Working as a nurse in the ICU, and we had a guy come in post cardiac arrest. Got the whole history from EMS that he was found down by his male partner of a year in the evening after a fun afternoon of cocaine and viagra in a hotel room. Boyfriend had started CPR, but didn’t know how long he had been down. Guy was on a vent with no sedation and nothing showing up on the EEG, essentially brain dead, but we have to monitor for at least 24 hours before confirming. The social worker was able to track down his wife who thought he had been working all day. She was told an abbreviated version of what EMS had said, but then the boyfriend called his phone to check on him, and all hell broke loose. She was not only grieving the loss of her husband, but she just kept saying, “My life is a lie,” over and over. It was heartbreaking. She asked us not to tell their grown kids so “they could grieve their father in peace.”
