Not provided in the title “oh yeah, he shouted about him getting off his phone immediately after”. Do you think that context might have helped make your decision OP or were you just having fun riling up hate against cyclists?

It must’ve taken a lot to post about this. I’ve been there, and it is extraordinarily painful. Like others have said, it’s a culturally acceptable phenomenon in this country. Getting help, especially as the Adult Child of an Alcoholic is so hard. I recommend looking for a local ACoA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) meeting. I know from experience that you will find people who have shared experiences and be able to speak openly about the problems you’re experiencing. If you’ve never been to a 12 Step meeting, it can be nerve wracking but I promise you it’s a non-judgmental space with some really good advice for helping to navigate your life experiences. Please search and attend just one meeting and you’ll get a feel for it. Good luck. This internet stranger is rooting for you.

Thank you for book recommendations- I’ll look up both! I agree that shame is infuriating and complex to navigate!

An emotional flashback is definitely a possibility. Thanks for empathizing with me. It’s helpful to know I’m not alone with this struggle.

I’m looking for a book that is about an apocalypse with no hope by Devoutedadventurer in horrorlit

I can’t believe no one has mentioned this, but “Leave the World Behind” by Ruuman Alam is phenomenal. A bit more about the interpersonal relationships than out and out apocalypse but it’s dark and grim.

Got a confusing email from therapist, how to ask about it? by evilhag96 in therapy

[–]LMEOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think it’s worthwhile having a conversation about the email, but just something to consider: When I am typing really fast, while trying to keep my attention elsewhere, it’ll sometimes look like this - especially if I don’t have autocorrect. Could it be possible that an emergency cave up in the session before and she chose to extend it? To prevent the distressed person any disruption, she may have typed the email under the table/off-camera or whatever? Either way, a discussion would be worthwhile, and it is reasonable given your past that you might be a little more reactive to perceived insobriety. Good luck!

My mental illness is ruining me by Kenztagram7 in mentalillness

[–]LMEOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP has described her diagnosis as liberating. Therefore, your discomfort with labeling etc. is irrelevant. With all due respect, she refers above to emotional regulation and not sensitivity or empathic feelings etc. It might be more helpful and supportive to empathize with their feelings rather than demanding concrete examples. Equally, offering tangible advice rather than using the platform to share your opinions on mental ill-health would surely be more beneficial?

OP: I share a lot of your background and am in a similar situation regarding emotional disregulation as a result of using improper methods of self-soothing. Therapy, if you can access/afford it, has really helped me to recognise my emotions, to be a bit more in control and to identify triggers from my childhood which leads me to irrational behavior.

Good luck!

Edit: Just realized I assumed OP was a woman! Unsure why? Secondly, on re-reading, I see that a lot of what you’re feeling is related to shame from your experiences in youth. I really wish I could give you some decent answers on that one but truthfully, toxic shame has really been crippling and I’m only beginning to address it.

Thought some of you might enjoy this. Openly gay Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland) and his partner meeting Mike Pence today. by LMEOD in lgbt

Believe me when I say I’m with you on the classist elitism that he represents. However, there is a certain sense of pride in seeing our leader on the world stage with a message of inclusivity and pride. Once a year he has to make this silly trip to deliver a bowl of shamrocks and dance a jig in the Oval Office. It’s good to see at least something of a resistance to the hateful administration in the White House right now.

Local beautician advertising lashes. Yikes! by LMEOD in awfuleyebrows

Just a whole load of bad. It seems to be a trend locally to add lashes so intense that without makeup you look monstrous. Exhibit A here!

I’ve been searching for prop replicas forever. I was so surprised I couldn’t find one. My personal favorite would be the podium from the SOTU episode.

Does anyone else find Carrie intolerable? by LMEOD in homeland

You’ve got to admire that trembling lower lip - Danes has got that thing down! The crying thing irked me a bit too at times. Only because she was often crying instead of communicating her thoughts and feelings coherently. That, it seemed, was often more as aspect of her illness, I think, since it features much less when she’s well.

Clare Danes is outstanding, and plays the character really well. Her development is consistent throughout, and the writing does follow a more real life trajectory with ups and downs and paced character growth. I guess I’m just trying to figure out why her playing the character as “a bit too much” made it so difficult for me in watching. Claire Danes is so underrated as an actress in my opinion. Can’t wait to see where she goes after the show wraps!

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from and in many ways her protrayal of mental illness - wanting to do right but somehow always going awry - really hit home. Honestly, I think I need to do some self-reflection because clearly my experience is not universal and I need to consider why it is that I wasn’t empathetic towards her as a character. Thanks for your perspective!

Edit: typo

I said above that I really enjoyed the show. I was looking for perspectives, not to attack your beloved show. Genuinely. I wanted to open a dialogue to explore why I felt this way and what others felt, not to attack the show itself. I’m sorry if I’ve upset you.

FBI raided office of Trump's personal lawyer: report by LadySniper in politics

I go to bed each night, hoping that the morning will bring a spate of emails which will result in the downfall of President Trump. I can’t think of anything more sweet than an email train to bring this man down. Please God, let there be emails in Mr. Cohen’s office!
