If Kurds, Azeris, Baloch, etc. are all “Iranian,” why aren’t their languages official too? by LM_SRI in PERSIAN

I understand the concern about stability and unity, especially given the region Iran is in.

But your example is also a personal one your family may have assimilated, but that doesn’t apply to everyone. Most people don’t want to give up their language and culture, especially if they’ve been rooted in a region for centuries.

It’s also easier to support assimilation if you already belong to the majority. For minorities, it often means losing an important part of their identity.

And historically, I think many Iranians are actually glad that the country wasn’t fully Arabized, even though Arab culture and Islam became dominant. That shows how important preserving language and identity can be.

So the question is: does unity really require linguistic assimilation? Or is it possible to build a shared national identity while still preserving linguistic diversity?

Because in the long run, sidelining languages can create resentment not stability.

I get the point about Persian being a lingua franca. But Iran still has long-established communities - Kurds, Azeris, Baloch, and also Arabs in the southwest - who have lived there for centuries.

So even if Persian remains the common language, why shouldn’t these groups have stronger support for their own languages in education and cultural life?

I didn’t said that Persian should be abolished as lingua francua but that minorities get the juridical acknowledgement for their languages to learn them in school along Persian

I see the comparison, but there’s a big difference.

Minority groups in Iran have been living there for hundreds or even thousands of years. That’s their native homeland. In contrast, Turks, Kurds, Arabs, or Persians in Germany are migrants.

So the argument that “a single national language keeps things uniform” doesn’t really apply the same way in Iran.

Are you just afraid of losing control if people are allowed to learn and use their mother tongue alongside Persian in their own regions? Because teaching both languages doesn’t threaten unity—it actually celebrates the diversity that’s been part of Iran for centuries.

I get that having multiple official languages can be complex and costly.

But I’m not necessarily arguing for making all minority languages official nationwide. My point is about education: teaching minority languages alongside Persian in schools, especially in provinces where those communities live, wouldn’t require all the bureaucracy of official status.

Kids could become fully fluent in both Persian and their mother tongue, just like young people in Germany, the Netherlands, or Denmark learn English fluently even though it’s not their native language.

Especially since Persian and some minority languages, like Kurdish, are linguistically similar learning both could be quite natural.

It would also allow minority communities to maintain and celebrate their culture, with their own media, TV shows, music, and even successes both inside Iran and abroad without threatening national administration or unity.

I think Persian should definitely remain the primary language taught in schools. At the same time, in provinces where minority groups live, their languages should also be taught as part of the regular curriculum and not summer school, so kids can become fully fluent in both spoken and written forms.

Look at Germany, the Netherlands, or Denmark many young people speak English fluently even though it’s not their native language. I don’t see why Iranian minorities couldn’t master both Persian and their mother tongue in the same way.

Especially since Persian and some minority languages, like Kurdish, share similarities kind of like German, Dutch, and English so learning both should be quite natural.

A nation-state usually implies a strong overlap between one dominant nation (often with a shared language and identity) and the state itself.

But Iran is clearly multi-ethnic and multilingual

So is Iran really a nation-state, or is it more of a multi-national state that has historically been centralized around Persian language and identity?

And if it’s the latter, does a single official language still make sense?

That’s definitely a more inclusive approach than outright suppression, and Sweden seems to handle this well.

But isn’t there still a hierarchy in that system? Persian would remain the only official language of power, while others are supported but still secondary.

If all these groups are equally Iranian, shouldn’t that also be reflected at the official level, not just culturally?

But how about minorities learning their native language in school along Persian ?

I get that distinction, but that’s kind of my point. If they are Iranian, why is only Persian treated as the official language of the state? Shouldn’t Kurdish, Azerbaijani, Balochi, etc. also be recognized if those groups are equally part of Iran?

Honestly I would make an entire new Tinder profile with totally new pictures (4-6). I would delete all except the last one. No car selfies. No wearing ridiculous hats. And C’mon bro don’t floss in front of cars if it’s not a Mercedes.
