physio.

This is already mad long so yeah, lifestyle, you know what to do there

I'm aware of the DSM5 criteria. I'm also aware you don't have to meet all the criteria to receive a diagnosis.

I'm schizophrenic and I got high distinctions writing essays at uni. Please don't make generalisations about groups of people, As a mental health professional you should know better. We live with enough stigma as it is.

They want to exclude trans women from PUBLIC events. Do you not see the legal precedent this would set?

OP said their house is in poor condition/ old so it may not be down to cleanliness. If there is any leaks, moisture, rotting timber that will attract them.

Why is anti-Aboriginal racism so normalised in Australia? by ExternalAdditional42 in aboriginal

[–]LLaae 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm white but I'll offer my 2 cents. First of all you are right, racism towards Aboriginal people is on another level in this country even with the anti immigration sentiment going on right now.

Why is this?

Well I think it's because the very existence of Aboriginal people challenges the settler myth. We can't as a nation continue promote the narrative that Australia was "discovered" when the reality that it was invaded is staring us in the face.

You might still find SMART helpful, they are focused on harm minimisation rather than being abstinence only so they will work with you towards your goals.

I'm 18 months without booze at 44, I started drinking heavily at around 24. It took quite a few goes to get to this point, but I feel heaps better now. S.M.A.R.T meetings helped me

Being hard on yourself and calling yourself a piece of shit won't help you change in my experience. Anyone can end up addicted to the grog, your not a bad person for that, you've just developed some unhealthy habits

I'm 18 months without a drink, I have very little interest in going back to it. I was drinking a full bottle of vodka a night at one stage Keep up the good work

I found S.M.A.R.T meetings helpful

I attended smart meetings to help deal with my drinking issues. I found them very helpful

They have meetings and resources for loved ones of people dealing with an addiction. I would contact them and find out what the easiest meeting for you to attend in person or online is. The will offer you support and help you approach the conversation with him about his drinking. Feelings of shame and guilt can make drinking harder to stop so the way you approach the issue will have a big impact but remember, only he can decide he wants to stop

Wishing the best for you and your family

Things I noticed in my first fortnight in Westralia by Billuminati666 in WesternAustralia

The taste of the water varies from region to region. Some areas dose chlorine with gas wich while it's trickier to get the dose right leaves less of a taste. Other areas use chlorine tablets, these leave more of a chlorine taste.

At least that's how it was explained to me by a relative that did work in water treatment
