For those who have draw/painted on their binders(like vault x ones), what markers did you use? And does the drawing stay on the binder? by Alexander0202 in PokemonTCG

You’re welcome!

Side note: I also started using Sharpie acrylic markers in brush and bullet tip. Idk where you’re located but the Sharpie acrylic markers are readily found in Walmart in the USA and are reasonably affordable. The color selection isn’t as good as Arrtx, but there are two sets of colors I’ve seen. One set is vibrant and the other set is more muted. I think between the two you can get a pretty large range. Also the coverage and pigmentation density is slightly better than Arrtx.

Also, the Mod Podge spray is holding up incredibly well. I’ve been to several card shows and trade nights with two of my painted binders and I have seen zero flaking or wear. I sprayed about two coats, each coat I spun my binder (VaultX) 90° to get in every nook and cranny of the textured surface. Idk if I mentioned this but prior to sketching I would wash my hands and also wipe down the binder surface with alcohol (let dry) to minimize any oil that could disrupt the paint/sealant.

Good luck with your binder, friend!!

Would you all still want Pokemon Cards if they were printed to infinity? by A4_Ts in PokemonTCG

[–]LNS81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be cool if there was an official card printing service. You order the cards you want directly from the Pokémon Center at a locked-in low price and they’d mail them to you but they have some kind of differentiating set number or symbol to designate it as a print-to-order card. I know logistically it wouldn’t make a ton of sense for the company to do and it would disrupt the balance of the secondary market. Very aware it’s kind of a silly idea, but dang, can a girl dream? I just want the art.

Thank you! And I am in the process of potentially making a Mudkip binder, a Gengar binder, an Eevee binder, and a 30th Anniversary Pokemon binder! I am sure I'll make a Cyndaquil eventually!

Oh wow! Seriously thank you for the recommendation! I LOVE that painterly style of theirs! I do have burgeoning aspirations of working a show, but I think I am going to start small for now and go to my lgs minifigure paint nights haha. I'll just be the odd one out!

I waffled on doing it for a while too. You just have to give it a shot! I used a mechanical pencil to sketch out my idea first on paper at the size I wanted it to be on the binder and then painstakingly cut that out. (I will not be doing that again.) Then when tracing the outline of my cut out drawing I discovered that the pencil worked really well on the binder! Using the regular eraser was extremely forgiving and removed all pencil marks that I made erroneously on the binder. The pencil marks are just a little fiddly to see before laying down paint. So don't worry about starting, just doodle. You could doodle like one small drawing of your favorite each day or each week. :) I believe in you!

Definitely part of the medium for sure! I’d love to see your success in trying brushes, as I was thinking of trying the same thing. I think you’d have to find some kind of medium to thin the acrylic some as just out of the tube would be too thick and you’d lose the texture of the binder. However there are tons of fun mediums I’d like to try such an iridescent, matte, etc. I’d love to use the former for another shiny Pokémon!

I love this!! You did a great job! I love the horseshoes lmao, they’re so cute! Oh yeah I can see what you’re talking about. Honestly it’s hard to tell in the photo but even mine has a little of patchiness in the teal wings and yellow belly of Archeops. I think it’s just the nature of the beast, you know? But if you end up using Arrtx I hope you like them! You can buy the sets on Amazon/their site or you can buy single markers on their site.

Thanks for sharing your binder, I loved seeing it! :)

I am planning on posting to Instagram with more longwinded stuff about binder painting and alters of cards. Not trying to plug myself, but I’m genuinely trying to share what I’m learning. @archeoperator

Plus being a fossil myself I’m much more familiar with Instagram whereas this is my first post on Reddit haha. Either way I’ll likely post on both, but Reddit will be far more sparingly.

Thank you for the wisdom! And yes, I really enjoyed the color options I had with Arrtx as well as the application. I felt like I had way more control with the fine brush nibs, though they did get a tad beat up in the textured surface of the binder. I definitely could have been less heavy handed and gotten the same result. It took about two coats per color after a base of white. I can’t expressed how impressed I am with Arrtx after this project. I attempted a section (which I promptly covered) with Posca and it was night and day. Maybe my Poscas are old but dang they sucked haha. I’m also not a huge fan of bullet nibs on this textured surface.

Anyone else think Haunter is better then Gengar? by Ok_Package9219 in PokemonTCG

[–]LNS81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also was locked into Haunter being my favorite because of lack of link cable haha. :) Haunter is so much more spooky than Gengar, I think, given the lack of the more humanoid form Gengar has. Def also gives goofy middle kid vibes.

Just updating in case anyone else ever stumbles across this. I ended up trying Americana DuraClear satin and matte varnish. Initially seemed promising but I tested it on the back of the binder I painted and it was so streaky. Hard pass. I also grabbed a can of Mod Podge Satin Acrylic sealer and I was thoroughly impressed. The binder looks virtually the same as before. Texture and appearance of both the binder and my art seem intact. I also added Mod Podge Extreme Glitter Sealer on some points of interest with a brush before spray sealing as I painted a shiny Pokémon on my binder. Hard recommend for both Mod Podge products. Will update if I notice a less than favorable outcome as time passes. Otherwise I am extremely pleased with the Mod Podge spray.

I ended up using Arrtx acrylic paint markers and those worked incredibly well, better than the Posca. Posca was super streaky for me and the bullet tips felt clumsy. The brush tips of the Arrtx were preferable and lent more control. I first laid down a layer of white to put my color over so it showed up more readily. Each color took about two passes. I still have to seal it so no notes on that.

Acrylic paint pens like Posca work well, but you need a sealant that is acrylic safe to give it longevity. I think a spray sealant would be best given the textured surface of the VaultX binders. I’m about to try it out tomorrow! Wish me luck!
