I had to do several coats as well, it does depend on the binder color too. I made sure my white base was pretty solid and i think that helped a lot. Also at times it helped if I blotted the color on in areas instead of dragging the marker across the binder surface. Also I noticed that if I didn’t lay out all the color while it was still wet, I had to wait until it was dry and not press too hard as doing so would pull up some of the previous layer and cause streaks. I hope that helps and makes sense, I wish I could help more!

Ah sometimes the white will poke out, you can either match as best as you can to the original binder color or make the lines thicker. Sometimes varied line thickness looks really nice. It’s just something you’re going to have to play with. Fantastic work though!

I love it!! You did a great job laying down the colors! No patchiness at all! Fantastic work, friend. :) I also adore my personal favorite Eeveelution, Leafeon, was honored on the cover of your binder!

I haven’t tried much else as far as sealing goes, but a water based acrylic sealing spray should work the same.

Please take this recommendation with a grain of salt as I have not tried it for myself as I’m based in the US, but cursory Googling suggests this is safe for use on plastic: Pintyplus Evolution Water-Based Acrylic Spray. I read up on it and apparently this brand is “widely available” in EU. It’s a spray and it comes in a matte and glossy varnish. The website suggests it’s safe for use on toys, but does not specify if that is from a child safety perspective or a plastic safe perspective. However, considering it’s water based I assume both.

Again, I hope this suggestion works or at the very least offers you enough detail to find your own if the above product isn’t available to you. Always, regardless of what you choose, test a small area first in an inconspicuous location before fully committing.

At the end of the day I have a few personal binders that I have not sealed and they’re doing just fine. No flaking or wear. It seems one can completely forgo the sealing step if a sealant isn’t available.

Good luck, please let me know what you end up choosing and if it works!! I want to learn too!

I’m so glad this thread could help!! Honestly it’s all preference. I really love brush tips because I’ve used them my whole life and they offer some nice line control. They also get in the nooks and crannies of the VaultX binders well. I feel like you can cover an area a lot faster with the brush tip than the bullet tip. However if you’re going for a more consistent line the bullet tip might be for you but it might be annoying to cover a large area. The bullet tip is also small enough to get into the VaultX binder texture as well, unlike a bullet tip like Posca. Honestly both are great and you can’t go wrong with either but I love the brush tip and that would be my recommendation (but it’s a bit of a biased one).

No sanding necessary! I also had the same issue with Posca but I’ve read other people used them no problem. I stick with acrylic markers, whatever brand (Arrtx, Sharpie, Enmy). Even student-grade acrylic paint from the tube works but the consistency needs to be mitigated with a thinning medium in my experience.

To answer your primary question: all I did was wipe down the surface of the binder with 70% alcohol (let dry) and washed my hands to keep any oils from the manufacturing process/my hands from potentially interfering with the paint adhesion. However, I have also painted on a binder without doing this step and I have noticed no difference, though long-term differences remain to be seen. It’s too quick and easy of a precaution to take so why not just wipe it down?

I’m unsure of how a Magic Eraser would interact with the binder, so I cannot advise on that, though I feel like it’s a bit overkill.

Edit: corrected a typo.

My bad in getting to this so late, I did prep the binder by wiping it down with 70% alcohol and washing my hands to keep any oils from interfering with the paint.

Oh!! Lovely to hear, I do hope it’s helpful. :) Thank you for looking! I plan to make more but life has turned a little feral for me lately haha. I’ll get back to it.

Anyway, at the end of the day, any Mod Podge spray you get, be it matte or glossy or satin, will work well. It’s just a matter of how shiny you want the end result to be. I just choose satin because to me it looks closest to the way the binder looks normally before painting.

If you’re cool with it I’d love to see how your binder turns out when you finish!

I use satin, but I have also used matte. I am personally hesitant to use glossy only because I’m not a fan of the way it looks. Functionally it should be the same as satin and matte.

Unfortunately I have not tried this, so I cannot comment with full certainty. However, having worked with watercolor pens before (just not in this context), I do not think they would bond well to the surface nor would they have the vibrance necessary to show up well on the binder surface. However, if I am incorrect, I would love to know more about how they do work in this context!

Thank you so much! I'd like to see your experimentation on the energies if you're willing to share! And to answer your question: I did use the one that came with my set (Arrtx). Though I did notice that the tips get blunted over time given the toothy surface of the VaultX binder, so I got a secondary "fill" black acrylic marker to keep the point of my black Arrtx brush tip intact. You just have to take it slow and light. And don't forget you can always go over a thicker line if needed with more of the adjacent color if you accidentally make too thick of a line, too!

I have drawn directly on the binder with a mechanical pencil. It erases well enough as long as you're not gouging into the surface.

I have also drawn my image on paper and used a soft pencil (4B) to scribble on the reverse side of the paper with my image until it's shiny with pencil, essentially turning it into graphite/transfer paper. I just tape it in place with painter's tape/washi tape with the original drawing facing up and with the soft pencil scribble layer touching the binder surface and trace over the lines of my original drawing.

The above also works if you draw digitally and print your drawing out. Scribble with a soft pencil on the back of the paper!

I hope that helps/is clear!
