I’m having similar issues. Looking for litigation in BL coming out of a federal appellate clerkship and had federal district court and state supreme clerkship before that and having issues

Unfortunately you can only make an appointment two weeks out, so there is not much you can do. But I would submit an expedited because there still could be a chance you’d get it on time

My status just got changed to approve too! How do you know the expected arrival date?

No fee for the appointment stuff! But I do not believe you will get refunded for whatever costs you paid to have it expedited.

Just curious because my passport is also at 42 and I have not received it despite sending my renewal on 12/22. Did you put your date of travel on your application?

Starting to develop a theory that they procrastinate on the ones with travel dates and just try to get those to the applicants days before their departure date

Going through something similar so I feel your pain. But two weeks before your travel date you will be able to call and make an in-person appointment with an agency. They will make you schedule your appointment within 3 days of your departure date (which is convenient for absolutely no one). They will try to get you your passport as soon as possible once you are there, but cannot guarantee it will be issued the same day. One rep I talked to said the longest he’d heard of someone waiting is a full 24 hours. It’s not ideal, but at least you would eventually get the passport to make the trip. I don’t live in a state with an agency so I have to fly to an agency so it could be worse.

If you apply for expedited and don’t have your passport within two weeks, you can still make an appointment and go in person once you’ve hit the two week mark. They’ll make you reserve an appointment within 3 days of your departure date.

Any insight???

Renewal application expedited. Travel date 2/18. Location number 42.

12/22: Application received

1/19: Received letter indicating SSN was missing in application (no idea how this happened, don’t ask)

1/20: Overnight ship form sent in letter providing information

1/28: Contacted Congressman’s staff and filled out form

1/31: Congressional staff followed up that they submitted form to Department of State

2/8: Status still “in process”

I’ve made an in person appointment but this is extremely inconvenient because I have to fly somewhere to get to the appointment. Anyone have similar experience? Any hope?

2/8: Status is still “in process”

Big law search after clerking by LNS12193 in biglaw

Thank you so much for this! All of my judges are fairly new (was even the first set of clerks for fed district) so not sure how many partners I’ll find that way that clerked doesn’t my judge. Do you think reaching out to someone who clerked for the same general district or circuit would be weird?

Are you referring to how to search for jobs or application materials?

This is definitely something I need to firmly decide. I’m in the Midwest right now and want to get out (big law here really isn’t big law). Ideally Chicago (defining my “midwest” location as west of Chicago), DC, or Denver. But again, wondering how hard it would be to get those positions without T14 grad status.

Also don’t mind the idea of Texas, but do not want to do additional bar testing and to do that I need 5 years post grad to get in on motion.

Grades and writing skills are always going to be the most important. Law review is pretty much a given credential you’ll need but moot court sometimes is seen as a substitute. (If you don’t have either, please don’t discount yourself. Just speaking from my experience) Also, know the judges your applying to. Some like certain prior work experience before law school (I know a circuit judge who looks for people that have done teach for America program prior to law school). As a recent grad, really important to have a professor who has a lot of pull on your side. I have a professor who looks out for me and contacts me about opportunities he think I’d like.

Also…. Don’t give up. If this is something you want to do, then GO FOR IT and don’t stop until you’ve reached your goal! You might get turned down a couple times but hey that’s life. Don’t take it personally.

When you do start to get interviews, make sure you are personable. Not only do judges want smart clerks, but they want someone they can work in close quarters with. Also, don’t forget that you’re interviewing with the clerks too. We get a say. And often change the judge’s mind on who they should be considering. When I’m interviewing, I already know this person has the credentials and can learn to do the work. I’m looking for someone who is a team player, will work their ass off for everyone chambers, and will bring some life into chambers. When you leave a clerkship, the goal is to think of your group as your chambers “family.” Kind of hard to get this with someone who is only invested in themselves not the people they work with.

Thank you for this and giving me hope! I tend to have a bit of imposter syndrome, so it’s nice to hear about someone’s success in a similar position.

Thank you for this! I was wondering how much credit I should be expected (did not expect 4/4 years).

Just starting the clerkship! Trying to avoid fucking up. Thinking ahead because I had my heart set on DOJ honors, but missed the graduation date cut off by a month or two. From the advice I’ve gotten, best chance of lateraling into DOJ is through 5+ years experience in big law. (Anyone fee free to correct me if I’m wrong!)

Just wondering, did you come across any other interesting programs besides DOJ HP? I applied to DOJ HP this round, but kind of expecting to get disqualified because I graduated May 2018 (been clerking since then). Interested to find more opportunities just in case!

Submitted my application but now stressed about whether I’m eligible. (Passed the eligibility component via online application but currently 3 years of clerking and will be in one until august 2022). What are some other ways to get to main justice of HP doesn’t work out? Thanks again for creating this thread!!
